PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Low-Carbon and High-Carbon Wire Rod for Conversion

Specify the steel grade and the finished-wire process before selecting a coil.

Wire rod is an industrial feedstock

Carbon steel wire rod is typically hot rolled and delivered in coils for subsequent descaling, drawing, cold heading or other conversion operations. Your downstream process determines which chemistry and surface-control requirements matter most.

  • Low-carbon grades are widely specified for general drawing, nails, binding wire and mesh wire feedstock.
  • High-carbon grades support qualified routes for stronger drawn wire and specialized wire products.
  • Coil weight, diameter tolerance, surface condition and mill test records should be agreed with the order.

MATERIAL SELECTION

Low-Carbon vs High-Carbon Wire Rod

Carbon content and downstream processing requirements should drive grade selection.

LOW-CARBON · SAE 1006 / 1008

General Wire Drawing & Forming

Lower-carbon grades are commonly chosen for wire drawing routes where workable ductility, suitable surface condition and forming consistency are primary concerns.

Typical enquiries: nail wire, tie wire, welded-mesh feedstock, general-purpose cold-drawn wire.
HIGH-CARBON · SAE 1080 / SWRH82B

High-Strength Wire Feedstock

Higher carbon content makes the cooling path, pearlitic microstructure, decarburization and surface defects critical purchasing parameters for subsequent drawing.

Typical enquiries: high-carbon drawing stock, qualified spring-wire and prestressing-wire conversion routes.
Grade names are not interchangeable across SAE and JIS systems. Finished wire or strand performance depends on subsequent processing and its own governing standard.

STANDARDS & EDITIONS

Applicable Carbon Steel Wire Rod Standards

The chemical-grade standard and the rod delivery specification serve different purposes.

DocumentScopeProcurement use
SAE J403:2024SAE carbon steel chemical-grade definitionsSAE 1006 / 1008 / 1080 chemistry; review edition and heat analysis
ASTM A510/A510M-25General requirements for carbon and alloy wire rod and coarse round wireCommon procurement and product requirements for appropriate SAE orders

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Reference Carbon and Manganese Windows

Composition is a grade-selection aid; chemistry is confirmed by the agreed standard and mill test record.

GradeCarbon CManganese MnPrimary reference
SAE 1006≤0.08%0.25–0.45%SAE J403:2024
SAE 1008≤0.10%0.30–0.50%SAE J403:2024
SAE 10800.75–0.88%0.60–0.90%SAE J403:2024
SWRH82B0.79–0.86%0.60–0.90%JIS G 3506:2024

Low-carbon chemistry

SAE 1006 and 1008 have low carbon limits but are not automatically equivalent. The wire-rod manganese ranges and applicable product-analysis allowances need to be checked.

High-carbon chemistry

SAE 1080 and SWRH82B are governed by different grade systems. For SWRH82B, JIS G 3506:2024 also gives Si 0.15–0.35% and P / S each ≤0.030%; contract test requirements remain essential.

QUALITY CONDITIONS

Surface Condition, Cooling and Drawing Performance

Select inspection and cooling requirements based on what the wire will become.

Low carbon steel wire rod coils showing even turns and industrial coil surface

Low-carbon drawing coils

Confirm scale condition, laps, seams, rolled-in defects, diameter uniformity and coil handling characteristics before wire drawing.

High carbon steel wire rod coils for pearlitic drawing feedstock

High-carbon controlled-cooling coils

For demanding drawing routes, agree on pearlite-related microstructure, decarburization, surface defects and relevant tests instead of relying on a generic tensile number.

There is no single as-rolled tensile-strength guarantee applicable to all four grades, diameters and cooling conditions. Request values against the actual material condition and test method.

Consistent Processing Starts with the Order

Wire rod requirements are reviewed in terms of chemistry, rolling dimensions, cooling, coil formation and subsequent wire-conversion needs. The final acceptance basis is the agreed technical specification, not a general description of the production route.

  • Confirm grade and diameter assortment before production planning.
  • Discuss cooling and surface requirements for higher-carbon drawing routes.
  • Request specific mill inspections and heat traceability in the purchasing documents.
SUPPLY PLANNING

Coil Availability, Order Mix and Lead-Time Review

Ask for grade-specific availability instead of relying on company-wide inventory numbers.

Check grade, diameter and coil mass together

The same nominal steel grade can be offered in different coil masses or diameter programmes. Supply should be confirmed against the exact grade, finish, quantity and required delivery window.

  • Separate tonnage required for 1006, 1008, 1080 and 82B.
  • Request an approved diameter list and coil mass / packing range.
  • State whether the order requires a particular surface or cooling condition.

Example enquiry format

Grade: SAE 1008   |   Diameter: Ø6.5 mm
Quantity: 50 MT   |   Coil mass: approximately 2 MT / coil
Use: Wire drawing for welded mesh feedstock
Documents: Heat analysis and specified mill test record

Example only — not a statement of available stock, a confirmed coil weight or a promised lead time.
MILL INSPECTION

Quality Control and Mill Test Records

Agree on test and reporting details before confirming your order.

Technician inspecting carbon steel wire rod diameter and coil surface quality

Define the Acceptance Criteria

Depending on the grade and application, inspection may cover heat analysis, dimensional tolerance, coil surface and selected microstructural or decarburization requirements. Documentation should identify the batch and the applicable standard edition.

  • Heat number and grade identification for traceability.
  • Diameter and surface inspection, including agreed discontinuity limits.
  • Metallurgical and mechanical testing where specified for drawing requirements.
  • MTC and additional third-party verification if required and confirmed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Carbon Steel Wire Rod FAQ

Concise purchasing guidance on grades, standards, coil supply and downstream conversion.

What is carbon steel wire rod?

Hot-rolled carbon steel wire rod is normally supplied in coils as feedstock for drawing, forming and other wire conversion. It is distinct from finished wire or wire products.

Which grades are included in this carbon steel wire rod range?

The main pages cover SAE 1006, SAE 1008, SAE 1080 and 82B (SWRH82B). Each grade has a different chemistry and preferred processing route.

How do I choose between SAE 1006 and SAE 1008?

Both are low-carbon grades. Compare the permitted chemistry, wire-rod manganese range, surface quality and your drawing or forming process before selecting one.

How do SAE 1080 and SWRH82B differ?

Both are high-carbon grades, but SAE 1080 follows the SAE chemical-grade system and SWRH82B follows JIS G 3506. Their full specification and acceptance requirements differ.

Is 82B wire rod the same as finished prestressing strand?

No. Selected SWRH82B rod may be processed into prestressing wire or strand, but the finished product must independently meet its own material standard and testing requirements.

Which standards should I specify for wire rod?

Use the grade chemistry requirement (for example SAE J403:2024 or JIS G 3506:2024) together with the applicable wire rod product requirements such as ASTM A510/A510M-25 when relevant.

What is the standard diameter range?

Ø5.5–16 mm is a useful enquiry range for many SAE wire rod programmes, while some high-carbon programmes include larger diameters. Actual availability is confirmed by grade and mill.

Is wire rod always supplied in 2 MT coils?

No. Coil mass varies by producer, diameter and equipment. Specify an acceptable coil mass range; the 2 MT example in the calculator is illustrative.

What inspections matter for high-carbon wire rod?

For demanding drawn-wire applications, chemical analysis, microstructure, decarburization, surface discontinuities, diameter variation and agreed tensile data can be important.

Is low-carbon wire rod the same as cold-drawn wire?

No. Cold drawing is a downstream conversion operation. Finished cold-drawn wire properties differ from those of the hot-rolled coil.

How do I estimate the shipment weight?

For planning, calculate rod mass from nominal diameter and estimated length, or multiply nominal coil mass by coil count. Actual shipment weight comes from mill weighing.

What information should be included in an RFQ?

Share grade, standard edition, diameter, total tonnage, acceptable coil mass, drawing application, quality requirements, delivery destination and document needs.
