API 5L has two product specification levels. Mill capability, grade suffix, applicable edition and line pipe dimensions must be confirmed for the offered material.
The same Grade B / L245 name can cover different manufacturing, chemical, test and documentation conditions.
Material is ordered against the PSL1 requirements of the chosen API 5L edition. It is commonly specified when the project does not call for the additional PSL2 control framework.
PSL2 introduces more defined controls and may require a specific delivery condition or grade suffix. Impact testing, chemistry, yield-to-tensile relationships and NDE depend on the applicable rules and purchase specification.
Send the pipeline material requisition and any client inspection specification for review before pricing.
These values help identify Grade B; the contractual API edition, PSL and delivery condition determine final acceptance.
| Requirement | Procurement reference |
|---|---|
| Common Grade B / L245 minimum yield reference | 245 MPa (35,500 psi) |
| Common Grade B / L245 minimum tensile reference | 415 MPa (60,200 psi) |
| PSL1 designations | Grade B or L245; tensile/elongation acceptance per the contracted edition |
| PSL2 designations | Often BR / BN / BQ / BM or L245R / L245N / L245Q / L245M; verify allowed condition |
| PSL2 strength limits | Minimum and maximum yield/tensile values depend on edition and test / product conditions |
| Elongation and Y/T ratio | Evaluate with specimen geometry, pipe size and product level; no single universal percentage |
| Toughness and service-specific tests | Request Charpy, HIC, SSC, DWTT and supplementary tests only where applicable |
245 MPa and 415 MPa are widely used Grade B / L245 minimum strength reference values; confirm the exact test requirements in API 5L 47th edition or the ordered earlier edition.
| Element / condition | Illustrative older limit |
|---|---|
| Carbon C, PSL1 SMLS | ≤0.28% — 46th-edition reference only |
| Carbon C, PSL1 welded | ≤0.26% — 46th-edition reference only |
| Manganese Mn, PSL1 | ≤1.20% before prescribed adjustment rules — 46th-edition reference |
| Phosphorus P, PSL1 | ≤0.030% — 46th-edition reference |
| Sulfur S, PSL1 | ≤0.030% — 46th-edition reference |
| PSL2 chemistry | Varies with the selected suffix, process and edition; confirm carbon, manganese, microalloy elements and CE |
| 47th-edition chemistry | Check directly against the licensed current standard and the certified heat analysis |
The chemistry figures above are explicitly identified as 46th-edition PSL1 reference data, not unconditional 47th-edition guarantee values. Final acceptance uses the chosen specification edition and MTC.
Choose the manufacturing method that fits your diameter, wall thickness, inspection plan and project approval list.
Pipe without a longitudinal weld seam. Specify manufacturing process, heat treatment, dimensional tolerances, end preparation and the required inspection record.
Formed pipe using a longitudinal high-frequency weld. Quality requirements include seam treatment, dimensional control and applicable weld-seam examination.
SAW routes may suit larger diameters subject to mill qualification. Confirm weld configuration, pipe geometry, inspection scope and project approval.
Use actual pipe dimensions for ordering. NPS / Schedule examples are a reference where the project uses ASME dimensional terminology.
| Reference size | OD (mm) | SCH 40 WT (mm) | SCH 80 WT (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPS ½ | 21.3 | 2.77 | 3.73 |
| NPS 1 | 33.4 | 3.38 | 4.55 |
| NPS 2 | 60.3 | 3.91 | 5.54 |
| NPS 4 | 114.3 | 6.02 | 8.56 |
| NPS 6 | 168.3 | 7.11 | 10.97 |
| NPS 8 | 219.1 | 8.18 | 12.70 |
NPS and SCH dimensional reference only; verify the applicable pipe dimensional standard and tolerance. For API 5L RFQs, state the specified OD × WT in mm or inches explicitly.

Answers to frequent questions about the latest specification, pipe forms, material documents and line-pipe ordering.
It is line pipe in the L245 / Grade B strength class ordered under API Specification 5L for pipeline transport systems. The purchase must specify PSL, manufacturing route, dimensions and inspection requirements.
API announced the 47th edition on 2 June 2026. Your purchase contract should identify the required edition and any project-specific supplements.
L245 is the metric grade designation associated with Grade B. A common minimum yield strength reference is 245 MPa; evaluate all actual acceptance requirements under the ordered edition and PSL.
The product specification levels define different control and acceptance requirements. PSL2 generally has additional conditions for chemistry, grade/delivery designation, mechanical testing, toughness and inspection. Confirm the edition-specific requirements.
No. API 5L includes both seamless and welded line pipe. Specify SMLS, HFW/ERW, SAW or another approved process according to your project requirements and available mill qualification.
Schedule numbers can describe reference wall thickness for particular NPS sizes. In API 5L purchase documentation, give the actual outside diameter and specified wall thickness, length and dimensional tolerance.
No. These are well-known minimum strength reference values. Actual chemistry, test samples, maximum strength where applicable, toughness and NDE depend on PSL, edition and project specification.
No. Sour-service material selection requires the relevant project specification and applicable annex / testing provisions. HIC, SSC and environmental suitability must be separately evaluated and documented where required.
Suitability depends on pipeline engineering, stream composition, operating conditions and project codes. API 5L 47th edition adds CO₂-related provisions, but Grade B and PSL designation alone do not establish approval for a particular CO₂ service.
Ask for MTC, chemical analysis, tensile results, hydrostatic testing, weld/body NDE, required toughness testing, pipe-marking traceability and any agreed third-party inspection.
