201 is a chromium-manganese-nickel austenitic grade. Verify the chemistry on the actual mill certificate instead of using a general “200 series” description.
| Element | ASTM Type 201 / UNS S20100 (mass %) |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.00–18.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 5.50–7.50 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 3.50–5.50 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.15 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |

| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Chromium contributes to the stainless passive layer. Nickel, manganese and nitrogen help control the austenitic structure and mechanical response. Processing, surface condition and environment remain important in service.
These reference minima are associated with annealed Type 201 stainless steel. Cold-worked coil may have different strengths, hardness and ductility.
| Property | Annealed Type 201 reference |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, Rm | ≥ 655 MPa (95 ksi) |
| 0.2% yield strength, Rp0.2 | ≥ 310 MPa (45 ksi) |
| Elongation, 50 mm | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness | ≤ 100 HRB |
| Density, calculation reference | 7.86 g/cm³ |
Strength and formability change with rolling reduction and heat treatment. For spring-like or work-hardened strip, define the target temper and use the relevant product specification instead of annealed values.
Finish selection influences cosmetic quality, downstream polishing, protection film and packing. Confirm the acceptable reference sample before volume orders.

Type 201 is often considered for cost-sensitive stainless applications with controlled service conditions. Grade selection should reflect moisture, chemicals, cleaning agents and long-term exposure.
201 offers an austenitic stainless option for selected fabricated products. Chromium content supports a passive surface, while the overall resistance to corrosion depends on surface condition, fabrication and exposure.
For coastal air, frequent chloride cleaning, chemical process service and other aggressive exposures, compare performance requirements with 304 and 316L before selecting materials.
Panels, trim and interior fixtures for locations with an appropriate corrosion exposure assessment.
General formed parts, covers and visible components with defined surface-finish criteria.
Enclosures, channels and formed sheet-metal items with appropriate thickness and forming design.
Parent coil for narrower strips, blanks and sheets after agreed cut-to-width/length processing.
Selected indoor decorative and architectural parts where cleaning and corrosion conditions are suitable.
Selected formed components subject to tool trials, bend radii, work-hardening behaviour and finish needs.
Estimate coil length from steel mass, thickness and width. Actual shipment quantity is confirmed by net weighbridge or mill packing data.
The estimate uses a Type 201 reference density of 7.86 g/cm³ (7860 kg/m³). Supply a net metal mass per coil, excluding packing.
kg per running metre = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00786. Approximate length (m) = net mass (kg) ÷ kg/m. Actual mill density, thickness tolerances, coil trimming, surface protection and packing may affect reported net/gross quantities.
Ask for exact coil and packing details ↗Coil production involves controlled rolling, annealing, surface treatment and coiling. The order specification determines the intended final gauge, condition and surface appearance.
Work with one contact to confirm the grade, processing condition, documentation and shipment details.
Draw on company-wide steel manufacturing and supply resources while receiving a quote specific to 201 stainless coil.
Discuss chemistry reporting, test certificate scope, coil identification and independent inspection requirements.
Specify slitting, sheeting, edge quality and coil packing details for your fabrication workflow.
Align the quantity, delivery terms, packing and commercial documents with your import requirements.
Provide the fabrication dimensions and tolerance targets with your stainless coil request. Processing options are reviewed against material condition, thickness, surface finish and available equipment.
For stainless coil, grade designation is only one line on the purchase order. Surface quality, heat treatment, dimensional tolerances and traceability are equally important to the finished product.
Ask for the exact coil dimensions, required finish and tonnage. Commercially similar 201 coils can differ in surface condition, thickness tolerance, heat number and edge condition.
Company-wide inventory figures describe the broader steel business. Grade-specific 201 stainless coil availability, lead times and processing quantities are confirmed for each enquiry.
The packing plan should protect stainless surfaces during lifting, inland transport and sea freight. Define packing and coil-eye requirements together with the destination and unloading method.
Material grade substitution should be based on the corrosion environment, fabrication process and contracted standard, rather than appearance alone.
Send the medium, service environment and fabrication requirements for a grade-specific discussion.
Answers to frequent purchasing questions about chemical composition, finish selection, corrosion environment, coil weight and documentation.
Type 201 / UNS S20100 is an austenitic chromium-manganese-nickel stainless flat-rolled material. Coil is supplied for fabrication or conversion into narrower strip and cut sheets.
ASTM A240/A240M covers applicable stainless plate, sheet and strip. ASTM A480/A480M supplies associated general dimensional and surface requirements. ASTM A666/A666M may be relevant for explicitly ordered cold-worked conditions.
Type 201 uses more manganese and generally less nickel than 304. Corrosion performance, strength and work-hardening behaviour differ; evaluate operating conditions and production trials instead of assuming interchangeability.
Annealed austenitic material is generally low in magnetic response. Cold rolling and forming can create some magnetic attraction, so a simple magnet test is not a reliable alloy certificate.
Service suitability depends on chloride concentration, salt deposition, cleaning, moisture and finish. Higher-alloy grades may be preferable in aggressive coastal or chemical environments; request an application review.
For UNS S20100, typical specified limits include chromium 16–18%, manganese 5.5–7.5% and nickel 3.5–5.5%. The contracted edition and mill test certificate control final acceptance.
Published annealed values include minimum tensile strength 655 MPa, 0.2% yield strength 310 MPa and 40% elongation. Cold-worked temper products use different acceptance criteria.
Common requests include 2B and BA for cold-rolled coil, No. 1 for hot-rolled material, and processed No. 4 or hairline finishes. Actual finish availability depends on gauge, width and order quantity.
Slitting can be included in an order-specific processing enquiry. Provide finished width, thickness, acceptable burr, coil ID, surface requirements and target quantity.
Use nominal kg/m = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00786. Divide coil net steel mass (kg) by kg per metre; actual lengths depend on density and thickness tolerance.
Specify UNS S20100, standard and edition, thickness, width, finish, edge, ID, coil weight, quantity, processing, inspection documents, destination and required delivery period.
Some market designations use regional or commercial variants. Request UNS S20100 with an agreed ASTM standard and heat analysis if this exact grade is required.
Send UNS S20100, the standard edition, thickness, width, surface finish and net tonnage. Include processing drawings and documentation requirements for a quotation aligned with your production schedule.
Send your required grade, dimensions, quantity and destination. Our team will review the inquiry.
