Review the chromium, nickel, molybdenum and low-carbon limits for your specified bar grade.
| Element | 316L / S31603 |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.00–18.00% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 10.00–14.00% |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.00–3.00% |
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.030% |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤2.00% |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤1.00% |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤0.045% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤0.030% |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤0.10% |
316L contains 2–3% molybdenum, supporting stronger resistance to localized pitting and crevice attack in many chloride-bearing conditions compared with 304. Its low carbon level is valuable for welded assemblies where intergranular corrosion risk is part of material selection.
Include the actual chemical analysis and service environment in your material review. Final alloy suitability follows the project design, finishing method and operating conditions.
Reference composition for ASTM A276/A276M UNS S31603 stainless steel bars. Grade 1.4404 follows the separate EN material chemistry and acceptance limits when specified.
Mechanical performance depends on delivery condition, cold work and the agreed ASTM or EN product specification.
| Property | Solution-Annealed Reference |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | ≥485 MPa |
| 0.2% proof / yield strength | ≥170 MPa |
| Elongation (50 mm gauge) | ≥40% |
| Brinell hardness (reference) | ≤217 HB |
| Cold-finished bar | Performance and tolerances specified by condition and order |
For your machining or welding project, identify the delivery condition, diameter and test acceptance requirements before production or supply is confirmed.
Use your corrosion exposure, material standard and fabrication method to select the grade for your order.
2–3% molybdenum and ≤0.03% carbon help serve corrosion-sensitive and welded fabrication needs.
Widely specified for fabricated components and machinery in general corrosion-resistant service.
Choose grades against the specified ASTM or EN standard and actual operating conditions. The two grades have different chemistry requirements.
