For A312 TP304L pipe, verify chromium 18–20%, nickel 8–13% and the lower-carbon limit against the ordered edition.
| Element | TP304L reference composition |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 18.00–20.00% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 8.00–13.00% |
| Carbon (C) | 0.035% max. (ASTM A312 pipe reference) |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.00% max. |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00% max. |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.045% max. |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.030% max. |
The 0.035% carbon figure is an ASTM A312 TP304L pipe reference, not a universal limit across every 304L product standard. Verify heat analysis, ordered edition and any tighter project chemistry.
A312 TP304L has distinct reference minima from TP304. Check the actual tensile test orientation, heat-treated condition and MTC.

Values are common ASTM A312 TP304L pipe reference minima; elongation depends on test direction, specimen configuration and the ordered specification. Do not substitute ASTM A240 sheet/plate mechanical criteria for an A312 pipe purchase.
Select ASTM A312 TP304L seamless, straight-seam welded or permitted heavily cold-worked welded pipe to match your approved piping class.
Seamless pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal weld seam and is suitable for welded system fabrication when the pipe class permits it. Specify the required OD, wall tolerance, heat-treated condition and inspections for your pipe class.
ASTM A312 also covers straight-seam welded and heavily cold-worked welded forms. State the permitted weld route, post-production heat treatment, examination method and weld traceability in your order.
Choose stainless S-series wall schedules by NPS or state exact outside diameter and nominal wall thickness.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | 21.3 | 2.11 | 2.77 | 3.73 |
| 1 | 33.4 | 2.77 | 3.38 | 4.55 |

| 12 | 323.9 | 4.57 | 9.53 | 12.70 |
Selected nominal values based on ASME B36.19-2022. S-series dimensions are specified separately from non-S schedule designations. Your project documents determine wall tolerance, corrosion allowance and pressure design.
Send your dimensioned pipe schedule for cut lengths, quantities and acceptance review.
The lower carbon level of TP304L reduces the tendency for chromium-carbide precipitation in weld heat-affected zones. It is commonly selected for welded pipe spools, industrial fabrication and service where intergranular corrosion after sensitization is a concern.
Choose real project or stainless pipe fabrication photographs that match the actual process.
A312 pipe is often procured with a mill or pickled surface, while mechanical polishing or designated surface roughness can be requested for selected applications.
For hygienic or pharmaceutical installations, confirm whether a separate hygienic tube standard, measured roughness or special cleaning documentation is specified.
Select TP304L for projects with welded assemblies and compatible process fluids, while confirming the full piping specification and corrosion conditions.

TP304L is the low-carbon UNS S30403 austenitic stainless pipe grade specified under ASTM A312 for qualifying seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold-worked welded products.
304L has a lower carbon limit, which helps reduce sensitization and related intergranular corrosion risk in weld heat-affected zones. Welding procedure and fluid chemistry still matter.
Published ASTM A312 TP304L pipe tables use 0.035% maximum. Many general 304L or ASTM A240 sheet/plate references use 0.030%; specify 0.030% on the PO if required.
ASTM A312/A312M-25 is the current ASTM pipe specification identified for this page. The purchase order should identify the exact edition governing acceptance.
ASTM A312 includes seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked welded austenitic pipe forms. Confirm the allowed manufacturing route, required inspection and finishing for your pipe class.
Specify NPS and ASME B36.19 S-series wall thickness such as SCH 10S, 40S or 80S, or provide exact OD and nominal wall in millimeters.
Common ASTM A312 TP304L pipe reference minima are 485 MPa tensile strength and 170 MPa 0.2% yield strength. Confirm values and specimen requirements in the contract edition.
Low carbon principally addresses sensitization risk. It does not automatically improve pitting resistance versus 304; chloride concentration, temperature and crevices still require assessment.
Sometimes. A dual-certified pipe must satisfy the complete applicable chemistry, strength and product-standard requirements of both grades, supported by the MTC.
No. ASTM A312 covers qualifying stainless pipe for corrosive and elevated-temperature service; A269 is a separate specification for general-service austenitic stainless tubing.
Use the pipe annulus area, nominal OD and wall, length, quantity and 7.90 g/cm³ reference density. The on-page calculator gives nominal bare-steel mass only.
