TWO MAGNETIC STEEL CATEGORIES

Non-Oriented vs. Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel

Electrical steel selection starts with flux direction and the finished core. Non-oriented material is commonly selected for rotating machines; grain-oriented material is optimized for transformer flux along the rolling direction.

Non oriented electrical silicon steel coil with clean flat strip edge for motor stator and rotor laminations

Non-Oriented Electrical Steel (NGO / CRNGO)

Designed for alternating magnetic flux across multiple in-plane directions. Widely specified for motors, generators, compressors and stator/rotor laminations. Order the exact loss class, nominal thickness, coating and delivered condition.

See NGO reference grades ↗
Grain oriented electrical steel CRGO tightly wound coil with visible laminated metallic strip edge

Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel (GO / CRGO)

Processed to achieve favorable magnetic properties in the rolling direction. Used primarily for transformer and reactor cores; specify the required loss at a stated test induction, grade class and coating.

See GO reference grades ↗

Fully Processed Electrical Steel

Material supplied in its final annealed condition. Magnetic properties are assessed under the agreed standard and test method; lamination processing still requires controls for burr, coating and residual stress.

Semi-Processed Electrical Steel

Where specifically ordered, the purchaser carries out additional annealing to develop the specified magnetic properties. Procurement requirements differ from fully processed material, including heat treatment and test basis.

QUOTATION REQUIREMENTS

Electrical Steel Coil Specifications

A magnetic steel RFQ needs more than a steel grade and thickness. State the magnetic performance, coating and coil geometry that your cutting or winding line requires.

MAGNETIC PERFORMANCE

Core Loss, Induction and Coating

Compare test reports using the same induction and frequency. A quoted loss value at 1.5 T / 50 Hz is not directly interchangeable with one measured at 1.7 T / 50 Hz.

01 / SPECIFIC TOTAL LOSS

Core Loss · W/kg

Specify the allowable loss at the defined flux density and frequency, such as P15/50 for many NGO orders or P17/50 for GO orders.

02 / MAGNETIC RESPONSE

Induction · T

Check induction or permeability at the specified magnetizing field and test method, especially when comparing transformer grades.

03 / LAMINATION PERFORMANCE

Insulation & Stacking

Coating class, lamination factor, flatness, edge condition and processing history influence the final assembled core.

MEASUREMENT BASIS

Ask for Test Conditions Alongside Every Loss Value

Magnetic measurements depend on the standard method, flux density, frequency and specimen state. Core loss must be compared within the same measurement basis; coating properties and cutting stresses can affect downstream core performance.

  • State flux density and frequency together with specific total loss (W/kg).
  • Ask for the induction or permeability requirement where applicable.
  • Confirm Epstein or single sheet test method under the ordered standard.
  • Check coating compatibility with stamping, slitting, bonding and required heat treatment.

COIL PLANNING TOOL

Electrical Steel Coil Length Calculator

Estimate the theoretical strip length from nominal thickness, width and mass per coil. Useful for planning slitting, stamping and unloading; it is not a magnetic performance or net shipment weight guarantee.

Enter Coil Dimensions

Estimated strip length per coil———

Choose a grade or gauge to fill the thickness. Density is an editable planning input because it varies by material chemistry and grade.

Calculation Basis

A strip's theoretical weight per metre is calculated from its flat cross section and nominal material density. Coating weight, gauge tolerance, winding gaps and packaging are outside this estimate.

kg/m = thickness(mm) × width(mm) × density(g/cm³) ÷ 1000
Length (m) = coil mass (kg) ÷ kg/m

1. Confirm fully processed or semi-processed delivery.
2. Confirm tested magnetic grade and insulation coating.
3. Confirm coil ID, OD limit and mass tolerance before shipment.

MILL ROUTE & DELIVERY CONDITION

Cold-Rolled Electrical Steel Production

Electrical steel is produced with tightly managed composition, rolling and heat treatment. The final magnetic properties depend on the production route, grain structure, annealing and surface insulation.

  • Cold rolling controls nominal gauge and strip geometry.
  • Annealing and processing establish the specified magnetic condition.
  • Coating is selected for interlaminar insulation and downstream core fabrication.
  • Final coil supply may involve slit width, edge inspection, protective packing and grade identification.

PROCUREMENT QUESTIONS

Electrical Steel Coil FAQ

What is the difference between NGO and GO electrical steel?

Non-oriented electrical steel is selected for cores with changing magnetic flux direction, such as rotating electric machines. Grain-oriented electrical steel has favorable properties along its rolling direction and is principally used for transformer cores. Choose according to the magnetic circuit and the stated standard.

What thicknesses are used for electrical steel coils?

Common fully processed NGO gauges include 0.35, 0.50 and 0.65 mm. Common GO gauges include 0.23, 0.27, 0.30 and 0.35 mm. The available grade/gauge combination depends on the standard and confirmed supply.

What does P15/50 or P17/50 mean on a test report?

These notations refer to specific total core loss measured under stated magnetic test conditions: 1.5 T at 50 Hz or 1.7 T at 50 Hz respectively. Compare test results using the same measurement basis.

Is CRGO interchangeable with CRNGO for electric motors?

Motor laminations commonly require non-oriented electrical steel because magnetic flux changes direction through the core. Grain-oriented grades serve directional magnetic paths. Material selection must match the approved core design and loss requirements.

What does fully processed mean?

Fully processed electrical steel is delivered in its final annealed magnetic condition under the specified product standard. Semi-processed steel requires additional customer heat treatment to develop the required properties.

Can electrical steel be supplied as slit coils?

Slit coil can be discussed with the required strip width, tolerance, edge-burr limit, coating and coil ID. Availability and technical feasibility are confirmed for the requested grade and quantity.

What should an electrical steel inspection certificate include?

State required grade identification, thickness/width tolerances, magnetic loss, induction or permeability test conditions, coating properties and any third-party inspection. Documentation follows the ordered standard and contract.

How should I request an electrical steel coil quotation?

Send NGO or GO type, standard and edition, exact grade, nominal gauge, strip width, coating, coil ID/OD limits, mass per coil, total tonnage, destination and required magnetic test data.
