GRADE / COATING / COIL DIMENSIONS
SGLCC is a Japanese general-use grade for continuous hot-dip 55% aluminum-zinc alloy-coated sheet and strip. Specify the AZ coating class, base steel gauge, finished width, surface treatment, coil weight and inspection scope together for a precise bulk quotation.
SGLCC identifies a JIS commercial-quality material. The purchased coil is fully defined only when coating mass, base thickness, surface finish and coil geometry are also confirmed.
| Parameter | Procurement specification |
|---|---|
| Material designation | SGLCC — general-use hot-dip 55% aluminum-zinc coated steel strip, cold-reduced substrate |
| Primary specification | JIS G 3321:2022; reference chemical and bend data cited with edition notes |
| Standard product concept | Commercial-quality coated coil for specified profiling, bending and sheeting; not a certified structural-strength grade |
| Coating composition | Nominally about 55% Al, 43.4% Zn and 1.6% Si in the conventional AZ alloy; actual bath and coating per mill specification |
| AZ coating class | AZ90 / AZ120 / AZ150; AZ170 / AZ185 / AZ200 by applicable grade and contract agreement |

Separate the cold-reduced steel substrate from the aluminum-zinc layer. The elements below refer to publicly available JIS G 3321:2019 steel-melt limits; the contractual 2022 edition and MTC govern acceptance.
| Steel substrate element | 2019 reference maximum (mass %) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.15 | General-purpose base steel chemistry |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.80 | Substrate melt-analysis limit |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.050 | Residual-element control |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.050 | Residual-element control |

Match coil marks, cast analysis, coating inspection and dimensional certificates to the shipped goods.
SGLCC is a general-use JIS grade rather than a specific tensile-strength class. Mechanical guarantees need to match the actual specification edition, product gauge and agreed test plan.
| Property | SGLCC procurement approach | Condition / caution |
|---|---|---|
| Yield strength | Confirm by mill data and contract | 205 MPa appears as a commonly used reference in JIS G 3321:2019 notes, not a blanket SGLCC guarantee |
| Tensile strength | Confirm by mill data and contract | 270 MPa is a traditional reference value; specify a required minimum explicitly if needed |
| Elongation | Agree a gauge-specific test requirement | No single fixed elongation minimum should be assumed across all gauges |
| Coating adhesion / bending | Specify the applicable JIS bend test | Reference: 180° bend; inner spacing depends on AZ mass class and edition |
| Drawing quality | Evaluate SGLCD or SGLCDD | Drawing grades have separate chemistry and forming requirements |
| Structural design | Select an SGLC strength class if required | For declared yield/tensile criteria, evaluate structural SGLC400/440/etc. under the applicable standard |
JIS G 3321:2019 includes SGLCC notes describing commonly used 205/270 MPa values while its commercial-grade mechanical table does not impose one universal strength/elongation set. Confirm all agreed criteria with the current contractual standard and delivered certificate.
Share the forming geometry, minimum bend radius, surface condition, coating category and expected appearance. Trial forming and agreed coating-adhesion acceptance help reduce rework in profile production.
JIS AZ numbers denote a minimum three-point average coating mass measured across both faces together, expressed in g/m². Use the exact requested designation, rather than describing the coating as an approximate micrometre thickness.
AZ90: 90 g/m² minimum three-point average across both surfaces; used when contract requirements permit.
AZ120: 120 g/m² minimum combined three-point average; verify service environment and bendability.
AZ150: 150 g/m² minimum combined three-point average; request surface and edge requirements by project.
AZ150 refers to the combined coating mass on two sides, rather than 150 g/m² per side.

Estimate strip length and metal mass per metre using base steel thickness plus the total two-sided AZ coating mass. Use these numbers for early planning, then confirm net weight with the mill.
Enter base steel thickness (BMT), not total coated thickness. Select a coating mass in g/m² covering both surfaces together.
Theoretical estimate excludes packaging, strapping, dimensional deviations and variation in actual coating mass. Verify the BMT/TCT convention.
kg/m = BMT(mm) × width(mm) × 0.00785 + AZ coating(g/m², both faces) × width(mm) ÷ 1,000,000. Length(m) = net coil mass(kg) ÷ kg/m. The calculation assumes a 7.85 g/cm³ steel substrate.
An AZ-coated coil starts with a controlled steel substrate, followed by strip preparation, continuous hot-dip 55% aluminum-zinc alloy coating, surface treatment, inspection and recoiling.
For SGLCC, material grade and coating quality must both be verified. Confirm the JIS edition, AZ mass class, spangle and any downstream forming or paint requirements before scheduling production.
A usable factory quote combines an identifiable JIS grade, confirmed AZ coating, dimensional tolerances, inspection documents and a workable shipping plan.

Answers to common technical questions on the JIS standard, AZ coating class, alloy chemistry, formability, sheet conversion, coil-length estimates and international purchasing.
SGLCC is the JIS general-use designation for hot-dip 55% aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet and strip under JIS G 3321. It is typically ordered with an AZ coating-mass class and coil dimensions.
JIS G 3321:2022 is the current edition listed by major standards distributors. Identify the edition in your purchase order and confirm the exact certificate requirements.
They are both used for general-purpose aluminum-zinc coated flat steel, but JIS and EN grades are governed by different documents. Treat them as specification alternatives only after confirming chemical, mechanical, coating and dimensional acceptance.
SGLCC is general-use material, while SGLCD is specified for drawing quality. More demanding draw operations require an appropriate drawing grade and forming tests.
AZ150 describes a minimum coating mass class of 150 g/m² as a three-point average on both sides combined, subject to the specified JIS edition. It is not 150 g/m² on each side.
AZ90, AZ120 and AZ150 are common ordering categories. Other grades including AZ170, AZ185 and AZ200 may be addressed subject to the product standard, grade restrictions, contract and actual mill supply.
Those figures appear as traditional reference values in older JIS-related material. They should not be treated as universal current-edition guarantees for SGLCC. Specify the required tensile testing and acceptance values separately.
SGLCC is a material grade symbol in JIS G 3321. Some manufacturers also market distinct magnesium-added products under the name SGL. Specify the exact bath chemistry and proprietary product if that is what your project requires.
It is a possible coil substrate for roll-formed roofing or cladding. Final approval must address sheet thickness, profile, span, load, corrosion exposure and building-code requirements.
Slitting and cut-to-length supply can be discussed with the coil order. Provide finished widths, lengths, edge requirements, coil masses and packaging preferences.
It adds the total two-sided coating mass to the calculated bare-steel mass per unit area. Entering TCT in the BMT field would double count the coating mass.
