GRADE CHEMISTRY

AH36 Steel Plate Chemical Composition

Review the killed, fine-grain-treated steel composition and request actual heat analysis and weldability data for the material supplied.

ElementIACS Reference Requirement
Carbon (C)≤ 0.18%
Manganese (Mn)0.90–1.60%*
Silicon (Si)≤ 0.50%
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.035%
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.035%
Acid-soluble aluminium (Al)≥ 0.015% where the Al route applies
Copper (Cu)≤ 0.35%
Chromium (Cr)≤ 0.20%
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.40%
Molybdenum (Mo)≤ 0.08%

Fine-Grain Chemistry & Welding Review

The selected steelmaking practice may use aluminium, niobium, vanadium, titanium or an approved combination of grain-refining elements.

  • Fine-grain practice verified through the mill-approved process
  • Carbon equivalent or Pcm supplied where requested
  • Heat-specific chemistry and plate condition documented on the MTC
  • Welding parameters qualified for the actual material and project
For Grade A36/AH36 produced by an approved TMCP route, IACS W11 Table 3 gives maximum carbon equivalent of 0.38% (t ≤ 50 mm) or 0.40% (50 < t ≤ 100 mm). The actual class-approved process and mill heat analysis control acceptance.

*For thickness up to 12.5 mm, the manganese minimum may be reduced to 0.70% under the IACS conditions. Fine-grain elements and chemistry variations follow the applicable class-approved manufacture and delivery route.

When your shipyard specifies high-heat-input welding or through-thickness testing, include the applicable requirements with your order so the approved mill and plate condition can be verified.

ROLLING CONDITION

AH36 Plate Delivery Condition and Rolling Route

For AH36 the approved route depends on plate thickness, grain-refining elements and the producing works approval.

01

As-Rolled — Approved Conditions

Thin-plate routes follow IACS Table 5; above certain thresholds, as-rolled supply requires class permission and satisfactory impact testing.

02

Normalized / Normalizing Rolled

For thicker grade A36 plates the approved mill may supply normalized or normalizing-rolled material under the class rules.

03

TMCP / Thermomechanical Rolling

Order the approved TMCP process where specified, with the associated heat analysis and carbon-equivalent requirements.

04

Shipyard Welding Requirements

Provide any high-heat-input welding, Z-direction or supplementary impact requirements early for mill approval review.

Under IACS Rev.9 Table 5, grade A36 conditions depend on fine-grain treatment and thickness. The approved process, required Charpy tests and manufacturing certification are confirmed for each quoted batch.
