PROCUREMENT FAQAustralian Steel Rebar Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions on 500N/500E grade selection, size designation, nominal mass and mill documentation.
What standard covers Australian reinforcing steel bars?
AS/NZS 4671:2019 is the Australian/New Zealand product standard for reinforcing steel in concrete. It covers bar, coil and other specified forms; this page focuses on ribbed reinforcing bars.
What is the difference between 500N and 500E rebar?
500N is normal-ductility Class N with characteristic Rm/Re at least 1.08 and Agt at least 5%. 500E is earthquake-ductility Class E with ratio 1.15 to 1.40 and Agt at least 10%.
Is 500E the typical Australian N-bar grade?
No. D500N is widely used in Australian reinforcing bar schedules. D500E is associated with New Zealand seismic-class specifications and should be supplied only where the engineering documents call for it.
Why does the Australian size list contain N24 and N28 instead of Ø25?
AS/NZS 4671:2019 gives an Australia-only nominal mass table using 24 and 28 mm references, while its New Zealand-only table includes 25 mm. Select the national bar series specified for the project.
What does N20 weigh per metre?
The Australia-only AS/NZS 4671:2019 nominal reference mass for 20 mm N-series reinforcement is 2.47 kg/m. A 12 m bar is therefore estimated at 29.64 kg.
How much does D500E25 weigh?
The New Zealand-only AS/NZS 4671:2019 nominal reference mass for a 25 mm reinforcing bar is 3.85 kg/m. A 12 m bar is estimated at 46.2 kg.
Does 500E have higher yield strength than 500N?
Both have a 500 MPa characteristic lower yield-strength requirement. Their upper characteristic yield limits and ductility requirements differ, so they are not interchangeable by strength label alone.
Can AS/NZS 4671 rebar be welded?
The standard defines chemical and weldability-related requirements. Actual welding must meet relevant engineering approvals and applicable procedures such as AS/NZS 1554.3.
Can you guarantee ACRS accreditation for all orders?
Accreditation cannot be assumed. The applicable producer, mill location, grade, size and product form need to be checked against current verifiable certificates for the actual supply.
Can I order 500E in 32 mm or 40 mm diameters?
These are nominal size references and can be encountered in supplier ranges, but actual 500E grade declarations and producer compliance must be verified before quotation or order acceptance.
What documents are needed for a rebar shipment?
Common requests include heat-linked MTC, cast and product chemistry, tensile/elongation data, nominal size verification, batch identifiers and any independently verified project certificates.
What information should be included in an RFQ?
Provide AS/NZS 4671 edition, specified 500N or 500E grade, diameter series, length and quantity schedule, inspection and certification conditions, destination, Incoterms and desired shipping date.
