API 5L X60 Line Pipe FAQ
Answers to frequent technical and sourcing questions about X60/L415, PSL2, pipe dimensions, test records and quotations.
What does API 5L X60 / L415 designate?
X60 and L415 identify a line-pipe strength class commonly associated with a 415 MPa minimum yield reference. The complete order must also specify API edition, PSL, approved process and any permitted delivery suffix.
Which edition of API 5L is currently published?
The American Petroleum Institute published Spec 5L, 47th edition on June 2, 2026. The agreed project contract and applicable amendments determine the acceptance edition.
What are the minimum yield and tensile references for X60?
Common published values are 415 MPa minimum yield and 520 MPa minimum tensile. Earlier PSL2 X60 tables also contain upper limits. Confirm all acceptance requirements in the ordered specification.
How does X60 PSL1 differ from X60 PSL2?
PSL2 typically requires tighter control of grade / delivery designations, chemistry, strength ranges, toughness, inspection and traceability. The exact differences depend on the contracted edition and pipe dimensions.
What is the difference between X60N, X60Q and X60M?
N, Q and M refer to different delivery conditions in historical PSL2 designations. Their permitted combinations, production processing and toughness provisions are not automatically interchangeable.
Can API 5L X60 be supplied as seamless or welded pipe?
API 5L covers permitted seamless and welded routes. Mill qualification and the applicable grade, PSL, diameter, wall and delivery condition determine available manufacturing options.
Should I specify NPS / Schedule or OD × WT?
Use actual outside diameter and specified wall thickness in the project requisition; NPS and Schedule can be added as familiar reference sizes. Include length, tolerances and piece count.
Does X60 automatically satisfy sour-gas requirements?
Sour-service selection requires a qualified design, specified chemical and hardness limits where relevant, and any HIC, SSC, toughness and corrosion controls required by the service specification.
Can X60 be quoted for CO₂ transmission pipelines?
A CO₂ project requires engineering checks for phase, impurities, water content, fracture propagation, corrosion protection and applicable codes. The 47th edition has CO₂-related updates; grade designation alone is not service approval.
What testing documents should accompany X60?
Specify a heat-traceable MTC, chemical and mechanical test results, hydrostatic and NDE records and dimensional checks. Add impact / DWTT, weld qualification, ITP witnessing and special tests where applicable.
How is the X60 pipe weight estimated?
The calculator uses the hollow-annulus cross-section from nominal OD and wall thickness with steel density 7,850 kg/m³. It excludes external coatings, internal linings, end caps, skids and tolerances.
What information do I need for an X60 factory quotation?
Provide API edition, PSL, grade suffix, OD × WT, pipe lengths, tonnage or piece count, approved mill route, coating, ends, test plan, certification needs and destination.
