MATERIAL DESIGNATIONS

Choose the Carbon Steel Coil Grade

Match your material specification to manufacturing requirements. Commercial drawing steel, structural steel and HSLA steel have different acceptance criteria.

ASTM hot-rolled

A1011 CS / SS

Carbon sheet or structural designations; specify the precise ASTM type and grade on the order.

ASTM cold-rolled

A1008 CS / DS

Cold-rolled sheet designations selected around commercial forming or drawing requirements.

Chinese structural

Q235B

Common carbon structural grade requested in hot-rolled strip under the specified GB product standard.

Chinese low-alloy

Q355B

Higher-strength low-alloy structural grade; distinguish it from ordinary low-carbon forming grades.

European structural

S235JR / S355JR

Hot-rolled structural steel grade choice tied to EN 10025-2 and relevant order conditions.

European cold forming

DC01 / DC04

Cold-rolled low-carbon sheet grades specified under EN 10130 for different forming needs.

These are examples of procurement designations across different material systems, not a substitute list. ASTM, GB and EN designations are checked against the ordered standard and supplied heat analysis.

RELEVANT MATERIAL & DIMENSION STANDARDS

Select the material standard, the dimensional tolerance standard and the ordered supply condition separately. The referenced editions should be checked against your contract before placing an order.

SURFACE CONDITION

Black, Pickled & Oiled, or Cold-Rolled Finish

The coil surface affects handling, downstream fabrication and corrosion protection during transit. State the surface you require and whether the coil will be further coated, formed or processed.

Hot-rolled blackOxide scale remains from hot rolling; typical appearance is darker and less uniform.
HRPOAcid pickling removes hot-rolling scale; a light oil film helps temporary storage protection.
Cold-rolledSmoother rolled appearance; surface quality, skin-pass and annealing condition are order-controlled.
Slit edgeEdge burr, camber and strip width are specified for automated line feeding.

Surface appearance does not establish material grade or corrosion-resistant coating. Galvanized and Galvalume products have separate metallic coating specifications.

Illustrative dimensions only—not published inventory, guaranteed tolerances or a product-specific offer. Nominal kg/m = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00785, assuming steel density 7,850 kg/m³. Productive width, gauge capability, coil ID and mass range depend on grade and mill route.

CALCULATE BEFORE ORDERING

Carbon Steel Coil Weight & Length Calculator

Estimate strip length and total tonnage from nominal gauge and net coil weight. Figures support procurement planning, not a formal shipment weight.

Estimate coil strip length

Estimated strip length / coil339.7 m29.438 kg/m nominal3 coils · 30.000 MT total
ESTIMATION METHOD

Coil length from net strip mass

kg per metre = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00785
Estimated metres per coil = net coil mass (kg) ÷ kg per metre

The calculation uses a nominal steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. Actual yield and invoiced mass depend on measured thickness profile, edge trimming, winding condition and certified weighbridge data.

  • Use net steel mass, excluding pallets or wrapping.
  • Enter one coil weight rather than the total shipment weight.
  • Request allowable tolerance and actual inspection records for repeat orders.

MANUFACTURING & ROLLING ROUTES

Hot Strip Rolling, Pickling & Cold Reduction

Carbon steel coil is produced through a defined flat-rolling route. The specified condition determines surface appearance, gauge capability and downstream behavior.

  • Hot rolling: reheated slab is reduced through rolling stands, cooled on the run-out table and wound into a coil.
  • Pickling: controlled scale removal prepares strip for further processing or HRPO delivery.
  • Cold rolling: cleaned hot band is reduced to the specified gauge; annealing may follow when formability is required.
  • Coil identification: grade, lot identity, dimensions, winding and packing remain traceable in the supply documentation.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Carbon Steel Coil FAQ

Answers for specification and bulk purchase planning.

How do hot-rolled and cold-rolled carbon steel coils differ?

Hot-rolled coil is rolled at elevated temperature and may retain dark oxide scale. Cold-rolled coil undergoes further reduction and typically has tighter gauge control and a smoother surface. The exact properties depend on the steel grade and final condition.

Is carbon steel coil the same as galvanized steel coil?

Carbon steel coil refers to the base steel material family. Galvanized coil is steel with a specified zinc coating. State the coating standard and mass if you need a corrosion-protective metallic finish.

Which grades can be requested?

Typical enquiries include ASTM A1011 carbon or structural designations, ASTM A1008 carbon/drawing designations, Q235B, Q355B, S235JR, S355JR, DC01 and DC04. Availability and suitability depend on the exact standard and ordered dimensions.

Can you quote pickled and oiled hot-rolled steel coil?

HRPO is an orderable condition for selected hot-rolled coils. Provide the material grade, gauge, width, surface condition, oil preference and packing requirements.

What do coil ID and coil weight mean?

Coil ID is the inside diameter needed for decoiler compatibility. Net coil mass affects handling and production batch planning. Specify acceptable ID, coil weight range and maximum outside diameter.

How is carbon steel coil length estimated?

Divide the net coil mass in kilograms by nominal kilograms per metre. For typical carbon steel, nominal kg/m equals thickness in mm multiplied by width in mm multiplied by 0.00785. Actual length depends on measured dimensions and mass.

Which inspection documents should be requested?

Order the material test certificate, heat identification and the chemical, mechanical and dimensional inspections required by the governing standard. Additional customer inspections should be agreed before shipment.

Can I order narrow slit coils or sheets?

Slitting and cut-to-length may be quoted from suitable master coils. Specify width, burr tolerance, edge condition, sheet length, leveling and packing requirements.

What should I send to obtain a factory quotation?

Send the grade and material standard, hot/cold-rolled condition, thickness, width, tolerance, coil ID, coil weight, total quantity, surface condition, inspection requirement and destination port.
