FORMING / DRAWING / STRUCTURAL STEEL

Choose the Right Galvanized Coil Grade

Different base grades respond differently to roll forming, stamping, drawing and structural loading. Match the substrate to the finished part rather than buying on coating appearance alone.

EN 10346 / GENERAL FORMING

DX51D+Z

Widely requested cold-forming substrate for profiling and general fabrication. Specify coating and bend requirement.

EN 10346 / ENHANCED FORMING

DX52D+Z

A drawing-quality option when the finished part needs more forming capability than general commercial use.

EN 10346 / DEEP DRAWING

DX53D+Z

For applications with more demanding forming operations. Confirm mechanical and coating acceptance conditions.

EN 10346 / STRUCTURAL

S350GD+Z

Strength-graded galvanized coil for specified structural forming work; verify yield strength and profiling conditions.

ASTM A653 / UNITED STATES

CS / FS / SS Grades

Commercial, forming and structural categories use distinct mechanical requirements. Choose the product type in the RFQ.

JIS G 3302 / JAPAN

SGCC & Related Grades

Specify SGCC or the required JIS forming/structural designation, zinc mass, finish and tolerances.

Zinc Coating Mass & Corrosion Protection

Coating mass affects sacrificial protection, forming behavior and downstream paint performance. Select it based on the project environment and the applicable product standard.

EN +Z designationMin. total coating mass (g/m²)Nominal guide thickness / faceOrdering note
Z100100Approx. 7 µm per sideFor defined lower coating-mass requirements
Z140140Approx. 10 µm per sideCommon fabrication enquiry
Z180180Approx. 13 µm per sideA higher mass option, subject to forming requirements
Z275275Approx. 20 µm per sideOften specified for roofing and outdoor components
Z350350Approx. 25 µm per sideSpecify with process, bend radius and service conditions
Specify required corrosion life using the actual exposure environment, detailing and maintenance plan. A zinc coating designation alone does not establish a guaranteed service life.
SPANGLE / SKIN-PASS / PROTECTION

Galvanized Coil Surface Finishes

Specify appearance, coating uniformity and temporary protection separately. A bright visible pattern should not be used as a substitute for coating test results.

01 / SURFACE

Regular Spangle

Visible crystallized zinc pattern. Specify an agreed sample if surface appearance matters.

02 / SURFACE

Minimized Spangle

More restrained visual texture, typically considered for appearance-sensitive or coated applications.

03 / FINISH

Skin-Passed

A finishing operation that can improve flatness and surface consistency according to the ordered product.

04 / PROTECTION

Passivated or Oiled

Select surface protection and storage conditions to help manage transport staining and fabrication needs.

EN / ASTM / JIS PROCUREMENT

Galvanized Steel Coil Standards Explained

Use the project drawing or customer specification to select the controlling standard and quality documentation. Different standards may classify substrates and coatings differently.

01 / EUROPE / EN

EN 10346

Continuously hot-dip coated flat steel products for cold forming and structural applications; defines grade and coating designations.

02 / UNITED STATES / ASTM

ASTM A653/A653M

Hot-dip zinc-coated or zinc-iron alloy-coated steel sheet in coil and cut-length form. Different product categories have different strength and formability rules.

03 / JAPAN / JIS

JIS G 3302

Hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheets and coils including SGCC and additional forming or structural grade designations.

EN, ASTM and JIS designations are specifications within different systems, not automatic one-for-one equivalents. Confirm the purchase standard, edition, grade, coating test and tolerance requirements.

GI COIL MASS / LENGTH ESTIMATE

Galvanized Steel Coil Weight & Length Calculator

Use the actual basis of thickness before entering coil dimensions. Coated coil weight depends on base steel gauge, zinc coating mass and actual weighing.

Estimate GI Coil Length & Weight

Enter the bare steel substrate thickness plus total two-side zinc coating mass. This calculation adds zinc mass to the steel substrate weight instead of double-counting the coating.

Estimated running length per coil—
——

Illustrative only. Nominal mass, coated sheet tolerances and mill test results govern final commercial weight.

STEEL + ZINC MASS

Calculate coated coil mass without treating GI as bare steel.

Approx. kg/m = (base steel mm × width mm × 0.00785) + (zinc coating g/m² × width m ÷ 1000).

Length (m) = net coil kg ÷ kg/m.

  • Steel density used: approximately 7.85 g/cm³
  • Coating mass entered as both sides combined
  • Net coil mass excludes strapping, cores and packaging
  • Finished coated thickness is not the same as bare substrate thickness
HOT-DIP COATING / COIL HANDLING

How Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Coil Is Produced

A controlled coating line combines an appropriate substrate with zinc coating and surface finishing. The delivered coil specification determines what is inspected and documented.

01 / SUBSTRATE

Steel Substrate

The selected forming or structural substrate is rolled to the specified thickness and width.

02 / COATING

Continuous Zinc Coating

GALVANIZED COIL / INDUSTRIAL BUYER FAQ

Galvanized Steel Coil Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers on zinc mass, grades, surface treatments and bulk ordering requirements.

What is galvanized steel coil?

It is flat steel supplied as coil with a protective zinc coating, commonly applied by a continuous hot-dip process. The steel grade, zinc mass and product standard must be specified.

Is DX51D+Z the same as Z275?

No. DX51D identifies the steel grade and +Z the type of metallic coating; Z275 specifies a zinc coating mass designation and must be stated separately.

Does Z275 mean 275 g/m² on each side?

No. Under EN 10346, Z275 refers to a minimum total coating mass for both coated surfaces under the specified test method.

Are Z275 and G90 identical?

They have broadly similar numerical coating masses but belong to different standards and acceptance rules. Quote and inspect against the actual ordered specification.

What coil thickness should I specify?

Clarify whether your project states the finished coated thickness or the bare steel substrate thickness. A weight calculation using both concepts without adjustment can be misleading.

Can I order regular or minimized spangle?

Surface appearance can be part of the purchase requirements. Specify regular/minimized spangle and any sampling or inspection criteria.

Can galvanized coil be used for roofing?

It is commonly converted into roofing and cladding profiles. Appropriate base grade, coating mass, profile design and environmental exposure need review.

Can I request narrow slit strips?

Submit the finished strip widths, parent coil dimensions, edge quality, quantity and packing requirements so availability and processing can be quoted.

What is the difference between GI and Galvalume?

GI typically refers to zinc-coated steel; Galvalume is an aluminum-zinc metallic coating system with a different specification. Use the coating required by your service conditions.

Is galvanized coil automatically suitable for deep drawing?

No. Forming suitability depends on the steel substrate grade, condition, coating and part geometry. Drawing grades should be specified explicitly.

Which documents can I request?

A material test certificate and agreed inspection records can be discussed at quotation. Additional coating, mechanical or third-party tests should be specified before order confirmation.

How do I request bulk pricing?

Send the standard, substrate grade, zinc mass, surface finish, dimensions, coil ID, mass per coil, total quantity, destination and delivery requirements.
