API 5L X52 Line Pipe FAQ
Answers to frequent technical and sourcing questions about X52/L360, PSL2, pipe dimensions, test records and quotations.
What does API 5L X52 / L360 mean?
X52 and L360 identify the widely used minimum-yield class of about 360 MPa under API 5L. Procurement must also identify PSL, manufacturing process, any delivery suffix and acceptance tests.
What is the current API 5L specification edition?
API announced Specification 5L, 47th edition on June 2, 2026. Include the required edition and any project amendments in your purchase order.
What minimum mechanical properties apply to X52?
Common X52 reference minimums are 360 MPa yield and 460 MPa tensile. PSL2 historically also sets upper limits; the ordered specification edition, pipe diameter and test conditions control actual acceptance.
How does X52 PSL1 differ from PSL2?
PSL2 generally has additional grade/delivery designations, chemistry controls, tensile ranges and tougher inspection provisions. State the applicable edition and exact delivery-condition suffix when required.
What are X52N, X52Q and X52M?
These common PSL2 suffixes relate to delivery condition. Their eligibility, chemical composition and manufacturing route must be checked against the contracted edition and approved mill.
Is API 5L X52 seamless or welded pipe?
The standard covers permitted seamless and welded processes. Availability depends on the approved mill, OD, WT, delivery condition and project technical requirements.
Can NPS and SCH 40/80 be used to request X52?
They are useful dimension references, but your material requisition should state the actual outside diameter, specified wall thickness, length, tolerances and quantity.
Does X52 automatically qualify for sour service?
No. Sour-gas suitability requires specific materials engineering, applicable API requirements and any HIC, SSC, toughness or corrosion-service testing requested by the project.
Can X52 be used for CO₂ transmission pipelines?
That depends on fluid composition, design pressure, impurities, moisture, corrosion controls, toughness and project codes. The 47th edition contains CO₂-related updates, but grade alone is not approval for a service.
What inspection documents should I request?
Typically request the MTC, chemistry, tensile results, hydrostatic and NDE reports, dimensional measurements and heat traceability; add impact tests, ITP witness points or special tests as required.
How does the pipe weight calculator work?
It calculates the annulus cross-section from OD and wall thickness using nominal density 7,850 kg/m³, then multiplies by pipe length and count. Coatings, caps and packaging are excluded.
What information should I send for a bulk X52 quote?
Send API edition, PSL, delivery suffix, OD × WT, pipe length and tonnage, manufacturing route, coating, end finish, test plan, MTC requirements, destination and target delivery date.
