SS400 is defined principally by its structural mechanical requirements. The basic JIS grade table specifies P and S limits; the carbon, silicon and manganese levels must be checked against the actual certified heat.
| Element | JIS SS400 reference / purchase interpretation |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | No universal fixed maximum prescribed by the basic SS400 grade table |
| Silicon (Si) | No universal fixed maximum prescribed by the basic SS400 grade table |
| Manganese (Mn) | No universal fixed maximum prescribed by the basic SS400 grade table |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.050% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.050% |
| Actual heat chemistry | Check the mill test certificate (MTC) for the supplied coil |
SS400 should not be sold using a fabricated carbon or manganese maximum. For welding, controlled bending, forming or specific downstream specifications, request heat analysis and any additional customer limits before confirming material.
The SS400 designation refers to a 400 MPa tensile-strength class. The minimum yield strength decreases with increasing material thickness, and elongation requirements depend on the test specimen.

Minimum yield point or proof stress for the relevant thinner-product group. Other thickness groups have separate requirements.
Reference minimum with the applicable JIS No. 1A test piece; a different gauge or specimen may have a different minimum.

Review the differences in material specification, strength and chemistry. Do not automatically substitute different JIS or GB grades in engineered components.
Surface finish and edge configuration affect coating preparation, downstream cutting, decoiling and handling. Select the appropriate coil condition for your process.
Hot rolling produces a naturally scaled finish. For cleaner surfaces and subsequent coating or fabrication, discuss pickled and oiled availability.
Supply the exact finished width and dimensional tolerances. Slitting feasibility and usable edge finish depend on coil gauge and mill width.
Provide your equipment limits and downstream cutting requirements early. Matching the coil to its production line reduces reprocessing and unnecessary handling.
Specify JIS G 3101:2024 and any required mechanical or chemistry limitations. Define the actual product standard.
State target nominal gauge, width, width tolerance, edge form and acceptable camber.
Provide preferred inner diameter and minimum / maximum single-coil net weight for your decoiler and crane.
Specify material traceability, test records, packaging, destination and agreed shipping terms.
Send your coil schedule with individual thicknesses, finished widths and quantity by size.
SS400 hot rolled coil is used where general structural strength and coil processing are appropriate. Final suitability depends on the fabrication standard, weld procedure and design loading.
Hot rolled coils can be decoiled into flat products for machinery, brackets and industrial metalwork.
Grade and coil specifications can be evaluated for roll-formed sections or welded-tube manufacturing.
Master SS400 coils can be processed into narrower slit coils, flat sheets and cut blanks with agreed dimensional tolerances.
Structural frames, machine bases and non-specialized components designed around the approved grade and gauge.
Hot rolled steel strip for roll-formed sections where bending and dimensional requirements are confirmed.
Selected coil feedstock for welded tube lines when the tube specification and welding controls are satisfied.
Steel for project-approved brackets, supports, channels and other general structural elements.
Consistent grade identification, coil dimensions and traceable lots for wholesalers and regional processors.
Estimate coil strip length and per-meter steel mass from finished thickness, width and net tonnage. This is a planning tool rather than a certified shipping or invoice weight.
Enter nominal thickness and finished strip width in mm, net mass per coil in metric tonnes, and the number of coils in your order.
Density used: 7.85 g/cm³. Formula: kg/m = thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00785. Estimated length (m) = net kg per coil ÷ kg/m. Gross shipping weight, wrapping and actual gauge variations are excluded.
Actual coil length depends on measured thickness, width and net coil mass. For slitting, the nominal parent width and usable slit widths must also be reconciled.
Reference only: 2.5 × 1250 mm and 10 MT is approximately 407.6 m of steel strip.
SS400 steel is rolled into hot steel strip, cooled and coiled. The delivery schedule must match material grade, coil dimensions and any further processing required for your order.
Production routing, processing options and the actual supplying facility are confirmed against the material lot in your order.

JIS G 3101:2024 defines SS400 as a general structural rolled steel grade. JIS G 3193:2025 addresses dimensions, shapes, masses and tolerances for applicable hot rolled steel plates, sheets and strips. State both the grade and applicable product/tolerance requirements in your RFQ.
The JIS G 3101 SS400 reference tensile-strength range is 400–510 MPa. Its minimum yield strength depends on material thickness: 245 MPa up to 16 mm, 235 MPa above 16 to 40 mm, and lower values in thicker groups.
The basic SS400 chemical-composition table lists phosphorus and sulfur maxima of 0.050% each, without one general numerical carbon, silicon or manganese maximum. Obtain the actual heat analysis on the MTC, and add any project chemistry limits when necessary.
These grades may serve similar structural fabrication applications, but their standards, chemistry and test requirements differ. They are not automatic or certified substitutes. Request engineering and buyer approval before changing a specified material.
Slitting can be assessed from master-coil width, nominal gauge, finished strip widths, edge tolerances and quantities. Include any customer-specified surface finish and re-coiling requirements.
A Charpy impact-energy guarantee should not be assumed for basic SS400. Where low-temperature toughness or a prescribed impact value is required, specify the correct material grade and testing terms for the project.
For nominal density 7.85 g/cm³, each running meter weighs thickness (mm) × width (mm) × 0.00785 kilograms. Divide coil net mass in kilograms by the running-meter mass to estimate length. Actual gauge and net coil weights affect the result.
