MATERIAL CERTIFICATE CHECK

Read the heat test results, not only the grade stamp.

A515 Grade 60 uses its own chemistry and tensile requirements. A515 and A516 may share a 415–550 MPa tensile class, but their grain practice, technical intent and purchase specifications differ.

For ASME work: State the vessel code, the applicable ASME SA-515 specification/edition, test scope and document wording on the request for quotation.
A515 GRADE SELECTION

Compare ASTM A515 Grades 60, 65 and 70

These grades share an intermediate/high-temperature boiler-plate specification but are separate strength classes. Engineering approval controls substitution.

Silicon — product analysis0.13–0.45%
Phosphorus≤0.025%
Sulfur≤0.025%

Carbon/manganese trade-off: A515 permits an additional 0.06 percentage point Mn for each 0.01 percentage point reduction in C below its specified maximum, subject to the standard's ceilings. Values shown are material specification requirements, not a claim about any unverified heat.

Request heat analysis before the final material approval.

For thick plate and weld-intensive pressure equipment, verify carbon, manganese, silicon and residual chemistry on the ordered heat. Welding consumables, preheat, heat input and any PWHT route depend on the actual material and procedure qualification.

  • Match chemical limits to your ordered nominal thickness.
  • Request heat-level identification and chemical test results.
  • Include any project carbon-equivalent or additional chemistry requirements at RFQ stage.

HEAT TREATMENT ROUTE

As-Rolled or Normalized: the 50 mm Threshold

ASTM A515 Grade 60 has a different standard heat-treatment threshold from ASTM A516. Specify the condition your project needs.

≤50 MM / TYPICAL

As-Rolled

Plates at or below 50 mm are normally supplied as-rolled where the design and order permit. Confirm finished thickness and material testing.

≤50 MM / WHEN ORDERED

Normalized / Stress Relieved

Normalization, stress relief, or both may be ordered. State the required mill condition and certificate evidence.

>50 MM / ASTM REQUIREMENT

Normalized

Plates over 50 mm are required to be normalized. Include thickness, test scope and expected heat-treatment record in the order.

Acceptance control: Verify the ordered heat-treatment condition on the MTC. Post-weld heat treatment of fabricated equipment is a separate design/code and WPS matter; it is not identical to mill normalization.

FABRICATION & DESIGN CHECK

Welding, Forming and High-Temperature Design Are Project-Specific

Grade 60 is an intermediate/higher-temperature steel specification. The grade name alone does not establish allowable stress at every service temperature.

CODE DESIGN

Design temperature

Determine allowable stress from the governing pressure-equipment code, edition, thickness, material condition and design case. Verify the applicable ASME material listing where needed.

PROCEDURE

Welding & preheat

Select WPS/PQR, consumables and preheat based on the actual chemical analysis, joint geometry, thickness and required toughness.

HEAT HISTORY

Forming & PWHT

Review cold/hot forming, fabrication heat exposure and PWHT with the material code and equipment manufacturer; arrange simulated-PWHT tests when specified.

A515 vs A516: A515 specifies killed steel with a coarse austenitic grain practice for intermediate/higher-temperature boiler and vessel service. A516 uses a different fine-grain material route for pressure-vessel service where improved notch toughness is important. Matching strength class does not make the specifications interchangeable.

PURCHASING FAQ

Answers for A515 Grade 60 Buyers

Confirm the boiler or vessel design code and any additional test scope before comparing two supplier quotations.

What is ASTM A515 Grade 60 boiler steel plate?

It is killed carbon-silicon steel plate specified for certain welded boilers and other pressure vessels in intermediate/higher-temperature service. Final material selection follows the equipment design code and approved drawings.

What are A515 Grade 60 mechanical properties?

Under ASTM A515/A515M-17(2022), the minimum yield strength is 220 MPa and tensile strength is 415–550 MPa. Base elongation is at least 25% in 50 mm or 21% in 200 mm, subject to A20/A20M rules.

When must ASTM A515 Grade 60 be normalized?

Plates over 50 mm must be normalized under the product standard. Plates 50 mm and below normally ship as-rolled but can be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both.

What is the difference between A515 Grade 60 and A516 Grade 60?

Both have a 415–550 MPa tensile strength class, but ASTM A515 calls for coarse austenitic grain practice for intermediate/higher-temperature service while ASTM A516 uses a different fine-grain material route. Engineering approval is required for substitution.

Is A515 Grade 60 the same as ASME SA-515 Grade 60?

ASME projects may specify the corresponding SA-515 designation, but the required ASME edition and certificate wording must be explicitly checked with the source and project code.

Does the grade guarantee a particular Charpy impact energy?

No single Charpy temperature/energy guarantee follows from the Grade 60 name alone. Request the intended temperature, energy, specimen direction, sampling and test standard where required.

Can A515 Grade 60 plate be UT inspected?

Yes, where the producing mill and order support the required examination method and acceptance level. Specify the relevant UT standard and required report before production.

Can you supply normalized and cut-size plate?

State the final thickness, heat-treatment condition, dimensions, cutting list and markings. We will confirm source-specific production and processing feasibility.

How do I estimate boiler plate weight?

For mm dimensions, kg per plate equals thickness × width × length × 0.00000785. Final shipment mass and tolerances are confirmed with the supplying mill.

What information should I send for an A515 Grade 60 quote?

Provide grade and specification edition, thickness × width × length, total quantity, heat-treatment condition, vessel code, inspection scope, certificate wording, destination and requested delivery date.
