REINFORCING STEEL PROCUREMENT

ASTM Rebar for Concrete Reinforcement

Start with the applicable standard and grade, then confirm nominal bar number, test requirements, delivery format and project-approved detailing.

ASTM steel rebar refers to reinforcing steel ordered to a defined ASTM specification. The two principal specifications covered here are ASTM A615 for carbon-steel reinforcing bars and ASTM A706 for low-alloy bars with additional controls related to mechanical performance and weldability.

Purchase orders should name the exact standard edition, grade, bar size, cut or coiled form, expected quantity and applicable mill test reports. For seismic detailing, welding or mechanical splices, follow the structural engineer's approved design and governing code.

HISTORICAL DESIGNATION / EDITION REVIEW

ASTM A615 Grade 75 Rebar

Legacy Grade 75 [520] was removed from A615's main concrete-reinforcement grades in 2018. The annex treatment concerns other applications; original drawings, edition and intended use need review.

  • Historic yield level: 75 ksi [520 MPa]
  • Current main-scope status: excluded
  • Substitution: designer approval required

LOW-ALLOY / WELDABILITY CONTROLS

ASTM A706 Grade 60 Rebar

Grade 60 [420] low-alloy reinforcement with controlled chemical composition and tensile-property requirements relevant to applications involving welding or tighter mechanical controls.

  • Standard: ASTM A706/A706M
  • Yield level: Grade 60 [420]
  • Specify: MTC, carbon equivalent, weld plan
Grade 75 is a legacy/special-application enquiry

Current ASTM A615/A615M-26 scope lists Grades 40, 60, 80 and 100 for its main concrete-reinforcement requirements. Grade 75 is addressed separately for other applications under Annex A2. Do not substitute grades or represent Annex A2 material as approved structural reinforcement without the design authority's acceptance.

ASTM SPECIFICATION SELECTION

ASTM A615 vs ASTM A706

Both cover reinforcing bar, but the standards address chemistry and tensile-property control differently. The correct choice depends on the project specification and design intent.

ASTM A615/A615M-26

Carbon-Steel Reinforcing Bars

  • Main grade levels: 40 [280], 60 [420], 80 [550] and 100 [690].
  • Use: structural reinforcement as permitted by construction documents and the governing building code.
  • Controls: tensile tests, bending, geometry, markings and chemistry under the contracted edition.
  • Welding: the ASTM designation alone does not ensure enhanced weldability; evaluate chemistry and qualified welding procedure.
ASTM A706/A706M-26a

Low-Alloy Reinforcing Bars

  • Grade levels: 60 [420], 80 [550] and 100 [690].
  • Use: applications requiring controlled tensile properties and/or enhanced weldability.
  • Controls: limits on chemistry, carbon equivalent and relevant mechanical-property parameters.
  • Welding: material selection does not replace applicable AWS D1.4/D1.4M welding procedure requirements.
Dual certification or welding requirements?

Include the exact contract editions and required mill certification. A706 compatibility with A615 should be verified by grade, size, marking, MTC and project acceptance.

GRADE COMPARISON

ASTM Steel Rebar Grade Comparison

A grade number is a minimum specified yield level—not a complete description of chemistry, weldability, ductility, form or project acceptance.

Product PageMinimum Yield DesignationKey Procurement DifferenceSpecification Status
A615 Grade 6060 ksi [420 MPa]Carbon-steel reinforcement; welding review is project-specific.Included in the current A615 main scope.
A615 Grade 7575 ksi [520 MPa] — historical levelLegacy drawings or defined other-application enquiries; edition and design approval essential.Removed from main concrete-rebar scope in 2018; Annex A2 covers other applications.
A706 Grade 6060 ksi [420 MPa]Low-alloy chemistry and controlled tensile provisions intended to support weldability or controlled-performance use.Included in current A706 main scope.
These values identify grade levels only. Final tensile, bend, elongation, chemistry and other acceptance requirements depend on the applicable ASTM edition, bar size and documentation.
LEGACY GRADE CLARIFICATION

What Happened to ASTM A615 Grade 75?

The question matters when older concrete drawings or bills of material continue to use the 75 ksi designation.

2018 standards transition

In ASTM A615/A615M-18ε1, Grade 75 [520] was moved out of the principal concrete-reinforcement grade listing. Annex A2 introduced provisions for Grade 75 in certain non-concrete-reinforcement applications. In 2026, the A615 main scope continues to recognize Grades 40, 60, 80 and 100.

For legacy drawings

Obtain the original ASTM edition and drawings. Any proposed Grade 80 substitute or change in use must be reviewed and accepted by the engineer of record or relevant design authority.

Purchasing checklist for a Grade 75 enquiry

  • 01Original edition: obtain the full ASTM designation and year from the contract.
  • 02Intended application: confirm whether the material is for a legacy concrete design or an Annex A2 other application.
  • 03Engineer approval: confirm whether an alternate grade is authorized.
  • 04Test records: define the grade-specific certification and acceptance conditions.

BAR TAKEOFF / TONNAGE

ASTM Steel Rebar Weight Calculator

Calculate an estimated metric tonnage using nominal mass per metre for your chosen ASTM rebar number, length and quantity.

Estimate Rebar Weight

1.862 MTEstimated total weight
18.624 kgEstimated weight per bar
100 pcsTotal number of bars

Planning values only; mill/receiving weights and actual shipment quantity are governed by the contracted measurement method.

Calculation Basis

For one line item, multiply the bar size's nominal mass (kg/m) by each bar's length (m) and the number of pieces. Divide total kilograms by 1,000 to obtain metric tons.

  • 01Select the correct ASTM # bar from your drawing or bar-bending schedule.
  • 02Enter the actual ordered cut length per piece, in metres.
  • 03Enter the quantity of pieces for that size and length.
  • 04Repeat for each line item and add totals externally for a mixed-size order.
Example: #5, 12 m, 100 pcs

1.552 kg/m × 12 m × 100 = 1,862.4 kg ≈ 1.862 MT. This estimate excludes scrap allowances, bend allowances and shipment packing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ASTM Steel Rebar Procurement FAQs

Answers to common purchasing questions on standards, grades, rebar size, weldability, certification and planned tonnage.

What ASTM standards cover this rebar selection?
This ASTM Steel Rebar page introduces ASTM A615/A615M for carbon-steel reinforcing bars and ASTM A706/A706M for low-alloy bars with additional chemical and controlled tensile-property provisions. Always specify the applicable standard edition in the purchasing contract.
What is the difference between ASTM A615 Grade 60 and ASTM A706 Grade 60?
Both use a 60 ksi [420 MPa] minimum yield designation, but A706 includes additional chemistry, carbon-equivalent and tensile-property controls intended to improve weldability or meet controlled-strength requirements. The structural design and welding procedure determine which is suitable.
Is ASTM A615 Grade 75 a current grade for ordinary concrete reinforcement?
No. ASTM A615/A615M removed Grade 75 from its main concrete-reinforcement grade list in 2018. Later editions retain Grade 75 for certain other applications under Annex A2. For older drawings, consult the engineer and the contract standard edition before ordering or substituting material.
Which ASTM rebar sizes are listed?
The nominal reference chart covers US bar numbers #3 through #18 and corresponding SI size labels. Availability and application of each size should be checked by grade, standard edition, design code and purchase order.
How is ASTM steel rebar weight calculated?
Select a nominal ASTM bar number, multiply its reference kg/m by the cut length in metres and the number of pieces, then divide by 1,000 for metric tons. Raised ribs do not change the appropriate nominal-table method for early estimating.
Does ASTM A706 mean welding can proceed without qualification?
No. Although A706 limits relevant chemistry and tensile properties to enhance weldability, the welding procedure, filler, temperature controls and qualification must still follow the project requirements and applicable AWS D1.4/D1.4M.
Can you supply a mill test certificate?
Specify the required certificate and tests in your RFQ. The mill test report, heat traceability and available inspection documents are confirmed for the quoted product and manufacturing lot.
Can A615 Grade 80 replace an old Grade 75 specification?
An engineering change may be feasible for some projects, but it is not an automatic substitution. The structural engineer or authorized design reviewer must approve the grade, detailing, splice requirements and governing code acceptance.
What information is needed for a bulk rebar quotation?
Send the ASTM designation and edition, grade, rebar number, length and quantity by size, expected tonnage, inspection documentation, shipping port and delivery terms.
Are all grades and sizes shown in stock?
No. The published production and inventory figures describe the company overall. The availability, minimum order requirements and delivery date for a particular ASTM grade and bar size must be verified by the sales team.
