316L / S31603 differs from 304 in nickel and molybdenum content, and from conventional 316 in its lower maximum carbon content. Evaluate any dual 316/316L certification against the material test results and applicable standard.
These are annealed Type 316L flat-product minimum reference values. Cold-worked tempers and special design requirements need separate contract criteria.
| Property | Reference | Condition / Ordering Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate tensile strength (Rm) | ≥485 MPa | Annealed flat-rolled 316L reference |
| 0.2% yield / proof strength (Rp0.2) | ≥170 MPa | Annealed material; cold working changes strength |
| Elongation | ≥40% | Annealed flat-rolled reference test |
| Hardness | ≤95 HRB | Published annealed reference; confirm product standard |
| Density | 8.03 g/cm³ | ATI nominal value for theoretical coil calculation |
Cold-rolled commercial coil is commonly supplied in an annealed condition. Strength, hardness and remaining ductility differ when a cold-worked temper is ordered.
Assess forming radius, rolling direction, temper and tool lubrication for the component.
Low carbon helps limit sensitization risk, but weld procedure and cleaning remain important.
Molybdenum supports localized corrosion resistance; real media and temperature decide suitability.
Use actual media and design conditions to evaluate the benefit of molybdenum-bearing 316L rather than relying on a generic corrosion-resistant description.
316L contains approximately 2–3% molybdenum and is commonly selected where 304 does not offer the required margin against pitting or crevice corrosion. The low carbon content can be valuable for fabricated and welded assemblies.
Different finishes support different processing, hygienic design and appearance requirements. Grade, thickness and surface condition must be ordered together.
Cold rolled, annealed and pickled, followed by a light finishing pass. Suitable as a versatile starting surface for conversion and fabrication.
Bright annealed under a controlled atmosphere, generally with higher reflectivity. Request handling and protective film suited to visible components.
Hot-rolled, annealed and descaled surface for further fabrication or functional equipment.
Brushed and directional finishes for specified aesthetic requirements; agree grain and visual sample.
Define visible face, surface protection, scratch limits, edge and packaging requirements.
The purchase order should be precise about the delivered material, not only the stainless family or trade name.
Specify 316L / UNS S31603, ASTM edition, annealed or ordered cold-worked temper and documentation.
State gauge, width, tolerances, edge type, coil ID, individual net mass and winding requirements.
Choose 2B, BA, No. 1, No. 4 or qualified polished surface; list film, packing and inspection conditions.
Give media, fabrication, target tonnage, Incoterm, port and lead-time requirements for the quote.
Attach it to the global RFQ form. Confirm grade, test condition and surface expectations before pricing.
316L is widely used when a low-carbon molybdenum-bearing stainless alloy offers the desired combination of fabrication and corrosion resistance.
316L is chosen for formed and welded parts where austenitic stainless steel with added molybdenum is valuable. End-use compliance depends on the component design, surface, testing and cleaning protocol.
Fabricated covers, tanks and shells with corrosion exposure evaluated for the service media.
Steel feedstock for fabricated vessels and accessories where cleanability and documentation matter.
Panels, equipment frames and welded parts with appropriate surface and cleaning requirements.
Formed housings, shrouds and component stock subject to design temperature and media.
Coil input for stainless strip, blanking and sheet sales with controlled edges and gauge.
Material for sheet-metal and formed products subject to the purchaser’s fabrication specification.
Use the ATI nominal density of 8.03 g/cm³ to estimate net-coil running length. Results support planning and are not a certified shipment weight.
Enter nominal material dimensions and net mass per coil. The calculator updates as the input values change.
Nominal density: 8.03 g/cm³. Formula: kg/m = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00803; coil length (m) = net coil mass (kg) ÷ kg/m. Excludes strapping, wrapping and dimensional tolerance variation.
Estimate consumption, slitting throughput and transport quantities before the final measured coil data is available.
Review the route appropriate to the requested gauge and finish; individual production capability and lead time are confirmed at quotation.
A finished 316L coil may involve hot rolling, cold reduction, annealing, descaling, skin passing or polishing. Each step affects the delivered temper and surface condition.
Material suitability, verification and contract terms matter more than a generic stock claim. Plan grades and finishes using the requirements of your actual order.
The stated production and inventory figures describe our overall steel business, supporting multi-category procurement planning.
We organize enquiries by UNS, ASTM edition, size, finish, net coil mass and inspection requirements.
Request MTC, heat identification and additional third-party tests as agreed with the order.
Confirm packing dimensions, transport constraints, commercial terms and destination documentation.
Supply your downstream requirements at the quotation stage; processing method and tolerance acceptance are agreed with your order.
Processing options depend on grade, thickness, finish and the available line. Share your drawing and final application so the quotation can include the appropriate route.
Confirm slit width, allowable burr, flatness, finish protection, individual coil weight and winding direction before processing.
Request a documentary and physical inspection plan matched to the purchased specification, end-use and service environment.
A controlled 316L order links declared UNS S31603 chemistry to the supplied heat and the ordered condition. For critical components, include the necessary additional acceptance tests.
Confirm the requested material condition, coil width and net mass before promising delivery or arranging a downstream cutting schedule.
Availability should be checked against the full specification. A requested 2B finish, narrow width or particular coil ID may have different order conditions from a hot-rolled coil.
Our company-wide steel inventory does not imply that each 316L grade / width / finish combination is in stock today.
Detailed packing terms are agreed per order to reduce damage risk and support traceability from the warehouse to destination.
Packing needs to suit lifting, abrasion control, moisture protection, surface finish and destination handling. Bright or polished coils may need additional visible-side protection.
Compare material chemistry, application and purchased product form across the related steel portfolio.
Tell us the media, temperature, chloride level, surface finish and planned forming route to guide the material enquiry.
Practical answers about UNS S31603, molybdenum, finishes, corrosion service, coil dimensions and material testing.
316L / UNS S31603 is an austenitic stainless flat product containing molybdenum and a maximum of 0.030% carbon, supplied in coil or strip form for further processing.
ASTM A240/A240M-26 covers applicable stainless plate, sheet and strip; ASTM A480/A480M-25b provides general flat-product requirements. Specify the edition in your purchase order.
L indicates a lower maximum carbon content than regular 316. The lower carbon level is useful when welded fabrication creates a risk of sensitization.
Common UNS S31603 reference limits are 16–18% Cr, 10–14% Ni and 2–3% Mo by mass, with no more than 0.030% carbon.
No universal seawater suitability can be stated. Temperature, chlorides, stagnant conditions, crevices and cleaning chemicals affect pitting and crevice-corrosion risk.
316L includes 2–3% molybdenum and has a low-carbon limit, making it appropriate for some chloride-bearing and welded applications where 304 may offer less margin. Selection still depends on actual service.
Common requests include cold-rolled 2B, bright annealed BA, hot-rolled No. 1, and processed No. 4 or hairline. Finish and gauge availability are confirmed by quotation.
They are related grade designations, but ASTM and EN chemistry, mechanical tests and delivery rules may differ. Specify the exact standard you need.
