15 / GRADE SELECTION

Compare X70 With Other Pipeline Steel Grades

Compare the common minimum yield strength classes for preliminary ordering. Grade substitution still requires independent pressure design, welding, fracture-control, dimensional and material qualification.

Pipe gradeCommon minimum yield referenceMaterial selection note
API 5L Grade B / L245245 MPaLower minimum yield class for separately engineered line pipe
API 5L X52 / L360360 MPaLower minimum yield reference; approval depends on service specification
API 5L X60 / L415415 MPaLower strength grade; welding and toughness acceptance differ
API 5L X65 / L450450 MPaNext lower line-pipe strength class with distinct qualification
API 5L X70 / L485485 MPaCURRENT GRADE · PSL1 or PSL2; check X70Q / X70M, fracture tests and mill route
ASTM A106 Grade B240 MPaSeamless high-temperature process pipe under another standard
ASTM A333 Grade 6240 MPaLow-temperature seamless pipe with separate impact acceptance
X70 is a higher yield class than X65, but strength is not a stand-in for allowable pressure, verified weldability or fracture arrest performance. Confirm design-wall calculations, seam qualification and line-pipe documentation before changing grade.
17 / BUYER FAQ

API 5L X70 Line Pipe FAQ

Answers to frequent technical and sourcing questions about X70/L485, PSL2, pipe dimensions, test records and quotations.

What does API 5L X70 / L485 mean?

X70 / L485 designates a high-strength line-pipe grade with a commonly published minimum yield reference of 485 MPa. State the API edition, PSL, applicable Q/M suffix and inspection program in the purchase requisition.

Which edition of API 5L is currently published?

API announced the 47th edition of API Specification 5L on June 2, 2026. Your contract and any cited amendments determine the specification used for acceptance.

What strength is specified for X70 line pipe?

Earlier API 5L tables list 485 MPa minimum yield and 570 MPa minimum tensile. Earlier PSL2 X70Q/M tables give 485–635 MPa yield and 570–760 MPa tensile. Confirm all limits against the applicable contract edition.

What is the difference between X70 PSL1 and PSL2?

PSL2 has additional controls over chemistry, delivery state, material properties, toughness, tests and traceability. Your X70 order should identify its PSL plus any applicable special-service annexes and inspection documents.

How are X70Q and X70M different?

In earlier PSL2 designations, Q denotes quenched-and-tempered delivery and M denotes thermomechanically controlled delivery. The actual allowed route, wall thickness, chemical limits and toughness requirements depend on the ordered API edition.

Can X70 be supplied as seamless, HFW or SAW pipe?

The permitted manufacturing route depends on pipe dimensions, grade suffix, PSL and the approved mill. Check process qualification and available diameter / wall range before selecting a route.

Should I give NPS / Schedule or actual OD × WT?

Provide actual outside diameter, specified wall thickness, lengths and quantities. NPS and Schedule are useful reference dimensions; the project pipe schedule and drawings govern production.

Why do X70 projects specify Charpy and DWTT testing?

Charpy assesses notch toughness and DWTT supports fracture-behaviour evaluation under applicable rules. Required test method, temperature, specimen, diameter applicability and acceptance must be specified for your route and edition.

Is X70 suitable for CO₂ or sour-gas transmission?

Suitability needs a documented project assessment for water, impurities, phase conditions, corrosion, HIC/SSC where relevant, fracture control and the design code. The grade designation by itself does not qualify the service.

Which certificates and inspection records should I request?

Request the heat-traceable MTC, product chemistry, pipe-body and weld tests, hydrostatic and NDE records, dimensions and specified Charpy / DWTT reports. Add third-party releases where the contract requires them.

How does the X70 pipe weight calculator work?

It calculates a hollow-annulus steel mass from the entered OD, wall thickness, length, quantity and 7,850 kg/m³ density. Coatings, internal lining, end protection and mill tolerances are outside the estimate.

What details are needed for an X70 price quotation?

Send the API edition, PSL, X70Q/M condition where relevant, OD × wall thickness, lengths, quantities, authorized mill processes, coating, required testing, delivery destination and project timetable.
