SPECIFICATION CONTROL

ASTM and ASME document wording matters.

A516 Grade 60 is the 60–80 ksi tensile-strength class. Purchasers requesting ASME SA-516 Grade 60 should identify the project code and material specification edition, then confirm that the mill certificate supports the actual requirement.

Order check: Use the ASTM SI unit system consistently. Specify ASTM versus ASME document wording, supplementary tests and the acceptance edition on the purchase order.
GRADE SELECTION

Grade 60 vs Grade 65 vs Grade 70

Confirm the grade on your approved equipment drawing before requesting a material substitution. Strength class is only one part of pressure-equipment material selection.

Grade 65240 MPa450–585 MPaA separate strength class; verify fabrication and design-code approval.
Grade 70260 MPa485–620 MPaDifferent acceptance limits; do not exchange grades on price alone.
Grade selection: Pressure design thickness, minimum design metal temperature, forming, PWHT and inspection may alter which specification is accepted. Submit the material requisition if grade selection needs confirmation.
HEAT ANALYSIS & WELDABILITY

A516 Grade 60 Chemical Composition Control

Composition limits can depend on nominal plate thickness and the applicable specification. Always match heat analysis against the correct grade and purchase edition.

ElementControl for A516 Gr.60 orders
Carbon (C)Heat-analysis C max: ≤0.21% (t ≤12.5 mm), ≤0.23% (12.5–50 mm), ≤0.25% (50–100 mm), ≤0.27% (t >100 mm).
Manganese (Mn)Heat analysis 0.60–0.90% at t ≤12.5 mm (0.85–1.20% also permitted); 0.85–1.20% at t >12.5 mm. Allowed carbon/manganese adjustment may raise the upper limit as provided by the standard.
Silicon (Si)Heat analysis 0.15–0.40%.
Phosphorus (P)≤0.025% reference maximum; projects may specify a tighter limit.
Sulfur (S)≤0.025% reference maximum; lower-sulfur or sour-service requirements are quoted separately.
Carbon equivalent (CEV)Specify a project maximum or supplementary requirement when weldability control is required.
HEAT-BY-HEAT CERTIFICATION

Check the actual heat, not a generic chemistry chart.

For pressure-containing equipment, the material certificate should identify the heat number and corresponding chemistry. Grade 60 heat-analysis limits include carbon maxima from 0.21% to 0.27% depending on thickness, thickness-dependent Mn ranges, 0.15–0.40% Si and 0.025% maximum P/S. Confirm the ordered edition, permitted composition adjustments and any agreed supplementary conditions.

  • Confirm C, Mn, Si, P and S in the heat report.
  • Specify CEV or low-sulfur restrictions in the PO where applicable.
  • Discuss HIC-tested material as a separate, documented procurement route.
Technical boundary: A proposed mill may use tighter chemistry than the ASTM base limits. Read the actual A516 Gr.60 MTC, ordered specification edition, product analysis and any additional chemistry limits together.
HEAT TREATMENT

A516 Grade 60 Plate Delivery Conditions

Plate thickness and notch-toughness requirements influence whether the material is supplied as-rolled or normalized.

UP TO 40 MM

As-rolled — normal base route

Plates 40 mm and under are normally supplied as-rolled, subject to the applicable standard and project testing conditions. Normalized plate can be ordered.

OVER 40 MM

Normalized plate

A516 plates above 40 mm fall under the standard normalizing requirement. Specify any additional heat-treatment and certification conditions in the purchase order.

CHARPY REQUESTED

Normalize unless otherwise specified

For plates 40 mm and under ordered with notch-toughness testing, the normalizing provisions and purchaser exceptions need to be checked with the material specification.

Fabrication planning: If a vessel requires post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), include the service conditions, simulated PWHT test request where needed, and the applicable pressure-equipment design code in your RFQ.
CHARPY / SUPPLEMENTARY TESTS

Specify Impact Tests for Your Actual Vessel Design

Grade 60 is a pressure-vessel plate specification for projects where notch toughness is relevant. A specific Charpy test temperature and absorbed-energy target must follow the vessel code and order.

Set the Charpy requirements in the purchase order

  • Required test temperature from the vessel design specification.
  • Minimum absorbed energy and acceptance standard.
  • Longitudinal or transverse specimen orientation.
  • Sample size, thickness provisions and test frequency.
  • Any additional requirements for production weldments or heat treatment.

Coordinate supporting test documentation

  • MTC and heat number matching the supplied plate.
  • Additional CVN reports where ordered.
  • UT reports with named examination standard and acceptance level.
  • Third-party witnessing or inspection release if required.
  • PWHT simulation or drop-weight testing when specified.
Design responsibility: The equipment designer establishes design temperature and minimum design metal temperature (MDMT) under the governing code; the material order then identifies the required tests. The Grade 60 designation alone specifies neither one universal impact-test temperature nor a single minimum Charpy absorbed energy.
END USE

FABRICATION PLANNING

A516 Grade 60 for welded pressure equipment

Good fabrication begins with a compatible material condition and clear welding requirements. The purchaser and fabricator should align the plate MTC, welding procedure qualification, forming route and inspection plan before cutting.

  • State the required forming and cold-bending sequence.
  • Specify WPS / PQR and low-hydrogen welding practices as applicable.
  • Coordinate preheat and PWHT from actual thickness, joint and code requirements.
  • Maintain heat traceability after cutting, rolling and welding.

PRESSURE VESSEL PLATE FAQ

Answers for A516 Grade 60 buyers

If your project has a vessel code, MDMT, PWHT or sour-service requirement, specify it before comparing plate prices.

What is ASTM A516 Grade 60 used for?

It is pressure-vessel-quality carbon steel plate for fabrication of welded pressure equipment where the design specification calls for A516 Grade 60. The project code and material conditions govern final acceptance.

What are the mechanical properties of A516 Gr.60?

The ASTM SI minimum yield strength is 220 MPa; tensile strength is 415–550 MPa. The base minimum elongation is 25% over 50 mm and 21% over 200 mm, subject to A20/A20M specimen and thickness rules.

Is A516 Grade 60 supplied normalized?

ASTM A516/A516M-25 specifies normalization for plates over 40 mm. Plates at or below 40 mm are usually as-rolled, but ordered notch-toughness tests normally trigger normalization unless the purchaser specifies otherwise.

Does ASTM A516 Grade 60 guarantee a −40°C Charpy test?

No specific low-temperature Charpy energy guarantee follows from the Grade 60 designation alone. State test temperature, energy, specimen orientation, sampling and acceptance rules in the material order.

Can you supply ASME SA516 Grade 60?

State the ASME/ASTM certification wording and code edition in the RFQ. We will check whether the proposed producing mill, material documents and delivery route support the specified order.

Can A516 Gr.60 be used for sour service?

Grade 60 alone does not establish HIC-tested or sour-service performance. Include the applicable project testing method, acceptance limits and required mill route for a qualified quote.

Can you provide UT reports and third-party inspection?

Include the UT method, acceptance level, witness points and third-party requirements in the purchase order. Specific availability is confirmed for the source and plate thickness.

What should I send for pricing?

Send grade and edition, thickness × width × length, tonnage, heat treatment, test/inspection scope, project code, destination port and target delivery schedule.
