PRODUCT OVERVIEW

What Is HRB500 Steel Rebar?

A hot-rolled ribbed reinforcement grade defined by its 500 MPa specified lower yield strength and GB 1499.2-2024 acceptance requirements.

500 MPa Hot-Rolled Ribbed Reinforcement

HRB500 is a hot-rolled ribbed reinforcing steel bar with a specified minimum lower yield strength of 500 MPa and minimum tensile strength of 630 MPa. It is intended for reinforced-concrete applications where this exact grade is permitted by the approved structural design. The ribs provide mechanical interlock with concrete, while nominal cross-sectional area and mass are determined by the standard bar designation.

Applicable standard: GB 1499.2-2024 is the current mandatory national standard, effective 25 September 2024 and replacing GB/T 1499.2-2018. The project design and governing building code determine where HRB500 may be used.

HRB500 and HRB500E Are Different Grades

The HRB500E E-designation adds specified measured-strength ratios, higher total elongation at maximum force and reverse-bend testing. Order ordinary HRB500 only where the project accepts it; confirm the precise grade on the drawings, purchase order and mill certificate.

What Buyers Should Specify

  • Grade HRB500 to GB 1499.2-2024 with no unapproved grade substitution.
  • Bar diameters, lengths and total tonnage or piece counts for each size.
  • Straight bars or eligible coils, bundle mass, marking and loading preferences.
  • Required batch-level tensile, chemical, bend and mass/geometry checks.
  • Shipment location, trade terms, inspection documents and delivery schedule.
Specification boundary: HRB500 is not equivalent to HRB500E, HRBF500, ASTM A615 or ASTM A706 simply because the strength designation appears similar. Confirm substitutions with the project engineer.

CHEMISTRY & CARBON EQUIVALENT

HRB500 Chemical Composition Limits

GB 1499.2-2024 includes heat-analysis maxima for HRB500 and the corresponding carbon-equivalent calculation.

Heat Analysis Maximums

Element / criterionMaximum value
Carbon (C)≤0.25%
Silicon (Si)≤0.80%
Manganese (Mn)≤1.60%
Phosphorus (P)≤0.045%
Sulfur (S)≤0.045%
Carbon equivalent (Ceq)≤0.55%

Values above are the GB 1499.2-2024 heat-analysis limits for the HRB500 grade group. Actual chemistry is recorded for the relevant heat; permissible product-analysis deviations are governed by the standard.

Carbon Equivalent & Connections

Carbon equivalent provides a compositional input when assessing welding requirements. Engineering welding procedures, bar size, joint type and project codes must also be considered.

Ceq = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+V+Mo)/5 + (Cu+Ni)/15
  • Request heat-specific chemical results and Ceq on the agreed mill certificate.
  • The grade permits suitable alloying additions such as V, Nb or Ti within applicable acceptance requirements.
  • Welding and mechanical connection procedures should comply with project requirements and applicable JGJ 18 / JGJ 107 provisions.
  • HRB500 ordinary grade does not imply seismic E-grade certification.

BENDING & GRADE IDENTIFICATION

180° Bend Tests, Rib Geometry & HRB500 Marking

Bending verification and correctly rolled identifiers help purchasing and receiving teams confirm the ordered grade.

HRB500 180° Bend Test

Nominal diameterBend mandrel diameter D
Ø6–25 mm6d
Ø28–40 mm7d
Ø>40–50 mm8d

Here d is the nominal rebar diameter; a standard test specimen is bent through 180° using the specified mandrel and checked for cracking on the bent surface.

For ordinary HRB500, the E-grade reverse-bend requirement is not automatically imposed. HRB500E requires separate reverse-bend testing; its mandrel diameter is one nominal bar diameter greater than the corresponding bend-test mandrel.

Rolled Identification & Surface Inspection

  • Rolled grade mark 5 identifies HRB500; grade 5E identifies HRB500E.
  • Check the producer mark or identification and the nominal diameter on the bar.
  • Verify transverse rib geometry, dimensions, theoretical-mass deviations and surface condition.
  • Record heat or lot references and connect receiving records with the certificate.
  • If bridge or railway fatigue performance is specified, confirm diameter-specific fatigue report requirements.

Enter Your Bar Schedule

2.964 MTEstimated total theoretical weight
29.640 kgEstimated weight per bar
100 barsNumber of pieces entered

How the Calculation Works

The tool uses the nominal mass-per-metre table in GB 1499.2-2024 rather than measuring a rib-to-rib outside diameter and applying a smooth round-bar formula.

Total MT = nominal kg/m × bar length (m) × quantity ÷ 1,000

Example: Ø20 mm has a nominal mass of 2.47 kg/m. For 12 m bars and 100 pieces, the theoretical total is 2.964 metric tons.

Calculated mass is an estimate for quotation planning. The actual contracted weight, accepted mass tolerance, bundle count, cutting loss and loading plan are determined separately.

BUYER FAQ

HRB500 Steel Rebar Questions

Reference answers for civil contractors, reinforcement fabricators and bulk steel purchasing teams.

What is HRB500 steel rebar?

HRB500 is a hot-rolled ribbed steel reinforcement grade under GB 1499.2-2024 with minimum specified lower yield strength 500 MPa and tensile strength 630 MPa.

Which GB standard applies to HRB500 rebar in 2026?

GB 1499.2-2024 is the current mandatory standard for hot-rolled ribbed concrete reinforcing bars. It replaced GB/T 1499.2-2018 on 25 September 2024.

What is the difference between HRB500 and HRB500E?

Both grades have minimum specified yield 500 MPa and tensile 630 MPa. HRB500E adds E-grade actual strength-ratio controls, Agt at least 9%, reverse-bend testing and rolled marking 5E. HRB500 is marked 5.

What elongation is required for HRB500 rebar?

The base requirement is elongation after fracture A at least 15% and total elongation at maximum force Agt at least 7.5%. For A at Ø28–40 mm, a one-point reduction is permitted, and for Ø>40–50 mm a two-point reduction is permitted.

How is HRB500 bend performance checked?

The 180-degree bend mandrel reference is 6d for Ø6–25 mm, 7d for Ø28–40 mm and 8d for Ø>40–50 mm, where d is nominal diameter. The test bend surface must remain free from cracks.

What diameter range is covered by the standard?

GB 1499.2-2024 covers nominal diameters from Ø6 to Ø50 mm. Supply, straight bar length, coils in eligible sizes and project tonnage must be checked for each order.

How much does 20 mm HRB500 rebar weigh?

The standard nominal mass for Ø20 mm is 2.47 kg/m. A 12 m bar is 29.64 kg, and 100 pieces have a nominal theoretical total of 2.964 metric tons.

What are the chemical composition limits for HRB500?

Typical GB 1499.2-2024 heat-analysis maxima for the grade group include C 0.25%, Si 0.80%, Mn 1.60%, P 0.045%, S 0.045% and carbon equivalent Ceq 0.55%.

Can HRB500 rebar be welded or mechanically coupled?

Use the approved project procedure and applicable joint acceptance standards such as JGJ 18 and JGJ 107. Carbon equivalent and the proposed joint and bar size are part of the engineering review.

What should be included in a bulk HRB500 enquiry?

Specify HRB500 to GB 1499.2-2024, nominal diameters, lengths, quantity or weight, inspection and MTC requirements, delivery destination, commercial terms and schedule.
