Specify ASTM A106 for high-temperature service or the approved seamless-pipe specification for your fluid system. Grades, heat treatment and testing follow the ordered document.
See seamless standards ↗For specified welded pipe, identify ASTM A53 Type E, GB/T 3091 or the applicable contract standard, together with OD, wall, end finish and inspection scope.
Review welded pipe RFQ data ↗For pipeline projects, identify API 5L grade, PSL 1 or PSL 2, manufacturing method and supplementary requirements. Pipeline qualification follows the project specification.
Compare pipe grades ↗For round, square or rectangular load-bearing tubing, reference the required structural tubing standard, such as ASTM A500, rather than assuming pressure-pipe requirements apply.
Quote the complete pipe designation. Grade, manufacturing method and inspection basis matter as much as nominal size.

Common GB seamless-pipe grade requests; confirm the grade and acceptance basis with GB/T 8163.
Specify the approved pipe material against the project piping code, design pressure, temperature and service medium. The pipe material standard defines product acceptance; the engineering design determines fitness for the application.
API 5L requests should identify grade, PSL 1 / PSL 2, pipe-making route, dimensions, inspection and any service-specific supplements, especially for demanding transport applications.
Match the steel pipe material specification to the intended duty. Separate product acceptance standards from dimensional schedules and project engineering codes.
Carbon steel pipe available in specified seamless or welded types, black or zinc-coated.
Seamless carbon steel pipe for specified high-temperature service.
Seamless or welded line pipe for pipeline service, including PSL requirements.
Standard outside diameters and wall schedules for wrought steel pipe.
Seamless non-alloy steel tubes with specified room-temperature properties.
Welded non-alloy steel tubes for specified pressure service.

The edition stated on your contract governs acceptance. For API 5L, confirm 47th-edition requirements and any project supplements. A pipe schedule indicates nominal wall thickness by size; design pressure and service suitability require engineering verification.
NPS identifies a nominal pipe series. The outside diameter stays the same within a size; a thicker wall changes inside diameter and pipe mass. Select a reference row for the calculator.

Published dimensions and theoretical weights are for preliminary enquiry comparison. Nominal wall tolerances, mill dimensional tolerances, coating and contract mass basis follow the applicable standard and order. Schedule is a dimensional designation, not a pressure rating.
Estimate theoretical pipe weight from outside diameter, wall thickness, steel density, length and number of pieces. Use the confirmed mill weight for final freight and invoicing.
The reference size table fills OD and wall automatically. You may then edit either field for a custom diameter or wall thickness.
Theoretical mass per metre is based on the annular cross section of a round pipe. Inputs use outside diameter D and nominal wall t in millimetres.
kg/m = π × (D − t) × t × density / 1000
Density is entered in g/cm³. Total MT = kg/m × length × quantity ÷ 1000.
Surface condition and ends affect fabrication, handling and installation. Specify the coating and end preparation according to the pipe standard and project drawing.
Pipe specification depends on design service. Identify the governing code and required tests before comparing manufacturing routes and grade offers.

Different pipe specifications require different manufacturing routes. Source seamless or welded pipe against the grade, manufacturing method and acceptance criteria specified on your project documents.
Set inspection requirements in the purchase order. The pipe material standard, PSL level where applicable, and agreed supplements determine which tests and records are required.
Packing is planned around OD, wall thickness, number of lengths, end protection and unloading conditions at the destination.
Keep processing requirements tied to the pipe specification. Quote optional operations alongside the requested product and tolerance.
Plan combined mill material orders around the specifications and purchase schedule your project needs.
Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld; ERW pipe is formed from strip and welded along its length. Select the route according to the product standard, pipe size, service conditions and inspection requirements.
ASTM A53 covers specified black or zinc-coated steel pipe in seamless and welded types. ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. Their grades and acceptance requirements follow separate product specifications; specify the exact standard on the purchase order.
PSL refers to product specification levels under API 5L. PSL 2 involves additional controls and tests for the applicable grade and service requirements. The pipeline design documentation should state the required PSL and supplementary conditions.
NPS is a nominal pipe-size designation. Schedule identifies nominal wall thickness for each NPS under the dimensional standard. For example, NPS 2 has a nominal OD of 60.33 mm, Sch 40 wall of 3.91 mm and Sch 80 wall of 5.54 mm.
Wall thickness is one part of the design. Pressure suitability also depends on material properties, temperature, manufacturing tolerances, corrosion allowance, weld efficiency and the applicable piping or pipeline design code.
