PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Zinc-Coated Wire for Industrial Processing

Corrosion protection, tensile properties and coil configuration must be specified together.

What Is Galvanized Steel Wire?

Galvanized steel wire is carbon steel wire protected by a zinc coating. For industrial purchasers, the actual product specification combines the underlying steel temper with finished diameter, zinc coating requirement, surface condition and winding format.

  • Material: zinc-coated carbon steel wire, supplied as coils or other agreed winding formats.
  • Protective layer: metallic zinc provides sacrificial corrosion protection, subject to the environment and coating continuity.
  • Supply route: hot-dip galvanizing or electrogalvanizing, subject to the manufacturing route and product standard.
  • Applications: fencing wire, mesh feedstock, agricultural wire, ties and qualified fabrication uses.
Procurement principle: “galvanized” describes the finish; a reliable order also specifies the zinc coating mass or class, tensile temper and finished wire dimension.

How to Write the Purchase Order

  • Give the diameter in millimetres and identify the measuring stage (bare core vs coated finished wire).
  • Identify one coating standard and edition rather than an undefined “heavy galvanized” description.
  • State the coating class and minimum mass in g/m², or any separate project requirement.
  • Confirm wire temper and specified tensile-strength acceptance range.
  • Include net coil weight, coil inner diameter, quantity, delivery destination and documentation.
The Ø0.5–6.0 mm range is for inquiries, not a promise that every diameter, temper or coating class is immediately available.

Theoretical bare-steel mass only: calculations use a solid round carbon steel section and density 7,850 kg/m³. The zinc coating adds weight and may increase the finished outside diameter. These diameter examples are inquiry sizes, not a live stock list.

Gauge conversion: BWG, SWG and other gauge systems can produce different millimetre diameters. Request a final diameter in mm rather than relying on gauge number alone.
STANDARDS & COMPLIANCE

ASTM A641 and EN 10244-2: Which Requirements Apply?

Use the product specification and the coating standard for their respective scopes.

Applicable Standards and Their Roles

ASTM A641/A641M-19(2025)General-use zinc-coated carbon steel wire in coils; soft, medium and hard temper; coating class and testing per order.
EN 10244-2:2023Mass, properties and testing of zinc or zinc-alloy coatings on steel wire and wire products.
Application-specific standardFinished products such as fence fabric or gabion wire may have additional dimensional, coating and fabrication requirements.
Contract specificationSets project-specific diameter, coating, temper, inspection and acceptance criteria.

Coating Class Is Not a Process Name

Hot-dip and electrogalvanized are manufacturing methods. “Regular” and numbered classes in an ASTM coating specification, or EN 10244-2 coating classes, refer to specified coating requirements.

  • ASTM A641 regular coating calls for full zinc surface coverage but does not set a universal minimum coating mass.
  • An ASTM numbered class has requirements for the applicable wire size; order the exact class and standard edition.
  • EN 10244-2 defines its own coating categories; an EN class should not be assumed equivalent to an ASTM class.
  • All ordered classes and coating results need to be tied to the correct product diameter and test basis.
ASTM A641 is a general-use wire standard. It does not automatically certify a finished fence panel, welded mesh, wire rope or another downstream product.

Actual corrosion behavior depends on coating mass, coverage, exposure, water retention, cut edges and service conditions.

What Does Zinc Coating Mass Mean?

Coating mass (g/m²) expresses zinc mass per unit of bare-wire surface area. It is not the same as wire mass in kg/m or a guaranteed corrosion-service life.

  • The requested class may correspond to a different minimum g/m² for different wire diameters.
  • Specify whether finished wire diameter includes coating thickness.
  • Confirm whether bending or forming follows galvanizing; severe deformation may affect the zinc layer.
  • Choose coating requirements for the real exposure category, including humidity and chemical contact.
A numerical g/m² value shown in the calculator is a customer-entered example, not an offered or guaranteed zinc coating class.
MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR

Soft, Medium and Hard Galvanized Wire Temper

Strength and formability are tied to final wire diameter and manufacturing condition.

Tempering and Tensile Requirements

On smaller screens, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.

ConditionProcurement consideration
Soft temperCommon request where flexibility and bending are important; confirm actual standard tensile range for diameter.
Medium temperBalances strength and forming requirements according to the agreed tensile acceptance.
Hard temperSelected for specified higher-strength uses; confirm wire size, process and mechanical testing.
After-galvanizing formingCheck whether the specified forming or wrapping operation requires special zinc adhesion testing.

Avoid Unqualified Strength Guarantees

ASTM A641 addresses soft, medium and hard temper. The required tensile property changes with temper, wire diameter and applicable specification. Do not accept one generic tensile strength for every galvanized wire coil.

  • Request the finished-wire tensile strength range in MPa or psi.
  • Set requirements for bending, winding, tying or further drawing.
  • Specify diameter tolerance and any elongation or wrapping requirement.
  • Agree testing frequency and sample/lot traceability before manufacturing.
Chemical composition and strength acceptance must be supported by the specified steel wire/product requirements and measured production data.
SURFACE & COATING TESTS

Galvanized Wire Surface and Coating Integrity

Define test criteria and inspection records instead of relying only on a bright visual finish.

COATING QUALITY

Coverage, Adhesion and Diameter Control

Galvanized steel wire should arrive with an agreed surface appearance and coating integrity. Inspection needs to match the actual intended use, including bending, twisting, mesh processing and exposure.

  • Appearance: inspect for missed coating, loose zinc, damage and visible contamination.
  • Coating mass: verify g/m² against the selected class or specified minimum.
  • Adhesion: use the applicable winding/wrapping test or agreed method.
  • Dimension: verify bare wire gauge, finished size and relevant tolerances.
  • Handling: protect against abrasion, coil damage and prolonged wet storage.

Which Material Fits the Specification?

Start with the required wire function, corrosion exposure and design life. Galvanized carbon steel wire is widely selected for economic zinc-coated protection; stainless wire may be specified where alloy corrosion performance, aesthetics or service constraints govern.

  • Assess exposure to wet, salt-laden or chemical environments.
  • Consider cut edges and abrasion during downstream fabrication.
  • Compare wire weight, tensile performance, winding and total cost of ownership.
  • Request the applicable product specification, not only a generic material name.

WEIGHT & QUANTITY

Galvanized Steel Wire Weight Calculator

Estimate separate steel and zinc mass, or calculate net order tonnes from coil weights.

01 / Wire Length + Zinc Coating Estimate

Input the bare steel core diameter, wire length and specified zinc mass. The tool adds estimated zinc mass to theoretical steel mass.

Theoretical steel + zinc— MT
— kgCarbon steel only
— kgApproximate zinc addition
— g/mEstimated combined running mass
— kgTotal estimated kilograms

Steel kg/m = πd²/4 × 0.00785 (d in mm). Zinc kg = π × (d/1000) × length(m) × coating(g/m²)/1000. This approximation uses bare-wire surface area; it omits tolerance, coating geometry and package tare. The 100 g/m² starting input is a user-adjustable example, not a coating guarantee.

02 / Coil or Spool Purchase Weight

Estimate the total order mass using your specified net mass per coil/spool, including coating where applicable.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Galvanized Steel Wire FAQs

Practical answers for choosing a wire coating, temper and packaging specification.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Galvanized Steel Wire FAQ

Procurement answers on zinc coating mass, wire temper, specifications and coils.

What is galvanized steel wire?

It is carbon steel wire with a protective zinc layer. Buyers should confirm core or finished diameter, coating class/mass, tensile condition and packaging.

Which ASTM standard applies to general-purpose galvanized wire?

ASTM A641/A641M-19(2025) covers soft, medium and hard temper zinc-coated carbon steel wire in coils for general use. Application-specific finished products may require additional standards.

Is hot-dip galvanized wire automatically more corrosion-resistant than electro-galvanized wire?

The galvanizing route alone does not define coating life. Compare actual zinc coating mass, continuity, service conditions and the relevant acceptance criteria.

What is zinc coating mass in g/m²?

It measures grams of zinc per square metre of the bare wire surface. The specified minimum depends on the applicable standard, coating class and wire diameter.

What does ASTM A641 regular coating mean?

Regular coating requires complete zinc surface coverage but does not specify a universal minimum zinc mass. If a minimum is needed, state the correct class or agreed g/m².

Are ASTM A641 coating classes the same as EN 10244-2 classes?

No automatic equivalence should be assumed. Select a specific standard and edition and verify the applicable diameter-based coating requirements.

Which wire temper should I specify?

Soft, medium and hard temper have different tensile and forming characteristics. Confirm finished diameter, tensile acceptance and the intended bending, tying or further drawing use.

Can I order electro-galvanized steel wire?

Electrogalvanizing can be specified for appropriate wire products. Confirm the available process, required coating mass and product standard with the producing mill.

Does the weight calculator include zinc?

The length-based calculator adds an approximate zinc mass using user-entered g/m² and bare wire diameter. Actual packed or invoiced mass depends on measurement and weighing.

Is galvanized wire suitable for wire mesh and fencing?

It may be used as feedstock when its wire diameter, temper, coating and forming properties match the finished product standard. Completed fencing or mesh requires separate acceptance checks.

How should galvanized wire coils be specified?

State coil bore, winding type, net coil mass, label information, strap/packaging requirements and destination.

What information is needed for a bulk quotation?

Provide the product standard, wire diameter basis and tolerance, zinc coating class or g/m², temper, coil weight, total quantity, inspection requirements and shipment destination.
