API 5L Line Pipe

For pipeline projects, identify API 5L grade, PSL 1 or PSL 2, manufacturing method and supplementary requirements. Pipeline qualification follows the project specification.

Structural hollow sections are a different purchase specification.

For round, square or rectangular load-bearing tubing, reference the required structural tubing standard, such as ASTM A500, rather than assuming pressure-pipe requirements apply.

GRADE SELECTION

Common Carbon Steel Pipe Grades

Choose the exact designation in the governing standard. Pipe grades across ASTM, API, EN and GB have different technical and inspection requirements.

GRADE REFERENCE

ASTM A53 Grade B

Black / galvanized; seamless or Type E welded pipe depending on order. Specify the pipe type and finish.

GRADE REFERENCE

ASTM A106 Grade B

Seamless carbon steel pipe frequently specified for high-temperature piping. Order mechanical and test requirements per A106.

GRADE REFERENCE

API 5L Grade B

Line pipe designation for pipeline orders. Quote the API edition and PSL level.

GRADE REFERENCE

API 5L X42 / X52

Line-pipe strength grades. PSL, toughness, weld and supplementary testing requirements come from the order.

GRADE REFERENCE

EN P235TR1 / TR2

Non-alloy steel tube grades for the specified seamless pressure-tube standard EN 10216-1.

GRADE REFERENCE

GB 20 / Project Grade

Common GB seamless-pipe grade requests; confirm the grade and acceptance basis with GB/T 8163.

Pressure piping

Specify the approved pipe material against the project piping code, design pressure, temperature and service medium. The pipe material standard defines product acceptance; the engineering design determines fitness for the application.

Pipeline projects

API 5L requests should identify grade, PSL 1 / PSL 2, pipe-making route, dimensions, inspection and any service-specific supplements, especially for demanding transport applications.

Carbon Steel Pipe Standards

Match the steel pipe material specification to the intended duty. Separate product acceptance standards from dimensional schedules and project engineering codes.

BLACK / WELDED / SEAMLESS

ASTM A53/A53M-24

Carbon steel pipe available in specified seamless or welded types, black or zinc-coated.

SEAMLESS HIGH-TEMP

ASTM A106/A106M-26

Seamless carbon steel pipe for specified high-temperature service.

LINE PIPE

API 5L · 47th Ed. (2026)

Seamless or welded line pipe for pipeline service, including PSL requirements.

NPS & SCHEDULE

ASME B36.10

Standard outside diameters and wall schedules for wrought steel pipe.

EN SEAMLESS PRESSURE

EN 10216-1:2013

Seamless non-alloy steel tubes with specified room-temperature properties.

EN WELDED PRESSURE

EN 10217-1:2019

Welded non-alloy steel tubes for specified pressure service.

GB WELDED FLUID

GB/T 3091-2025

Welded steel pipes for low-pressure fluid delivery.

GB SEAMLESS FLUID

GB/T 8163-2018

Seamless steel pipes for fluid transport.

The edition stated on your contract governs acceptance. For API 5L, confirm 47th-edition requirements and any project supplements. A pipe schedule indicates nominal wall thickness by size; design pressure and service suitability require engineering verification.

PIPE SIZE & WALL REFERENCE

Carbon Steel Pipe Sizes: Sch 40 & Sch 80

NPS identifies a nominal pipe series. The outside diameter stays the same within a size; a thicker wall changes inside diameter and pipe mass. Select a reference row for the calculator.

Published dimensions and theoretical weights are for preliminary enquiry comparison. Nominal wall tolerances, mill dimensional tolerances, coating and contract mass basis follow the applicable standard and order. Schedule is a dimensional designation, not a pressure rating.

ORDER ESTIMATING TOOL

Carbon Steel Pipe Weight Calculator

Estimate theoretical pipe weight from outside diameter, wall thickness, steel density, length and number of pieces. Use the confirmed mill weight for final freight and invoicing.

Input Your Pipe Order

Estimated theoretical order weight———

The reference size table fills OD and wall automatically. You may then edit either field for a custom diameter or wall thickness.

Calculation Basis

Theoretical mass per metre is based on the annular cross section of a round pipe. Inputs use outside diameter D and nominal wall t in millimetres.

kg/m = π × (D − t) × t × density / 1000
Density is entered in g/cm³. Total MT = kg/m × length × quantity ÷ 1000.

1. Select the pipe grade and product standard.
2. Select schedule or enter actual OD × wall.
3. Verify testing, length, end finish and final mass basis.

PROCUREMENT QUESTIONS

Carbon Steel Pipe FAQ

What is the difference between seamless and ERW carbon steel pipe?

Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld; ERW pipe is formed from strip and welded along its length. Select the route according to the product standard, pipe size, service conditions and inspection requirements.

How do ASTM A53 Grade B and ASTM A106 Grade B differ?

ASTM A53 covers specified black or zinc-coated steel pipe in seamless and welded types. ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. Their grades and acceptance requirements follow separate product specifications; specify the exact standard on the purchase order.

What is API 5L PSL 1 versus PSL 2?

PSL refers to product specification levels under API 5L. PSL 2 involves additional controls and tests for the applicable grade and service requirements. The pipeline design documentation should state the required PSL and supplementary conditions.

What do NPS, Sch 40 and Sch 80 mean?

NPS is a nominal pipe-size designation. Schedule identifies nominal wall thickness for each NPS under the dimensional standard. For example, NPS 2 has a nominal OD of 60.33 mm, Sch 40 wall of 3.91 mm and Sch 80 wall of 5.54 mm.

Does a heavier schedule automatically make a pipe suitable for higher pressure?

Wall thickness is one part of the design. Pressure suitability also depends on material properties, temperature, manufacturing tolerances, corrosion allowance, weld efficiency and the applicable piping or pipeline design code.

Can I request black and galvanized carbon steel pipes together?

Yes. List each line item with its product standard, grade, required coating, pipe size and quantity. Galvanizing is quoted against the relevant product standard and coating specification.

What documents can accompany an order?

State the required mill test certificate, heat traceability, dimensional report, hydrostatic or NDT records and any third-party inspection in your RFQ. The final documentation package is confirmed in the purchase contract.

What should I send for a carbon steel pipe quotation?

Include the standard and edition, grade, seamless or ERW process, NPS or OD, wall schedule or thickness, ordered length, quantity, end type, inspection requirements and destination port.
