PRODUCT OVERVIEW

316L Stainless Steel Wire for Industrial Conversion

Low-carbon, Mo-bearing stainless chemistry and condition-specific manufacturing requirements for wire buyers.

What Is 316L Stainless Steel Wire?

Type 316L (UNS S31603) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel alloyed with chromium, nickel and molybdenum. In wire form, the material is used for specified corrosion-resistant mesh, formed components and industrial wire applications. Its 2–3% molybdenum content can improve resistance to localized corrosion relative to Type 304 under appropriate service conditions.

  • Alloy: Cr 16–18%, Ni 10–14%, Mo 2–3% and C ≤0.03% under the referenced UNS wire chemistry.
  • Order form: finished coiled stainless wire; spool or reel packing is a separate commercial requirement.
  • Wire condition: annealed/Condition A or cold worked/Condition B, according to the specified tensile performance.
  • End uses: filtration mesh, formed industrial wire, ties, screens and qualified processing applications.
Material selection: 316L offers advantages over 304 in selected chloride-bearing environments, but is not immune to pitting, crevice corrosion or seawater damage. Specify chemical exposure, temperature and design requirements.

Theory uses a solid round wire cross-section and reference Type 316L density of 8.00 g/cm³. Actual delivered mass depends on finished tolerance and packaging.

Why wire weight matters: for thin-gauge wire, order length can reach thousands of metres per coil. Use calculated running mass to estimate consumption, then confirm the supplier’s net spool or coil weights.

APPLICABLE STANDARDS

ASTM A580, A555, A313 and A478: Select the Right Scope

Separate general wire supply from specific spring-wire, weaving-wire and straight bar product standards.

Wire Standards by End Use

On smaller screens, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.

StandardIntended relevance
ASTM A580/A580M-23General stainless steel wire, including round and certain shaped wire in coils.
ASTM A555/A555M-23General delivery requirements for stainless steel wire and wire rod; the specific material standard takes priority.
ASTM A313/A313M-18(2025)Stainless spring wire; use when the actual application calls for spring-wire requirements.
ASTM A478-97(2019)Chromium-nickel weaving and knitting stainless steel round wire.
ASTM A276/A276M-25Stainless steel bars and shapes; separate from coiled wire supply.

How to Write a Clear Specification

For general-purpose 316L wire, order by ASTM A580 grade and condition. Do not substitute plate or bar tensile properties for finished wire acceptance.

  • Start with Type 316L / UNS S31603 and the target application.
  • Name ASTM A580/A580M edition for general-purpose wire supply.
  • Add diameter, tolerance, cross-section and surface condition.
  • Agree required tensile range, inspection plan and spool/coil configuration.
  • For weaving or spring products, agree the specific wire standard and certification package.
Hierarchy: where referenced ASTM general requirements and material requirements conflict, apply the specific material standard first.
COMPOSITION

Reference AISI/UNS chemistry for Type 316L stainless wire. EN 1.4404 has its own specification limits; the agreed ASTM/EN edition and actual mill heat analysis govern acceptance.

Why Molybdenum and Low Carbon Matter

316L combines an austenitic Cr–Ni base with molybdenum for better localized corrosion resistance in many environments than 304. Low carbon reduces the risk of weld-related chromium carbide sensitization, while finish and conditions of exposure still matter.

  • Cr 16–18%: supports the passive chromium-oxide protective film.
  • Ni 10–14%: supports austenitic stability and practical wire formability.
  • Mo 2–3%: adds resistance to pitting in selected chloride-containing environments.
  • C ≤0.03%: low-carbon control relevant to welded products and sensitization resistance.
  • Traceability: request the measured Cr, Ni, Mo and C values on the mill report.
316L is not automatically suitable for prolonged seawater immersion, concentrated chloride solutions, or all chemical exposures. Final grade selection requires review of temperature, crevices, cleaning agents and design life.
STRENGTH & DUCTILITY

316L Stainless Steel Wire: Annealed vs Cold Worked

Specify the finished-wire diameter, condition and mechanical acceptance rather than quoting a generic 316L strength value.

Properties Depend on Finished Temper

On smaller screens, swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.

Delivered conditionWhat to specify
Annealed / Condition AAnnealed as a final heat treatment, potentially followed by a light finishing draw; suited to qualified soft forming requirements.
Cold-worked / Condition BCold drawing raises strength and changes ductility. Confirm diameter-specific tensile range and test acceptance.
Special weaving-wire conditionAgree the applicable dedicated weaving-wire specification where required and confirm 316L grade applicability.
Special spring-wire enquiryConfirm grade eligibility under ASTM A313/A313M, spring tensile range and fatigue/coil test requirements; 316L general-use wire is not automatically spring wire.

ASTM A580/A580M classifications identify manufacturing/heat treatment conditions. Specific tensile, yield and elongation acceptance depends on the contracted edition, finish and wire size.

Wire Testing Questions

  • Will the wire be woven, welded, twisted, formed or drawn again?
  • What wire diameter and tolerance are required at the point of use?
  • Which Rm range, elongation, bend test or formability trial is specified?
  • Is the environmental exposure chloride-bearing, chemical, wet or warm?
  • Does the customer need material samples and coil-level test traceability?
Correct comparison: material properties for annealed 316L plate or bar, and those for specially hardened spring wire, are not universal mechanical guarantees for finished 316L wire.
SURFACE & TOLERANCE

Bright, Cold-Drawn and Annealed Wire Surface Options

Industrial wire surface and dimensional tolerances should match the buyer’s processing route.

SURFACE QUALITY

Surface Finish and Diameter Control

Fine wire surfaces affect downstream weaving, forming and appearance. Confirm processing lubricants, handling marks, scratches and tolerance before order confirmation.

  • Cold-drawn finish: may retain process lubricant unless cleaning is specified.
  • Special bright finish: agree cleaning and brightness expectations with the producing mill.
  • Annealed and pickled: may show a dull matte appearance.
  • Dimensional control: specify diameter tolerance, roundness and inspection method.
  • Cleanliness: confirm whether special residue limits are required for downstream applications.

These are ASTM/UNS grade chemistry comparisons; verify the selected material standard and actual test results. Both wire grades need condition-specific mechanical requirements.

Which Stainless Wire Should You Specify?

Choose 316L where the engineering specification calls for a molybdenum-bearing grade, improved pitting resistance in an evaluated environment, or low-carbon material control. Type 304 may be cost-effective for less aggressive conditions.

  • Document actual chloride level, cleaning chemicals, temperature and service life.
  • Compare 316L and 304 quotes with the same wire diameter, temper and packing.
  • Specify chemical limits, wire surface and required tensile range independently.
  • Conduct service or fabrication testing where performance is critical.

The reference wire chemistry includes Cr 16–18%, Ni 10–14%, Mo 2–3% and C ≤0.03%, subject to the agreed material specification.

Is 316L wire suitable for marine environments?

It can outperform 304 against pitting in many environments but is not automatically suitable for seawater immersion, concentrated chlorides or crevice-prone assemblies. Confirm service conditions with an engineer.

Can 316L wire be supplied soft or cold worked?

Annealed/Condition A and cold-worked/Condition B are distinct order conditions. Exact tensile behavior depends on finished diameter, reduction and the applicable specification.

Can 316L wire be used for woven mesh?

It can be used as feedstock for suitable woven mesh products when wire gauge, tensile condition, surface and the applicable weaving-wire requirements are agreed.

Is 316L wire a spring wire?

Not automatically. If spring use is required, confirm material-grade applicability under ASTM A313/A313M and specify the needed tensile and coil-test requirements.

Which diameters are available?

The page lists an indicative inquiry range of 0.20–6.00 mm. Actual production/stock, tolerance, condition and coil weight are confirmed for each RFQ.

How do I calculate 316L wire weight?

For solid round wire and a reference density of 8.00 g/cm³, kg per metre is approximately 0.006283 × diameter(mm)². Net delivery mass depends on actual gauge and weighing.

Can you provide MTC and inspection reports?

Request the material certificate format, heat analysis including Mo, mechanical tests and dimensions. The documents available are verified for the actual producing mill and shipment.
