MATERIAL OVERVIEW

What Is BS 4449 B500C Rebar?

B500C is selected for British-Standard designs specifying higher Class C ductility alongside 500 MPa characteristic yield strength.

British-Standard Class C Reinforcement

B500C is a weldable ribbed steel reinforcement grade to BS 4449:2005+A3:2016. B500A, B500B and B500C share a 500 MPa characteristic yield strength but have distinct ductility requirements. Class C adds a higher minimum tensile-to-yield ratio, an upper ratio bound and greater total elongation at maximum force.

Design and procurement: The selected ductility class must match the approved structural specification. Confirm certification and bending requirements for the actual producing mill and shipment.

WELDABILITY & CHEMISTRY

B500C Chemical Composition & Carbon Equivalent

Use the applicable cast- and product-analysis limits and carbon-equivalent formula to evaluate weldability, backed by the ordered mill test certificate.

Maximum Chemical Contents (% by Mass)

ElementCast analysis max.Product analysis max.
Carbon (C)0.22%0.24%
Phosphorus (P)0.050%0.055%
Sulphur (S)0.050%0.055%
Copper (Cu)0.80%0.85%
Nitrogen (N)0.012%0.014%
Carbon equivalent (Ceq)0.50%0.52%
The standard includes limited compositional exceptions, such as conditional carbon adjustments and allowances for nitrogen-binding elements. Use the complete contractual standard for acceptance, rather than applying this summary table alone.

Carbon Equivalent & Welding Planning

Carbon equivalent helps assess the influence of alloying elements on weldability. For B500C, the cast-analysis limit is 0.50%, while product-analysis limit is 0.52%, subject to the standard provisions.

Ceq = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15
  • Request cast and product analysis as specified for the contract.
  • Confirm the weld type, joint design and fabrication plan with the project engineer.
  • Follow a qualified welding procedure and relevant requirements such as BS EN ISO 17660 where applicable.
  • Check any mandated third-party approval rather than assuming all B500C shipments have the same certificate.
RIB GEOMETRY, BENDING & IDENTIFICATION

B500C Rib Pattern, Rebend Test & Marking

Class C reinforcement has distinct alternating rib-angle identification alongside its characteristic ductility requirements.

Identifying B500C Rib Geometry

BS 4449 differentiates the three grades by the arrangement of their transverse ribs. B500C retains the opposed rib-series arrangement used for B500B, while the ribs within each series alternate between steeper and shallower inclination to the bar axis. The difference between rib angles is specified as at least 10°.

Marking verification: Grade identification by rib arrangement must be cross-checked with the producer identification, bundle tags and associated MTC. Generic site photographs do not prove a certified grade.

Bend and Rebend Requirements

Verify the relevant BS 4449 rebend condition, with the project-required bar diameter, test ageing/conditioning and mandrel diameter. Common manufacturer references describe a 90° bend followed by at least a 20° reverse bend; the specified mandrel differs by bar size.

  • Confirm the agreed standard edition and size-dependent bend mandrel.
  • Reconcile bend/rebend test certificates with the actual lot.
  • Use BS 8666:2020 for approved cutting and bending schedules, separately from grade acceptance.

SUPPLY FORMATS

Straight, Coiled & Decoiled B500C Steel Rebar

Material form, straightening route and length tolerance affect final acceptance and handling requirements.

Full-length bundles of ribbed steel ribbed reinforcement stored in an industrial steel yard

Straight Deformed Bars

For construction sites and stockists ordering full commercial lengths, straight ribbed bars can be quoted by diameter and bundle size.

Real industrial coils of ribbed reinforcing steel for automated handling

Coiled Reinforcement

Coils may be suitable for eligible nominal sizes and processing lines. State the grade, diameter, coil unit and processing requirements.

Straightened and cut ribbed steel reinforcing bars arranged by length for processing

Decoiled / Cut-to-Length

Where available, decoiled and cut bars can match fabrication schedules. Confirm residual strength and bend-test acceptance after processing.

Format availability is grade-, diameter-, mill- and destination-dependent. Any fabrication plan must preserve the agreed B500C mechanical performance and traceability.

Calculation Basis

Calculate theoretical steel mass from the bar's nominal kg/m, length and number of pieces. Using nominal mass avoids treating the rib-to-rib outside diameter as a smooth round bar.

Total MT = nominal kg/m × length (m) × quantity ÷ 1,000

For Ø20 mm rebar at 2.466 kg/m, 12 m length and 100 bars, the estimated weight is 2.9592 metric tons (displayed as 2.959 MT).

This is a procurement estimate. Final billed mass may be determined by actual weighed mass, contractual tolerance and agreed basis of sale.

PROCUREMENT FAQ

BS 4449 B500C Rebar Questions

Grade-specific answers for structural procurement, rebar fabrication and distributor purchasing teams.

What is BS 4449 B500C rebar?

It is weldable ribbed reinforcing steel to BS 4449:2005+A3:2016 with 500 MPa characteristic yield strength and ductility class C.

What is the latest BS 4449 standard version?

BS 4449:2005+A3:2016 is listed as current by BSI. Purchase documents should cite the actual agreed version.

What is the main difference between B500C and B500B?

B500C has characteristic Rm/Re at least 1.15 but below 1.35 and Agt at least 7.5%; B500B has Rm/Re at least 1.08 and Agt at least 5.0%. The rib identification also differs.

Does B500C have a fixed minimum tensile strength in MPa?

Its key tensile criterion is the characteristic ratio Rm/Re, evaluated together with characteristic yield and applicable conformity rules. Ask for measured paired tensile/yield results, rather than treating a multiplied nominal value as an individual-test guarantee.

What is the B500C yield strength limit?

The characteristic yield strength is 500 MPa and the standard identifies an absolute upper limit of 650 MPa. Exact acceptance must follow the contractual BS 4449 provisions.

Why does B500C have an upper strength-ratio limit?

Class C controls both the lower and upper characteristic tensile-to-yield ratio. This is part of the standard ductility classification and should be verified on the relevant test documentation.

What sizes can be quoted for B500C rebar?

Common metric nominal diameters include Ø6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40 and 50 mm, but the producing mill, grade and supply form must be confirmed per order.

What is the nominal weight of 20 mm B500C rebar?

Approximately 2.466 kg per metre. A 12 m straight bar weighs about 29.592 kg, so 100 such bars are about 2.9592 metric tons on a nominal basis.

How is B500C identified by its ribs?

Within each rib series, B500C has alternating higher and lower transverse-rib inclinations. Check the actual bar marking together with producer and mill records.

Can B500C be supplied in coils?

BS 4449 covers bars, coils and decoiled product. Whether a specific B500C size is supplied in coil form depends on the actual mill and process route.

Does B500C automatically have UK CARES certification?

No. Any third-party approval, CARES scope or EN 10204 certificate must be checked for the exact producer, grade, product and consignment before stating it is available.

How should buyers request a B500C quotation?

Provide BS 4449:2005+A3:2016, class B500C, diameters, straight or coil form, lengths, volume, any BS 8666 schedule, documents, destination and agreed delivery terms.
