Source carbon steel wire rod in low- and high-carbon grades. Compare chemistry, rod diameters, cooling conditions and coil specifications, then send your required grade mix and tonnage for a practical factory quotation.
Compare the Four Grades ↓Specify the steel grade and the finished-wire process before selecting a coil.
Carbon steel wire rod is typically hot rolled and delivered in coils for subsequent descaling, drawing, cold heading or other conversion operations. Your downstream process determines which chemistry and surface-control requirements matter most.
Use the product cards below to compare individual material grades. This hub covers general sourcing; detailed chemical and application notes belong to the linked grades.

Carbon content and downstream processing requirements should drive grade selection.
Lower-carbon grades are commonly chosen for wire drawing routes where workable ductility, suitable surface condition and forming consistency are primary concerns.
Higher carbon content makes the cooling path, pearlitic microstructure, decarburization and surface defects critical purchasing parameters for subsequent drawing.
The required coil shape and grade specification are as important as the nominal steel diameter.

| Grade | Carbon C | Manganese Mn | Primary reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAE 1006 | ≤0.08% | 0.25–0.45% | SAE J403:2024 |
| SAE 1008 | ≤0.10% | 0.30–0.50% | SAE J403:2024 |
| SAE 1080 | 0.75–0.88% | 0.60–0.90% | SAE J403:2024 |
| SWRH82B | 0.79–0.86% | 0.60–0.90% | JIS G 3506:2024 |
SAE 1006 and 1008 have low carbon limits but are not automatically equivalent. The wire-rod manganese ranges and applicable product-analysis allowances need to be checked.
SAE 1080 and SWRH82B are governed by different grade systems. For SWRH82B, JIS G 3506:2024 also gives Si 0.15–0.35% and P / S each ≤0.030%; contract test requirements remain essential.
Select inspection and cooling requirements based on what the wire will become.
Confirm scale condition, laps, seams, rolled-in defects, diameter uniformity and coil handling characteristics before wire drawing.
For demanding drawing routes, agree on pearlite-related microstructure, decarburization, surface defects and relevant tests instead of relying on a generic tensile number.
The finished wire standard and drawing process determine whether a rod grade is suitable.
Feeding multi-pass drawing operations with grade-appropriate surface and cooling control.
Low-carbon rod for downstream processing into nails and selected fastener wire.
General drawing feedstock subject to downstream annealing and finished-wire specification.
Low-carbon rod for drawing and subsequent mesh fabrication under the finished-mesh standard.
1080 and 82B raw material for qualified higher-strength drawn-wire processing routes.
Selected 82B material may be processed into prestressing wire or strand; finished products require separate certification.
A clear conversion route helps avoid selecting rod by chemistry alone.
Confirm the applicable chemistry and traceable steel heat for the selected SAE or JIS grade.
Form the wire rod at the required nominal diameter and collect the material into coils.
Apply the agreed cooling route; verify dimensions, surface and any requested metallurgical criteria.
The buyer may descale, draw, anneal or further process the rod to a separate finished-wire standard.
Company-wide operating data combined with specification-led purchasing support.
8 million MT of total annual steel output supports broad steel procurement requirements across the company.
1 million MT of company-wide regular inventory; specific wire rod grades, diameters and coil masses must be confirmed.
Order specifications can identify chemistry, heat traceability, surface checks and the agreed mill test documentation.
Grade-specific quotations, coil packaging requirements and shipment documentation can be coordinated against your purchasing schedule.
Two independent methods: diameter/length theoretical mass and coil-count procurement tonnage.
Use nominal diameter and estimated total rod length. This formula is for planning only; it does not replace mill weighing.
Formula: π × (d/2)² × L × 0.00785 kg, where d is in millimetres and L in metres. Density 7,850 kg/m³.
Use the agreed nominal coil mass and the number of coils. Suitable for container and bulk-order quantity planning.
Actual coil mass and shipment weight will vary. Final commercial weight is established from the supply agreement and mill scale records.
Production conditions should be aligned with grade and downstream drawing performance.
Wire rod requirements are reviewed in terms of chemistry, rolling dimensions, cooling, coil formation and subsequent wire-conversion needs. The final acceptance basis is the agreed technical specification, not a general description of the production route.
Ask for grade-specific availability instead of relying on company-wide inventory numbers.
The same nominal steel grade can be offered in different coil masses or diameter programmes. Supply should be confirmed against the exact grade, finish, quantity and required delivery window.
Grade: SAE 1008 | Diameter: Ø6.5 mm
Quantity: 50 MT | Coil mass: approximately 2 MT / coil
Use: Wire drawing for welded mesh feedstock
Documents: Heat analysis and specified mill test record
Agree on test and reporting details before confirming your order.
Depending on the grade and application, inspection may cover heat analysis, dimensional tolerance, coil surface and selected microstructural or decarburization requirements. Documentation should identify the batch and the applicable standard edition.
Options depend on steel grade, mill programme and separately quoted processing.
Coordinated quantities by rod diameter and grade.
Mill-acceptable minimum and maximum coil weight limits.
Agreed drawing quality, descaling readiness and acceptable surface condition.
Microstructure, decarburization and other material verification when specified.
Coil handling and readable batch labels are essential to wire mill receiving operations.
Coils are arranged for shipment using suitable binding, identification labels and packing procedures agreed for the export route. Packing documents may identify grade, diameter, bundle or coil number and mill heat when applicable.
A complete grade-led enquiry helps the team respond with the correct processing route and supply conditions.
Share the grade mix and downstream application so the quotation is relevant.
Use the detailed product pages for technical and application-specific purchasing information.
Concise purchasing guidance on grades, standards, coil supply and downstream conversion.
Hot-rolled carbon steel wire rod is normally supplied in coils as feedstock for drawing, forming and other wire conversion. It is distinct from finished wire or wire products.
The main pages cover SAE 1006, SAE 1008, SAE 1080 and 82B (SWRH82B). Each grade has a different chemistry and preferred processing route.
Both are low-carbon grades. Compare the permitted chemistry, wire-rod manganese range, surface quality and your drawing or forming process before selecting one.
Both are high-carbon grades, but SAE 1080 follows the SAE chemical-grade system and SWRH82B follows JIS G 3506. Their full specification and acceptance requirements differ.
No. Selected SWRH82B rod may be processed into prestressing wire or strand, but the finished product must independently meet its own material standard and testing requirements.
Use the grade chemistry requirement (for example SAE J403:2024 or JIS G 3506:2024) together with the applicable wire rod product requirements such as ASTM A510/A510M-25 when relevant.
Ø5.5–16 mm is a useful enquiry range for many SAE wire rod programmes, while some high-carbon programmes include larger diameters. Actual availability is confirmed by grade and mill.
No. Coil mass varies by producer, diameter and equipment. Specify an acceptable coil mass range; the 2 MT example in the calculator is illustrative.
For demanding drawn-wire applications, chemical analysis, microstructure, decarburization, surface discontinuities, diameter variation and agreed tensile data can be important.
No. Cold drawing is a downstream conversion operation. Finished cold-drawn wire properties differ from those of the hot-rolled coil.
For planning, calculate rod mass from nominal diameter and estimated length, or multiply nominal coil mass by coil count. Actual shipment weight comes from mill weighing.
Share grade, standard edition, diameter, total tonnage, acceptable coil mass, drawing application, quality requirements, delivery destination and document needs.
