For steel strip and sheets, SAE J403 chemistry is commonly specified with carbon at 0.08% maximum and manganese at 0.45% maximum. Request the actual lot analysis and any tighter welding or forming limits your drawing calls for.
SAE J403 is a chemical-composition designation. Strength, elongation and forming acceptance are established through the separately agreed hot-rolled product grade and test requirements.
Low-carbon chemistry supports processing-oriented selection, subject to the actual ordered material condition.
Set yield, tensile, elongation and any bend requirements in the purchase specification.
Confirm the forming route, final geometry, test direction and any required trial or sample approval.
| Property | How to state the requirement | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|
| Yield / proof strength | Specify minimum, maximum or target range as required for your process | Confirmed by an agreed tensile test and actual MTC |
| Tensile strength | Set a suitable tensile acceptance range when needed | Depends on product condition, hot-rolling history and specification |
| Elongation | Define minimum elongation, gauge length and orientation | Test coupon / reference length matters for forming approval |
| Bend performance | Agree bend angle, inside radius and orientation | Use a test requirement consistent with the finished part |
| Formability or drawing | Confirm application-specific performance criteria | Trial samples and coil-to-coil consistency can be important |
Share your part drawing, target strength, elongation and bend requirements for a specification-based quotation.
Choose the surface condition that suits your downstream line. Surface acceptance and edge tolerances should be included in the order rather than inferred from the chemistry grade.

SAE 1006 chemistry is commonly chosen for processing routes that benefit from low carbon content. Confirm the finished-part mechanical and surface requirements for each application.
Master coils can be decoiled and cut into blanks for subsequent forming or fabrication, subject to tested material condition.
Suitable chemical and strip dimensions can support welded tube production when the welding procedure and end-use standard are met.
Convert master coil into narrower strip or blanks to the width, edge and handling tolerance you need.
Review material elongation, profile complexity and coil consistency before running roll-forming dies.
Specify strip gauge, burr limits, chemistry and mechanical characteristics for welding and forming.
Use hot-rolled feedstock for further cold processing with the required surface preparation and material route.
Specify blank dimensions and required forming performance for low-carbon fabricated parts.
Request pickled or otherwise prepared material when an additional finish is part of the production route.
Estimate running-meter mass, nominal strip length per coil and total tonnage for handling and procurement planning. Values use a nominal carbon-steel density of 7.85 g/cm³.
Inputs are nominal dimensions and net mass. Replace them with the dimensions and coil weights from your actual order.
Reference formula: kg/m = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00785. Coil length = coil net kg ÷ kg/m.
Actual strip length depends on measured thickness, width, coil weight and manufacturing tolerances. This simple estimate excludes packing, straps, core effects and coating or oil weight.
Example: 2.0 mm × 1250 mm, 10 MT/coil → approximately 509.6 m of strip per coil.
SAE 1006 low-carbon strip is produced through controlled hot rolling and coiling. The order should connect chemistry, finished gauge, coil geometry and the material condition needed for your downstream production.
Your RFQ is reviewed across material specification, available manufacturing or supply routes, coil handling constraints, inspection requirements and export delivery planning.
Company-wide annual steel production of 8 million MT supports broader steel sourcing and order coordination.
Request a quotation for required tonnage, master-coil dimensions and any secondary slitting or decoiling needs.
Include the chemical certificate, lot identity and agreed mechanical checks in your supply specification.
Coordinate shipping route, coil weight limits, packing documents and Incoterms before confirmation.
Send your quantity by grade, thickness and width to compare practical shipment and processing options.
Coil processing is quoted against your required finished dimensions and the available material route. Provide a strip schedule or drawing where dimensional tolerances are tight.
For slit or cut-to-length material, specify net width after processing, coil edge quality, coil rewinding limits, thickness tolerance and surface finish.

The 1 million MT regular inventory figure refers to the entire steel business, rather than a reserved SAE 1006 lot.
Steel Inventory ↗Discuss coil orientation, mass, protective wrapping and unloading restrictions before booking freight. The final packaging arrangement depends on the transport mode and material finish.
Choose the grade whose chemistry, process condition and tested properties match the finished component. Compare structural and forming-oriented coils before changing a specified material.
Practical answers for buyers comparing SAE chemical grades, hot-rolled coil specifications, mechanical testing and shipment requirements.
It is low-carbon steel strip supplied in hot-rolled coil form. SAE 1006 identifies a chemistry grade under SAE J403; specify the hot-rolled product standard, dimensions, surface condition and mechanical acceptance separately in the order.
The sheet and strip reference maximum under SAE J403:2024 is 0.080% carbon. Common reference limits are Mn ≤0.45%, P ≤0.030% and S ≤0.035%. Confirm actual composition on the heat-analysis certificate.
ASTM A1011/A1011M-25 covers relevant hot-rolled sheet and strip product categories, while ASTM A568/A568M-25 provides applicable general sheet requirements. State the precise compatible ASTM designation or project product specification; SAE J403 alone describes chemistry.
SAE J403 itself is a chemical-composition standard, so a single universal guaranteed yield or tensile value is not attached to this grade. Supply your required strength, elongation, test direction and acceptance conditions with the RFQ.
Low carbon content is attractive for forming operations. Deep-drawing capability still depends on actual product grade, hot-rolling and further processing conditions, specimen properties and part geometry. Specify drawing quality and request agreed testing or trials for demanding parts.
Pickling, oiling, slitting and cut-to-length processing may be included in a quotation where the supply route supports them. Provide required surface condition, finished size and quantity for confirmation.
Nominal kg per meter equals thickness in mm × finished width in mm × 0.00785. Divide net coil mass in kilograms by this kg/m figure to estimate strip length. The value is a planning estimate based on nominal dimensions.
Both are low-carbon SAE grades, but published sheet/strip composition limits differ: SAE 1006 C ≤0.08% and Mn ≤0.45%; SAE 1008 C ≤0.10% and Mn ≤0.50%. Check the actual heat analysis and required product properties before substitution.
State SAE J403 edition, product standard, thickness, width, total MT, coil ID and net coil weight, mill or slit edge, surface condition, mechanical or forming requirements, MTC and destination. Attach coil-size lists or drawings for multiple specifications.
