What Makes 17-4PH Different?

Copper-containing precipitates strengthen the martensitic structure during the specified aging cycle. The selected heat treatment establishes the tensile and yield properties used for your component.

Material acceptance: These limits refer to the ASTM Type 630 specification. Your agreed edition, heat number and mill test certificate establish the chemical analysis for the supplied bars.
Martensitic alloy

Heat traceability

Specify certificate and test-report requirements with the RFQ.

HEAT TREATMENT / STRENGTH

17-4PH Bar Mechanical Properties by Aging Condition

H900, H1025 and H1150 deliver different strength and ductility combinations. Order the condition named in your component specification.

ConditionMinimum TensileMinimum 0.2% YieldElongation, Min.
H9001310 MPa1170 MPa10%
H10251070 MPa1000 MPa12%
H1150930 MPa725 MPa16%

Specify the Aging Condition

H900Higher-strength aged condition
H1025Intermediate strength and ductility selection
H1150Lower strength with increased ductility versus H900

Heat-treatment availability and final properties are confirmed for the ordered size and test orientation.

The minimum properties shown are reference values for applicable Type 630 bar sizes up to approximately 75 mm (3 in.), longitudinal test direction. Diameter, section size, specimen requirements and the contractual ASTM edition govern acceptance. Condition A is a solution-treated supply condition with properties established separately.

GRADE SELECTION

17-4PH vs 304 vs 316L Stainless Steel Bar

Compare the material families by your mechanical strength target, corrosion exposure and delivery condition.

17-4PH / Type 630

Precipitation-hardening stainless steel for high-strength shafts, fasteners and precision mechanical components. Strength is selected through an aging condition.

  • Martensitic, magnetic stainless steel
  • Condition A and specified age-hardened conditions
  • Grade requirement: ASTM A564/A564M

304 & 316L Austenitic Bars

Choose austenitic stainless bars when the application specification prioritizes their corrosion behaviour and fabrication properties.

Grade selection and any substitution follow your approved drawings, design requirements and service environment.

PURCHASING QUESTIONS

17-4PH Stainless Steel Bar FAQ

Which ASTM standard covers 17-4PH stainless bar?

ASTM A564/A564M covers Type 630 / UNS S17400 age-hardening stainless steel bars and shapes. Include the required edition and condition in your RFQ.

How do Condition A and H900 differ?

Condition A is solution-treated stock suitable for subsequent machining and aging. H900 is a high-strength aged condition with reference strength requirements linked to the material size and testing direction.

How do I select H1025 or H1150?

Choose the condition in your approved part specification. H1025 provides an intermediate strength level, while H1150 provides greater reference elongation relative to H900.
