02 / PSL1 AND PSL2

Select the Right Product Specification Level

For X52, PSL1 and PSL2 have different control frameworks and may involve different permitted manufacturing and delivery conditions.

PSL1 / GRADE X52

PSL1 X52 / L360

Order the X52 minimum-strength class under the specified API 5L edition, with process, pipe geometry, tensile requirements and inspection expressly identified.

  • Common strength reference: 360 MPa minimum yield, 460 MPa minimum tensile
  • Confirm chemistry and test conditions by edition and manufacturing route
  • Agree pipe length, dimensional tolerance and marking
  • Specify hydrotest, NDE and documents as required
PSL2 / CONTROLLED DELIVERY

X52N / X52Q / X52M

PSL2 grades often carry delivery-condition suffixes. Requirements include additional chemistry, tensile ranges and testing conditions that depend on the edition, pipe size and manufacturing route.

  • Check the edition-specific permitted grade suffix and mill process
  • Historical PSL2 X52 reference: 360–530 MPa yield and 460–760 MPa tensile
  • Review Y/T ratio, toughness, NDE and carbon equivalent provisions
  • Specify any additional sour-service, offshore or CO₂-related conditions
Reference versus guarantee: The PSL2 ranges shown are widely published values from earlier API 5L editions. Confirm the exact limits, sample orientation, diameter conditions and any updates against your ordered edition; X52M, X52N and X52Q are not interchangeable without engineering approval.
03 / X52 / L360 MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Mechanical Strength and Chemical Composition

These tables support early grade comparison. Acceptance is determined by the agreed API edition, PSL and manufacture / delivery condition.

X52M / L360M (historic PSL2 reference)C ≤0.22%; Mn ≤1.40%; Si ≤0.45%
P / S (older PSL2 references)P ≤0.025%; S ≤0.015%
Microalloying additionsV, Nb, Ti subject to process-specific individual / combined limits
Carbon equivalentCEIIW / CEPcm per chemistry, wall and specification; verify calculation
Heat / product chemistryRequire heat and product analyses and MTC matching your purchase order

Do not treat these values as guaranteed chemistry for every X52 pipe. Actual maximum levels, footnotes and carbon equivalent requirements vary by specification edition, PSL, thickness and processing route.

Why specify carbon equivalent? Welding performance is influenced by C, Mn and alloying chemistry. Project WPS/PQR qualification, heat input, wall thickness and service environment are independent engineering requirements.
04 / AVAILABLE PIPE MANUFACTURING ROUTES

Seamless, HFW/ERW and SAW X52 Line Pipe

Manufacturing process affects pipe size availability, weld inspection, delivery condition and pipe-mill qualification.

01 / SMLS

Seamless X52 Pipe

Without a longitudinal weld seam. Confirm that the approved pipe mill can supply the specified X52 grade, pipe dimensions and heat-treated condition, together with required body inspection.

NPS 260.33.915.54
NPS 4114.36.028.56
NPS 6168.37.1110.97
NPS 8219.18.1812.70

Confirm every line item

  • Actual outside diameter and specified wall thickness
  • Length and end preparation / bevel angle
  • PSL1/PSL2, required delivery condition and mill route
  • Pipe straightness, ovality and dimensional tolerances
  • External coating or mill-finish condition
  • Pipe weight basis, handling and bundle configuration

The schedule table is a dimensional aid and does not establish availability, allowable pressure, or project suitability.

Engineering design must verify pressure rating, code compliance, wall allowance, weld efficiency and environmental loading. Nominal Schedule numbers alone are not a substitute for engineering calculations.

08 / PIPE WEIGHT CALCULATOR

Calculate X52 Line Pipe Weight and Tonnage

Estimate bare-steel line-pipe mass using specified OD, wall thickness, pipe length and piece count. Schedule presets are included as dimensional references.

Pipe Size and Quantity

Calculation uses a nominal steel density of 7,850 kg/m³ and the annular pipe cross-section. The result excludes coatings, couplings, end caps, seawater contents and shipping materials.

Estimated Pipe Weight

Total net pipe weight9.645 MTFor the entered dimensions and number of pipes
16.075 kg/m — theoretical mass per metre
96.45 kg — one pipe
102.26 mm — calculated inside diameter
600.0 m — total pipe length

Nominal bare-steel estimate; confirm actual net weight and mill tolerances.

Weight formula: kg/m = π × (OD − WT) × WT × 0.00785, with OD and WT in mm. Final supply mass depends on measured dimensions and agreed weighing method.
09 / X52 MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Mill Production, Pipe Identification and Traceability

Consistent grade control comes from the approved process, documented welding / heat treatment and traceability for every accepted pipe lot.

  • Review the X52 steel chemistry and selected mill production route

17 / BUYER FAQ

API 5L X52 Line Pipe FAQ

Answers to frequent technical and sourcing questions about X52/L360, PSL2, pipe dimensions, test records and quotations.

What does API 5L X52 / L360 mean?

X52 and L360 identify the widely used minimum-yield class of about 360 MPa under API 5L. Procurement must also identify PSL, manufacturing process, any delivery suffix and acceptance tests.

What is the current API 5L specification edition?

API announced Specification 5L, 47th edition on June 2, 2026. Include the required edition and any project amendments in your purchase order.

What minimum mechanical properties apply to X52?

Common X52 reference minimums are 360 MPa yield and 460 MPa tensile. PSL2 historically also sets upper limits; the ordered specification edition, pipe diameter and test conditions control actual acceptance.

How does X52 PSL1 differ from PSL2?

PSL2 generally has additional grade/delivery designations, chemistry controls, tensile ranges and tougher inspection provisions. State the applicable edition and exact delivery-condition suffix when required.

What are X52N, X52Q and X52M?

These common PSL2 suffixes relate to delivery condition. Their eligibility, chemical composition and manufacturing route must be checked against the contracted edition and approved mill.

Is API 5L X52 seamless or welded pipe?

The standard covers permitted seamless and welded processes. Availability depends on the approved mill, OD, WT, delivery condition and project technical requirements.

Can NPS and SCH 40/80 be used to request X52?

They are useful dimension references, but your material requisition should state the actual outside diameter, specified wall thickness, length, tolerances and quantity.

Does X52 automatically qualify for sour service?

No. Sour-gas suitability requires specific materials engineering, applicable API requirements and any HIC, SSC, toughness or corrosion-service testing requested by the project.

Can X52 be used for CO₂ transmission pipelines?

That depends on fluid composition, design pressure, impurities, moisture, corrosion controls, toughness and project codes. The 47th edition contains CO₂-related updates, but grade alone is not approval for a service.

What inspection documents should I request?

Typically request the MTC, chemistry, tensile results, hydrostatic and NDE reports, dimensional measurements and heat traceability; add impact tests, ITP witness points or special tests as required.

How does the pipe weight calculator work?

It calculates the annulus cross-section from OD and wall thickness using nominal density 7,850 kg/m³, then multiplies by pipe length and count. Coatings, caps and packaging are excluded.

What information should I send for a bulk X52 quote?

Send API edition, PSL, delivery suffix, OD × WT, pipe length and tonnage, manufacturing route, coating, end finish, test plan, MTC requirements, destination and target delivery date.
