GRADE OVERVIEW

What Is AS/NZS 4671 Grade 500E Rebar?

500E identifies a 500 MPa strength grade with enhanced earthquake-ductility characteristics.

D500E Is a Seismic-Ductility Designation

AS/NZS 4671:2019 designates E as the earthquake (seismic) ductility class. For a deformed 20 mm reinforcing bar, the full designation is D500E20. This is distinct from normal-ductility 500N.

The classification regulates the characteristic yield-stress range, tensile-to-yield ratio and uniform elongation. Appropriate seismic detailing still follows the structural design standard and approved construction documents.

Purchasing note: Include the full grade and diameter in your order. Similar 500 MPa grades under other national standards should not be substituted without a structural engineer’s approval.

Four Procurement-Critical Properties

≥500Lower characteristic yield, MPa
≤600Upper characteristic yield, MPa
1.15–1.40Characteristic tensile/yield ratio bounds
≥10%Lower characteristic Agt

These values are specified on the standard’s statistical characteristic basis. Single-test limits, batch conformity and long-term quality should be assessed according to the full standard.

MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE

500E Seismic Ductility and Mechanical Properties

The earthquake class requires both elevated uniform elongation and controlled upper/lower characteristic strength limits.

Characteristic property500E requirementHow it is specified
Lower characteristic yield Rek.L≥ 500 MPaLower characteristic, P=0.95
Upper characteristic yield Rek.U≤ 600 MPaUpper characteristic, P=0.05
Lower characteristic ratio (Rm/Re)k.L≥ 1.15Lower characteristic, P=0.90
Upper characteristic ratio (Rm/Re)k.U≤ 1.40Upper characteristic, P=0.10
Lower characteristic uniform elongation Agt,k.L≥ 10.0%Lower characteristic, P=0.90
Test specimen conditionAs produced / aged as specifiedAS/NZS 4671:2019 Table 7.3
Do not infer a fixed tensile MPa value: Rm/Re is controlled as a characteristic ratio relative to measured yield; conformity uses the standard’s product testing and statistical acceptance provisions. These figures are not universal single-specimen thresholds.

What Should the MTC / Test Evidence Show?

  • Correct D500E grade, size, producer and lot reference.
  • Measured yield stress and maximum tensile strength using nominal area.
  • The measured Rm/Re ratio, Agt and test specimen condition.
  • Applicable batch conformity and producer long-term quality records.
  • Referenced edition, test method and any design-specific third-party requirements.
Where there is no clear yield phenomenon, the standard uses a 0.5% proof stress definition for the E ductility class. Refer to the specific material report.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Grade 500E Chemistry and Carbon-Equivalent Limits

The 500E carbon-equivalent limits differ from those of 500N; do not reuse the normal-ductility chemistry table.

Phosphorus (P)≤0.050%≤0.055%
Sulfur (S)≤0.050%≤0.055%
500E Carbon equivalent (CEV)≤0.49%≤0.51%
Source: AS/NZS 4671:2019 Table 7.1(A). Chemical limits are maximum mass percentages. Cast and product analyses have separate thresholds; CEV is calculated from the relevant alloying elements.

Verify Welding Conditions

Conformity to AS/NZS 4671 includes a weldability basis, but it does not replace a project-specific welding procedure. Review the material chemistry, connection type and site requirements against AS/NZS 1554.3 when applicable.

  • Document each mill heat and the applicable carbon-equivalent result.
  • Specify any welding, mechanical couplers, bent details or prefabricated cages in advance.
  • Use engineer-approved weld details, operator qualifications and inspection scope.
  • Keep D500E-specific tests after straightening, bending or other specified processing.
BEND AND REBEND TESTS

500E Reinforcing Bar Bend-Test Requirements

Laboratory acceptance tests are separate from allowable bend radii in approved fabrication drawings.

Material Conformity Test Overview

DiameterClass E mandrelTest arrangementAcceptance basis
d ≤ 16 mm4d90° bend, followed by reverse-bend procedureRebend to the standard’s required angle after ageing/cooling
d > 16 mm4d180° bendStandard bend test; no corresponding rebend angle
Reference: AS/NZS 4671:2019 Clause 7.2.3 and Table 7.4, for deformed bars other than mesh. A laboratory test mandrel is not automatically the allowable fabrication or site re-bending radius.

Cutting, Bending and Installation

500E reinforcement is often purchased to an engineer’s bar-bending schedule. Bar spacing, anchorage, couplers, bending radii and welding must follow the applicable concrete design/construction standards and approved fabrication instructions.

ENGINEERING USE CASES

Where Is 500E Seismic Reinforcing Steel Used?

Select the reinforcement grade by the project design specification, not by a generic claim that the steel is earthquake-proof.

Real reinforcement cage and bar tying at a structural concrete construction site in New Zealand or similar seismic project
01

Seismic Concrete Frames

Reinforcement for ductile beams and columns when the approved drawings specify E-class bar.

02

Shear Walls and Cores

Wall and core reinforcing cages within the engineer’s seismic detailing requirements.

03

Beam-Column Joints

Grade and detailing-controlled reinforcement at critical beam-column connections.

ENGINEERING PROCUREMENT FAQ

Grade 500E Rebar Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on earthquake ductility, grades, mill certificates, sizing and contract requirements.

What does Grade 500E mean?

500 refers to the lower characteristic yield stress of 500 MPa, and E denotes earthquake (seismic) ductility under AS/NZS 4671:2019. D500E20 identifies a deformed 20 mm bar.

Is AS/NZS 4671:2019 the edition used here?

Yes. The page references AS/NZS 4671:2019. Confirm the governing contract edition, amendments and project approval requirements at ordering.

Is 500E stronger than 500N?

Both have a 500 MPa lower characteristic yield. 500E has a tighter upper characteristic yield of 600 MPa, a tensile/yield ratio between 1.15 and 1.40 and Agt at least 10%; 500N has different normal-ductility limits.

What is the Grade 500E Agt requirement?

The lower characteristic uniform elongation at maximum force is at least 10.0%, assessed in accordance with the standard’s specified test and conformity procedures.

What is the nominal D500E25 weight?

AS/NZS 4671:2019 New Zealand Table 7.5(B) lists 3.85 kg/m for nominal 25 mm bar. A 12 m bar is 46.20 kg and 100 such bars total approximately 4.620 metric tonnes.

Which bar diameters appear in the New Zealand weight table?

The nominal New Zealand reference table includes 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40 and 50 mm. A published table does not mean every diameter is currently offered in Grade 500E.

Can Australian N24 be substituted for D500E25?

Not automatically. Australian 500N and New Zealand 500E are different grades with different common nominal diameters and properties. Obtain engineering approval of any proposed substitution.

What chemistry limits apply to Grade 500E?

The 2019 table specifies cast analysis maxima of C 0.22%, P/S 0.050%, CEV 0.49%; product analysis maxima of C 0.24%, P/S 0.055%, CEV 0.51%.

Can Grade 500E rebar be welded?

Welding is subject to the approved joint design, relevant AS/NZS 1554.3 requirements, the producing mill’s chemistry and the project welding procedures.

What bend and rebend tests apply?

For deformed E-class bars up to 16 mm, the standard uses a 4d mandrel with 90° bend and the specified rebend process. For sizes above 16 mm, a 4d mandrel and 180° bend are specified for the material test. Site bends are a separate design matter.

Does compliance mean a building will be earthquake-proof?

No. 500E is a material ductility classification. Seismic resistance depends on the full structural design, detailing, construction and inspection.

What information do you need to quote D500E?

Provide the edition, grade D500E, required diameters, straight/coil form, lengths, total quantity, producer approvals, certificates, destination and requested delivery terms.
