PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Welded Steel Mesh for Reinforced Concrete

Define the exact mesh configuration rather than ordering on a generic “steel mesh” description.

What is Welded Reinforcement Mesh?

Welded reinforcement mesh is a grid of intersecting steel wires or reinforcing bars joined by resistance welds at designed intervals. It is supplied as mesh sheets, and certain smaller-wire products may be offered in rolls where the specified standard permits.

The combination of wire profile, diameter, pitch, sheet size and weld-joint quality determines the product purchased. Structural performance and placement must follow the approved concrete design.

What to Specify First

  • Material standard and wire or bar strength grade.
  • Longitudinal and transverse diameter or nominal wire area.
  • Pitch in each direction, measured centre-to-centre.
  • Sheet length, width, edge projection and quantity.
  • Required weld shear/tensile evidence, mill certificates and traceability.
Have a reinforcement mesh schedule?

Attach the approved drawings, wire schedule and quantities; we will check the proposed supply configuration.

PRODUCT FORMATS

Flat Sheets, Ribbed Wire and Purpose-Made Grids

Select the arrangement required by the approved reinforcement drawings.

Ribbed-Wire Mesh

Deformed reinforcement can be specified where bond and performance requirements call for it. Wire geometry and weld tests follow the selected material standard.

Fabricated rectangular-grid steel reinforcement mesh with visibly different longitudinal and cross spacing

Purpose-Made Mesh

Different spacings, wire sizes and edge overhangs can be evaluated from project drawings. Custom manufacturing feasibility depends on equipment and order volume.

Square grid or unequal pitch?

Specify both wire directions independently. “150 × 200” must identify which pitch runs across the sheet and which runs along it.

MESH DETAIL

Plain Wire, Deformed Wire and Welded Crossings

The wire surface and weld configuration must match the specified bond, ductility and test criteria.

Plain wire

Smooth round wire can form welded reinforcement where permitted by the project specification and product standard.

Deformed / ribbed wire

Surface deformations support concrete bond. Use the nominal cross-sectional area and grade defined by the specified standard.

Two-way spacing

State the longitudinal and transverse pitch separately, including direction on the fabrication drawing.

Cross weld integrity

Specify applicable weld shear, tensile and inspection requirements with lot traceability.

“Welded” describes the manufacturing process; site welding, mechanical connection, lap/anchorage details and structural suitability still require project approval.

WELDS / INSPECTION

Cross-Weld Strength, Dimensional Checks and Traceability

Joint verification is central to a reinforcement mesh order. Weld shear and other tests must follow the selected market standard.

Steel factory inspector examining resistance welded joints and measuring spacing on reinforcement mesh

Weld-joint strength

Apply the required joint shear or weld test procedure and sampling plan for the specified product.

Wire properties

Review required yield/tensile values and ductility criteria for the actual grade and wire profile.

Geometry & pitch

Inspect wire diameter / nominal area, centre spacing, sheet dimensions and edge projections.

Traceable records

Identify production batch or heat and inspection findings against the delivery documentation.

Tolerance bands, number of permissible broken welds and test acceptance limits are standard-specific. They are not interchangeable between the national systems listed above.
MESH LAYOUT

Square vs Rectangular Openings and Edge Projections

Consistent design intent depends on both grid directions and the correct geometry at sheet edges.

Equal-Pitch Mesh

For example, Ø6 wire at 150 × 150 mm pitch creates a symmetric grid. It is a geometric illustration; supply and engineering suitability are checked against the contract.

  • Specify two nominal wire directions even if both are identical.
  • Include total sheet length and width in the approved layout.
  • Confirm perimeter overhang and permitted cut edges.

Rectangular-Pitch Mesh

Different spacing or wire size can be used in each direction where approved. Drawings should identify main reinforcement direction, transverse wire location and sheet orientation.

  • Specify longitudinal pitch, transverse pitch and nominal wire area.
  • Include laps, support and cover requirements from the engineer.
  • Confirm safe loading and stacking of large fabricated sheets.

ESTIMATED WEIGHT

Welded Reinforcement Mesh Weight Calculator

Calculate an approximate kg/m², sheet mass and total tonnage from longitudinal and transverse wire geometries.

Two-Direction Mesh Weight Calculator

Enter two wire diameters and pitches, finished sheet dimensions and the sheet quantity. This gives a theoretical steel mass estimate, excluding exact edge-wire counting and weld allowance.

3.196 MTEstimated theoretical total weight
2.219 kg/m²Nominal weight per m²
31.959 kgEstimated weight per sheet
14.400 m²Area per sheet
100 sheetsOrdered sheet count

Formula: nominal kg/m per direction = 0.006165 × d². Approx. kg/m² = 0.006165 × [d₁² × (1000/p₁) + d₂² × (1000/p₂)]. Crossings, edges and actual wire counts are not modeled.

Weight Estimation Example

For equal Ø6 mm wires spaced 200 × 200 mm in a 2.4 × 6.0 m sheet, the calculated theoretical mass is approximately 2.219 kg/m² or 31.959 kg per sheet. One hundred such sheets give about 3.196 metric tons before packaging.

Why actual mass differs: Real sheets contain whole-number wires, may have edge projections and different end-wire arrangements, and may use nominal areas stated by the applicable specification. The approved mesh schedule or supplier mass declaration governs the purchase.

PURCHASING FAQ

Welded Reinforcement Mesh FAQs

Clear responses to mesh sizing, standards, welded joint testing and procurement.

What is welded reinforcement mesh?

It is a sheet or, for certain approved configurations, a roll of steel wires or bars arranged at defined pitches and welded where they cross for use as concrete reinforcement.

What is the difference between welded mesh and loose steel rebar?

Mesh is factory-welded into a predefined grid. Loose bars are individually placed and tied or joined to approved detailing. The engineer specifies which format is appropriate.

What ASTM standard covers welded wire reinforcement?

ASTM A1064/A1064M-24 covers plain and deformed carbon-steel wire and welded wire reinforcement for concrete; the purchase order should define the applicable product details.

What is the current British specification for welded reinforcement fabric?

BS 4483:2025 is the current British mesh specification and replaces BS 4483:2005. Confirm legacy-project edition requirements with the engineer.

Is GB/T 1499.3-2022 current?

Yes. GB/T 1499.3-2022 is the Chinese standard for steel welded fabric for concrete reinforcement, implemented in May 2023.

Can you supply 100 × 100 or 200 × 200 mm pitch?

Those are useful example grid dimensions for a quotation. Confirm the actual wire sizes, grade, panel dimensions, line capability and availability for the requested schedule.

Are all welded mesh panels suitable for load-bearing slabs?

Structural application depends on the selected grade, mesh steel area, concrete design, support, placement, laps and cover. Use only the reinforcement approved by the project engineer.

How is theoretical welded mesh weight calculated?

For a preliminary estimate, add the nominal kg/m contributed by each perpendicular set of wires per square metre, then multiply by the sheet area and sheet count. Edge wires, projections and nominal mass tolerances change the actual result.

Which mesh size should I order?

The design drawing should state longitudinal/cross wire diameter or area, spacing, grade, sheet length/width, edge projections and any lap or anchorage details.

What tests are relevant to welded mesh?

Depending on the selected standard and contract: wire tensile and yield properties, weld shear or joint integrity, geometry, mass/section, grade identification and traceable batch records.

Can you make custom-sized reinforcement panels?

Non-standard pitch, dimensions and cut layouts can be reviewed from drawings. Production tooling, tolerances, testing and order volume determine feasibility.

How do I request a factory quotation?

Send the standard edition, strength grade, wire sizes, two pitches, panel dimensions, overhangs, order quantity, inspection requirements, destination and requested shipment terms.
