02 / MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Chemistry and Strength for ASTM A333 Grade 6

Buy to the Grade 6 material specification, not an unverified substitute based on strength alone.

Grade 6 Mechanical Requirements

PropertyGrade 6 minimum / requirement
Tensile strength, minimum415 MPa (60,000 psi)
Yield strength, minimum240 MPa (35,000 psi)
ElongationDetermine by actual wall thickness, gauge length, specimen type and test orientation under the contracted edition
Mandatory toughnessCharpy V-notch evaluation; see the impact section below
Application conditionSuitable material selection and allowable service temperature depend on the governing piping code

For comparative procurement. Mechanical test results on the MTC determine the delivered heat's compliance. Elongation is wall- and specimen-dependent.

Material qualification: Minimum room-temperature strength does not establish low-temperature fitness on its own. Check Charpy values, heat treatment, design stress, brittle-fracture rules and project-specific requirements together.
03 / LOW-TEMPERATURE TESTING

Charpy Impact Requirements at −45°C

Understand what Grade 6 impact testing proves—and what depends on specimen size and the project design code.

Charpy V-notch evidence matters more than an ambient-strength comparison.

Grade 6 is specified where notch toughness must be checked at low temperatures. Full-size test results alone do not describe every pipe wall: thinner walls may produce sub-size specimens that require different acceptance values and test-temperature adjustments.

  • Standard Grade 6 referenceThe standard nominal impact test temperature is −45°C (−50°F).
  • Charpy specimensState specimen dimensions and testing orientation in the documentation where required.
  • Acceptance criteriaFor full-size 10 × 10 mm specimens, check the three-test average and the lowest individual result.
  • Design verificationThe piping engineer determines actual design minimum metal temperature and code compliance.

Request actual OD and WT if your engineering drawing specifies dimensions rather than NPS and schedule.

NPS, OD and Schedule: what to send

  • NPS is a nominal designation, not the measured outside diameter
  • For a stated NPS, SCH 40 and SCH 80 generally have the same outside diameter but different wall thickness
  • Quote wall thickness and tolerance exactly for cold-service design and impact testing
  • Confirm special dimensions against mill rolling and test capabilities
  • Provide a cutting list for multiple OD / WT combinations
05 / HEAT TREATMENT & FINISH

Heat Treatment, Surface Condition & Pipe Ends

Heat-treatment routes, pipe finishing and end preparation belong in the same procurement specification.

01 / HEAT TREATMENT

Controlled Microstructure

ASTM A333 Grade 6 requires an appropriate specified treatment to control microstructure. Normalizing is a recognized route; the acceptable condition depends on the standard and production method.

02 / SURFACE

Mill Finish & Protection

Request clean mill finish or an agreed protective coating, with caps and lifting protection as appropriate to the shipment.

03 / PIPE ENDS

Plain, Beveled or Prepared

Define weld-preparation dimensions, end squareness, protection and any customer-specific machining requirements.

Heat-treatment evidence: Ask the mill to state the actual treatment and condition on inspection documents. Avoid assuming every Grade 6 pipe was produced by an identical normalizing cycle.
06 / LOW-TEMPERATURE SERVICE

Where ASTM A333 Grade 6 Pipe Fits

Use low-temperature material requirements alongside the project piping code and operating conditions.

Low-temperature industrial process piping and insulated steel pipe installation
ENGINEERING SERVICE CONDITIONS

Designed around low-temperature toughness requirements

ASTM A333 Grade 6 is often selected for process pipework where reduced-temperature notch toughness must be verified. Specify the design minimum metal temperature, nominal size, wall, joint preparation, impact testing and documentation before purchasing material.

  • Reference Grade 6 Charpy test temperature: −45°C
  • Project design temperature is determined by the applicable piping code
  • Thermal stress, support loads and corrosion allowance need design review
  • Check welding procedures, weld metal and heat-affected-zone toughness separately
Design note: A successful −45°C material impact test is a material acceptance result, not an automatic authorization to operate at −45°C in every process or pressure system.

17 / BUYER FAQ

ASTM A333 Grade 6 Seamless Pipe FAQ

Focused answers for purchasing low-temperature seamless pipe to a defined inspection and delivery specification.

What is ASTM A333 Grade 6 seamless steel pipe?

A carbon steel seamless pipe product specified under ASTM A333/A333M for low-temperature service and other uses requiring notch toughness. Seamless is the manufacturing route selected for this page.

What ASTM edition should I specify?

ASTM A333/A333M-24 is the active edition identified by ASTM at the time of this page preparation. State the governing contract edition and confirm whether inch-pound or SI requirements apply.

Is the Grade 6 impact test always performed at −45°C?

−45°C (−50°F) is the standard Grade 6 reference. Thin-wall and sub-size Charpy specimen provisions can require temperature adjustments, so the actual test report and contract requirements control.

What are the standard tensile and yield minima?

The minimum tensile strength is 415 MPa, and the minimum yield strength is 240 MPa. Elongation requirements depend on the prescribed test specimen and pipe wall thickness.

What is the minimum full-size Charpy impact energy?

For a 10 × 10 mm V-notch specimen, a set of three is commonly evaluated against at least 18 J average, with no individual specimen below the applicable 14 J limit. Sub-size rules differ.

Can I use Grade 6 pipe continuously at −45°C?

The Charpy test requirement is a material qualification condition. The project engineer must evaluate minimum design metal temperature, stress, wall, welded joints and the applicable piping or pressure code.

Is A333 Grade 6 identical to A106 Grade B?

No. The materials serve different specified purposes. A333 includes low-temperature toughness requirements; A106 is specified for high-temperature seamless pipe. Substitution needs engineering approval.

Are both SCH 40 and SCH 80 available?

These are commonly referenced dimensional schedules, but A333 Grade 6 availability depends on nominal size, wall thickness, mill capability, inspection scope and delivery window. Confirm each requested combination.

Does the pipe have to be normalized?

ASTM A333 sets requirements for controlling the microstructure and permits specified treatment routes. The actual Grade 6 pipe condition should be confirmed through the ordered edition and mill records.

Which tests and documents should be requested?

Specify chemistry, tensile properties, impact test temperature / Charpy energies, hydrostatic or NDE requirements, heat-treatment record, dimensional checks and the requested MTC format.

How does the pipe weight calculator work?

It estimates bare-steel pipe mass from nominal OD, wall thickness, length and piece count using 7.85 g/cm³ steel density. The result excludes coatings and export packaging and is not a certified shipping weight.

What details should I include for an A333 Grade 6 quotation?

Provide grade and standard edition, NPS or OD, SCH or wall, lengths and quantity, design/impact test requirements, surface and ends, MTC and third-party inspection needs, destination and delivery terms.
