ASTM / GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

ASTM A480/A480M-25b

General requirements for flat-rolled stainless steel products, including dimensions and the purchase-order requirements.

EUROPE

EN 10088-2:2024

Delivery conditions for hot- and cold-rolled stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for general purposes.

CHINA / COLD-ROLLED

GB/T 3280-2015

Cold-rolled stainless steel plate, sheet and strip product requirements.

SURFACE FINISH

Specify the Correct Coil Surface Finish

Surface codes identify mill condition or additional mechanical finishing; they are independent of stainless steel grade. Establish the finish and appearance criteria before ordering.

Common finish options

FinishProcess / conditionTypical buying consideration
2BCold rolled, annealed, pickled and skin passedGeneral fabrication and further finishing
BA / 2RCold rolled and bright annealedBright, reflective coil surface
No.1 / 1DHot rolled, annealed and pickledMatte surface, heavier-gauge fabrication
No.4Mechanically polished / brushed finishDefined appearance, texture and direction
HLHairline mechanically finishedConsistent directional finish and protection

Brushed and hairline finishes are ordered subject to coil-processing capability, agreed surface texture and the relevant inspection method.

GAUGE & LINEAR WEIGHT

Stainless Steel Coil Size Reference

Illustrative thickness and width combinations show nominal strip weight for a 7.93 g/cm³ stainless grade. These examples support planning and are not a list of confirmed stock sizes.

BULK ORDER PLANNING

Stainless Steel Coil Length & Weight Calculator

Estimate strip length in a coil and total order mass using nominal dimensions and an approximate stainless steel density. Results are planning figures, not a contractual shipping weight.

Enter your stainless coil specification

Estimated strip length per coil———
CALCULATION BASIS

Plan length and transport mass

The nominal strip linear mass comes from cross-section and the selected approximate density. Coil length is calculated from the net mass per coil divided by kg/m.

Linear mass (kg/m)
Thickness (mm) × width (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000.

Coil length (m)
Net coil mass (kg) ÷ linear mass (kg/m).

Order mass (MT)
Net coil mass (kg) × number of coils ÷ 1,000.

304, 316 and ferritic grades have different typical densities. The calculator uses indicative values; use the specification or mill-confirmed density where precision matters.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Stainless Steel Coil FAQ

What is the difference between hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel coil?

Hot rolling is suited to heavier starting gauges and typically gives a matte mill condition after annealing and pickling. Cold rolling reduces thickness and supports tighter dimensional control and finishes such as 2B or BA. Exact properties depend on grade and condition.

Which stainless steel coil grades can I inquire about?

Common requests include 201, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 310S and 430. The applicable standard, required chemistry and final supply condition should be included in the purchase order.

How do 304 and 316L stainless steel coils differ?

316L is a molybdenum-bearing, low-carbon austenitic grade often selected for more demanding corrosion and welding applications. Material selection still depends on the service environment, fabrication method and project specification.

What do 2B, BA and No.1 mean?

They describe stainless coil surface conditions: 2B is cold rolled, annealed, pickled and skin passed; BA or 2R is bright annealed; No.1 or 1D is hot rolled, annealed and pickled.

Can I purchase stainless steel coil in slit widths?

Slitting can be considered for specified master coils. Provide your target width, edge burr tolerance, coil ID, weight and any film or packaging requirement.

How do I calculate stainless steel coil weight or length?

Nominal strip kg/m is thickness in millimetres multiplied by width in millimetres multiplied by approximate density in g/cm³, divided by 1,000. Divide net coil mass in kg by kg/m for estimated strip length.

Can I order stainless steel coils for food-contact equipment?

Some stainless steel grades are widely used in food equipment fabrication. A suitable grade, finish and cleaning design must be selected for the actual process and any applicable food-contact rules.

Which inspections should be specified?

Orders commonly identify heat analysis, mechanical condition, thickness and width tolerances, surface finish, edge quality, coil identity and a material test certificate. Supplementary tests should be agreed in advance.
