PRODUCT OVERVIEW

HRB400 Hot-Rolled Ribbed Steel Rebar

A reinforcement grade designed around a specified 400 MPa minimum yield strength, ribbed surface geometry and testable supply specifications.

What Is HRB400 Steel Rebar?

HRB400 is a hot-rolled, ribbed steel reinforcing bar grade under GB 1499.2-2024. The surface deformations provide mechanical interlock with concrete, while mechanical properties are verified by specified tensile, ductility and bend tests. The nominal bar diameter is the designation used for weight calculation, rather than the outermost rib-to-rib dimension.

For current projects, specify GB 1499.2-2024 explicitly. This compulsory Chinese national standard took effect on 25 September 2024 and replaced GB/T 1499.2-2018.

Order the Exact Rebar Grade

HRB400 and HRB400E share the 400 MPa minimum yield-strength grade designation, but the E grade includes additional seismic-related ductility and strength-ratio controls. Use HRB400 only where permitted by the project specification and structural design.

How to Specify Your Order

  • State HRB400 and GB 1499.2-2024 rather than simply “Grade 400.”
  • List every diameter in millimetres and its required quantity.
  • Provide straight-bar lengths or confirm whether coils are acceptable.
  • Identify third-party inspection, bending, fatigue or additional project testing.
  • Confirm shipping destination, Incoterms, marking and packing instructions.
Specified requirements must follow the project design and the applicable local construction code. An equivalence between GB and ASTM grades is not assumed.

The theoretical weights follow the GB 1499.2-2024 nominal-mass series based on a reference density of 7.85 g/cm³. *12 m values are arithmetic estimates, not a stock-length commitment. Actual mass, tolerances and quantity acceptance follow the signed order and applicable standard.

HEAT ANALYSIS

HRB400 Chemical Composition & Carbon Equivalent

GB 1499.2-2024 sets chemical composition and carbon-equivalent limits for the relevant grade group.

Element / measureMaximum (mass %)
Carbon (C)0.25
Silicon (Si)0.80
Manganese (Mn)1.60
Phosphorus (P)0.045
Sulfur (S)0.045
Carbon equivalent (Ceq)0.54

These are heat-analysis maxima for the HRB400 grade group. Permissible product-analysis deviations and any special purchaser limits follow the specified standard and contract.

Why Chemistry Data Matters

Heat analysis helps confirm the specified grade and can be relevant when reinforcing bars are to be welded or connected by a qualified process. Elemental limits and carbon equivalent are part of the product standard, while permissible construction welding procedures are governed by project engineering and applicable connection requirements.

The standard expresses carbon equivalent as Ceq = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + V + Mo)/5 + (Cu + Ni)/15, using percentage mass fractions.

  • Request a heat-specific chemical analysis or MTC.
  • Confirm welding and mechanical-splice requirements independently.
  • Include any additional site, inspection or engineering limits with the purchase order.
RIB GEOMETRY & TESTS

Bend Requirements, Deformations & Mill Markings

Confirm actual ribbed bar identity and batch quality using specified bend tests, rolling marks and traceable paperwork.

180° Bend Test Reference

Nominal sizeHRB400 bend mandrel D
Ø6–25 mm4d
Ø28–40 mm5d
Ø>40–50 mm6d

Here d is nominal bar diameter. The cited standard requires no cracks at the bend surface after the specified 180° test. These are laboratory test mandrels—not site fabrication bend schedules.

Bar Identity, Rib Profile & Marking

HRB400 is represented by “4” in the standard surface-grade mark; the E designation is represented differently as “4E”. The complete rolled marking also includes producer identification and nominal diameter in accordance with GB 1499.2-2024.

PLANNING TONNAGE

HRB400 Rebar Weight Calculator

Estimate bar mass by nominal GB rebar diameter, per-bar length and number of pieces. Useful for bulk enquiries and shipment planning.

Enter Your Bar Schedule

2.964 MTEstimated total theoretical weight
29.640 kgEstimated weight per bar
100 barsNumber of pieces entered

How the Calculation Works

The tool uses the nominal mass-per-metre table in GB 1499.2-2024 rather than measuring a rib-to-rib outside diameter and applying a smooth round-bar formula.

Total MT = nominal kg/m × bar length (m) × quantity ÷ 1,000

Example: Ø20 mm has a nominal mass of 2.47 kg/m. For 12 m bars and 100 pieces, the theoretical total is 2.964 metric tons.

Calculated mass is an estimate for quotation planning. The actual contracted weight, accepted mass tolerance, bundle count, cutting loss and loading plan are determined separately.

BUYER FAQ

HRB400 Steel Rebar Questions

Practical guidance for building-material distributors, civil contractors and reinforcement fabricators.

What does HRB400 mean?

HRB400 designates a hot-rolled ribbed steel reinforcing bar with a specified minimum lower yield strength of 400 MPa under GB 1499.2-2024.

Which standard currently applies to HRB400 rebar?

GB 1499.2-2024 is the current Chinese national standard for hot-rolled ribbed steel bars. It became effective on 25 September 2024 and replaced GB/T 1499.2-2018.

What is the difference between HRB400 and HRB400E?

Both have a 400 MPa minimum yield designation, but HRB400E includes extra E-grade requirements such as Agt ≥9%, specified actual strength ratios and reverse-bend testing. Use the grade required by the structural designer.

What are the typical HRB400 bar diameters?

The standard lists nominal diameters from 6 to 50 mm, with individual diameter availability confirmed by supplier. Common diameter enquiries include 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm.

How much does Ø20 mm HRB400 steel rebar weigh?

The nominal theoretical mass is 2.47 kg per metre. One 12-metre length is approximately 29.64 kg, and 100 such lengths have a theoretical mass of 2.964 metric tons.

Does ribbed steel have the same outer diameter as its nominal diameter?

No. Nominal diameter represents a specified equivalent cross-sectional area and mass. Transverse ribs project beyond the bar core; use the standard nominal-mass table for purchasing and weight estimates.

Can HRB400 steel rebar be welded or mechanically coupled?

Use approved welding or mechanical-connection methods and observe the project’s design and relevant connection standards. Grade identity alone does not establish connection suitability.

What documentation can be requested for a batch?

Request a heat or lot-specific mill test certificate, chemical-analysis results, tensile and elongation reports, bend-test compliance and material-identification records according to the purchase agreement.

Can I order fixed lengths and export bundles?

Ask for your target lengths, bundle format, diameter-by-diameter quantities and delivery destination. Cutting, supply form, availability and export loading are confirmed against each order.

What information should a bulk rebar RFQ include?

Send HRB400 / GB 1499.2-2024, each bar diameter, length, quantity or tonnage, inspection and MTC requirements, port or delivery address, trade terms and required schedule.
