PROCUREMENT FAQAS/NZS 4671 500N Rebar Questions
Practical answers for structural contractors, reinforcement processors, engineering purchasing teams and international distributors.
What does 500N mean in AS/NZS 4671?
500 identifies the 500 MPa lower characteristic yield strength, while N means normal ductility. For a deformed ribbed 16 mm bar, D500N16 is a full designation; N16 may be used when the context is unambiguous.
What is the current AS/NZS 4671 edition?
AS/NZS 4671:2019 is the edition referenced on this page. Contracts should cite the applicable edition and any required project approvals.
Is 500N the same as 500E?
No. 500N has normal ductility requirements; 500E is a seismic class with a characteristic Agt at least 10%, tensile/yield ratio between 1.15 and 1.40 and upper yield limit 600 MPa.
What are the characteristic 500N mechanical requirements?
Lower characteristic yield ≥500 MPa, upper characteristic yield ≤650 MPa, lower tensile/yield ratio ≥1.08 and lower Agt ≥5%. Single-test acceptance follows the full conformity provisions.
Does 500N always guarantee 540 MPa tensile strength?
Not as a single fixed value for every bar. The standard uses characteristic yield and a characteristic tensile/yield ratio, with producer conformance and measured tests assessed by its specified procedures.
Which sizes are typical Australian D500N rebar sizes?
The Australian standard mass table lists nominal diameters 10, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 and 50 mm. Availability is mill- and order-dependent.
What does an N20 bar weigh?
AS/NZS 4671:2019 lists a nominal mass of 2.47 kg/m for Australian 500N N20. A 12 m bar is 29.64 kg and 100 bars are about 2.964 metric tonnes.
What chemical limits apply to 500N?
Cast-analysis maxima are C 0.22%, P 0.050%, S 0.050%, CEV 0.44%. Product-analysis limits are C 0.24%, P/S 0.055% and CEV 0.46%.
Is D500N suitable for welding?
The material specification addresses weldability under AS/NZS 1554.3 conditions. Actual welds still require the project-approved procedure, design and qualified execution.
How are 500N bars tested for bending?
For N-class deformed bars up to 16 mm, the standard specifies a 4d mandrel and the applicable 90° bend/rebend test. For diameters above 16 mm, it specifies a 4d mandrel with 180° bending.
Are coil and decoiled 500N bars available?
Coiled or decoiled forms may be possible for eligible sizes and processing routes. The producing mill and post-processing mechanical properties must be confirmed for the order.
How do we request a 500N bulk quotation?
Provide AS/NZS 4671:2019, grade D500N, nominal diameters, bar lengths and quantity/tonnage, required certificates, approved producer restrictions, destination and Incoterms.
