HIGH-STRENGTH E-GRADE

What Is HRB500E Steel Rebar?

HRB500E combines the 500 MPa specified yield-strength class with additional measured ductility, strength-ratio and reverse-bend controls.

500 MPa Seismic-Grade Ribbed Reinforcement

HRB500E is a hot-rolled ribbed reinforcing bar defined in GB 1499.2-2024. The specified lower yield strength is at least 500 MPa and tensile strength at least 630 MPa. The E suffix identifies added acceptance criteria based on measured strength ratios, total elongation at maximum force and reverse-bend testing.

Current standard: GB 1499.2-2024 took effect on 25 September 2024 and replaced GB/T 1499.2-2018. Use in seismic or other structural elements is subject to the approved design and applicable project code.

Three Measured Values Buyers Should Check

HRB500E is not simply ordinary HRB500 with a different name. Confirm that the mill test data demonstrate the actual strength-ratio and elongation criteria in addition to the 500/630 MPa minimum strengths.

≥1.25Actual tensile strength ÷ actual yield strength
≤1.30Actual yield strength ÷ 500 MPa

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS

HRB500E Chemical Composition & Carbon Equivalent

The standard specifies heat-analysis ceilings for the HRB500 grade group, and secondary refining for the E-designated 500 grade.

GB 1499.2-2024 Heat-Analysis Maximums

Element / parameterMaximum (mass fraction)
Carbon (C)≤0.25%
Silicon (Si)≤0.80%
Manganese (Mn)≤1.60%
Phosphorus (P)≤0.045%
Sulfur (S)≤0.045%
Carbon equivalent (Ceq)≤0.55%

Limits apply to heat analysis for the HRB500/HRB500E group. Product-analysis deviations, nitrogen limits and permissible microalloying additions follow the standard and the agreed order.

Secondary Refining & Connection Controls

GB 1499.2-2024 specifies secondary refining for HRB500E. Request appropriate grade and heat traceability in the ordered quality documentation; do not assume a particular steelmaking route or furnace arrangement for an individual shipment.

Ceq = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+V+Mo)/5 + (Cu+Ni)/15
  • Confirm measured chemical composition and Ceq for the relevant heat.
  • Check the E-grade tensile ratios, Agt and laboratory bend records separately from chemistry.
  • Welded and mechanical joints must follow approved project procedures and applicable JGJ 18 / JGJ 107 requirements.
BEND TESTING / GRADE IDENTIFICATION

HRB500E Bend, Reverse-Bend & 5E Marking

Diameter-specific laboratory bend and reverse-bend tests, plus rolled identification, form part of grade acceptance.

Lab Bend Mandrels by Nominal Diameter

Nominal diameter180° bend mandrelReverse-bend mandrel
Ø6–25 mm6d7d
Ø28–40 mm7d8d
Ø>40–50 mm8d9d

Here d is the nominal bar diameter. The prescribed 180° bend and E-grade reverse-bend specimens must be free of cracking at the bent surface.

Reverse bend: for E-designated rebar, the reverse-bend mandrel is 1d larger than the matching ordinary bend-test mandrel. These are laboratory criteria, not field fabrication bend radii.

Confirm the Rolled Grade Code 5E

HRB500E must be identifiable by the rolled grade mark 5E, with producer identification and nominal diameter. Compare genuine bar markings, bundle tags, heat/lot references and the supplied MTC.

How the Calculation Works

The tool uses the nominal mass-per-metre table in GB 1499.2-2024 rather than measuring a rib-to-rib outside diameter and applying a smooth round-bar formula.

Total MT = nominal kg/m × bar length (m) × quantity ÷ 1,000

Example: Ø20 mm has a nominal mass of 2.47 kg/m. For 12 m bars and 100 pieces, the theoretical total is 2.964 metric tons.

Calculated mass is an estimate for quotation planning. The actual contracted weight, accepted mass tolerance, bundle count, cutting loss and loading plan are determined separately.

STEELMAKING & HOT ROLLING

BUYER FAQ

HRB500E Steel Rebar Questions

Answers for structural project buyers, rebar fabricators, contractors and overseas steel distributors.

What is HRB500E steel rebar?

HRB500E is a hot-rolled ribbed reinforcing steel grade to GB 1499.2-2024 with a minimum specified yield of 500 MPa, tensile strength of 630 MPa and additional E-grade mechanical and reverse-bend requirements.

Which standard applies to HRB500E in 2026?

GB 1499.2-2024 is the current national standard for hot-rolled ribbed reinforcement. It replaced GB/T 1499.2-2018 when implemented on 25 September 2024.

What does E mean in HRB500E?

The E designates additional seismic-related acceptance controls: actual tensile-to-yield ratio at least 1.25, actual-to-specified yield ratio no more than 1.30, Agt at least 9.0% and reverse-bend testing.

How does HRB500E differ from HRB500?

Both have minimum specified yield 500 MPa and tensile 630 MPa. HRB500E adds measured-ratio checks, 9.0% Agt, reverse-bend testing and 5E grade marking; ordinary HRB500 carries grade mark 5.

Does HRB500E require 15% elongation after fracture?

The 2024 Table 6 lists Agt ≥9.0% for HRB500E and does not list a separate numerical A minimum for the E grade. A and Agt are different test measurements; factory inspection and arbitration follow the standard.

What bend and reverse-bend mandrels apply to HRB500E?

For nominal Ø6–25 mm, Ø28–40 mm and Ø>40–50 mm, the 180° bend mandrels are 6d, 7d and 8d, respectively. For E-grade reverse-bend testing they increase to 7d, 8d and 9d.

What does the 5E rolled marking mean?

5E is the rolled grade identifier for HRB500E. The bar should also show the required producer identification and nominal diameter so it can be reconciled with the package tag and certificate.

Which diameters and nominal weights are standard?

GB 1499.2-2024 covers Ø6–50 mm. For example, Ø20 weighs 2.47 kg/m nominally and Ø25 weighs 3.85 kg/m. Availability, lengths and coil eligibility must be confirmed for the order.

What are the carbon equivalent and refining requirements?

The heat-analysis Ceq maximum for the HRB500E group is 0.55%. GB 1499.2-2024 also specifies secondary refining for HRB500E; review the ordered material and grade traceability documents.

What information is required to quote HRB500E?

Send GB 1499.2-2024, grade HRB500E, diameter-by-diameter schedule, cut lengths, weight or piece counts, MTC and inspection requirements, destination, shipment terms and target delivery dates.
