02 / MATERIAL PERFORMANCE

Grade B Mechanical Strength & Chemistry

These values describe ASTM A53 Grade B steel. Check actual heat analysis, pipe type and test results in the relevant MTC.

Mechanical Properties

PropertyGrade B requirement
Minimum tensile strength, Rm415 MPa / 60,000 psi
Minimum yield strength, Re240 MPa / 35,000 psi
ElongationCalculated from applicable test-specimen cross-section and ASTM equation; do not use one unqualified number
Weld-seam conditionGrade B Type E and Type F weld seam to receive specified heat treatment or approved equivalent processing
Type F forming limitationFurnace-butt welded pipe is not intended for flanging

The 2024 standard covers Grade B in Types E, S and F. Strength minima are not allowable design stresses.

Chemical Composition — Maxima

ElementHeat analysis reference
Carbon C≤ 0.30%
Manganese Mn≤ 1.20% (carbon–manganese trade-off permitted by ASTM footnote)
Phosphorus P≤ 0.050%
Sulfur S≤ 0.045%
Copper Cu / Nickel Ni / Chromium Creach ≤ 0.40%
Molybdenum Mo≤ 0.15%
Vanadium V≤ 0.08%

For Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo and V combined, ASTM places an additional total composition limit of 1.00%. Grade B Mn may be increased when carbon is reduced, subject to the standard footnote.

03 / MANUFACTURING ROUTES

Choose Type E, Type S or Type F

The ASTM A53 designation includes different manufacturing processes. Specify the type on your purchase order to avoid a mismatch.

TYPE E / ERW

Electric-Resistance-Welded

Welded pipe made by electric resistance welding. Choose Type E Grade B when the project permits this construction and the seam inspection / heat-treatment requirements are agreed.

TYPE S / SEAMLESS

Seamless Pipe

Manufactured without a longitudinal weld seam. Request Type S Grade B where the project calls for a seamless A53 pipe product.

TYPE F / FURNACE

Furnace-Butt-Welded

ASTM A53/A53M-24 includes Grade B for continuous furnace-butt welded Type F. This route is subject to its specified process provisions and is not intended for flanging.

Standard edition matters: A53/A53M-24 includes Grade B for Type F. Older published copies sometimes list Type F as Grade A only. Request the contract edition and the mill certificate for the exact route.

04 / OD & WALL THICKNESS

Pipe Size, Schedule and Dimensional Selection

Specify NPS plus schedule, or actual outside diameter and nominal wall thickness. Schedule is not an independent pressure rating.

Common nominal pipe dimensions, mm; reference layout from ASME B36.10M, not an inventory promise.

Nominal pipe sizeOD, mmSCH 40, mmSCH 80, mm
NPS 1/221.32.773.73
NPS 133.43.384.55

NPS 6168.37.1110.97
NPS 8219.18.1812.70

Final OD, wall tolerance, mass and finish should be confirmed against the purchase specification and approved drawings.

05 / FINISH & CONNECTIONS

Black vs Hot-Dip Galvanized A53 Grade B Pipe

The metal finish affects corrosion protection, coating inspection and quoted weights. It does not replace engineering approval of the pipe for its service.

BLACK PIPE

Black / Bare Steel Pipe

Supply in the agreed black or mill surface condition for projects with a specified finish or coating system.

GALVANIZED

Hot-Dip Galvanized Pipe

A53 can cover hot-dip zinc-coated pipe. Confirm galvanized finish, zinc-coating inspection and connection requirements in the PO.

END PREPARATION

Plain, Beveled or Specified Ends

Choose end details based on welding / joining method, site fabrication plan and the permitted pipe type.

Check your purchase drawing: coating, NPS, pipe ends, coupling/thread options and connection design must match the project specification. Type F is not intended for flanging.

08 / PIPE WEIGHT CALCULATOR

Estimate Pipe Weight, Pieces & Total Tonnage

Quickly estimate bare steel mass from OD, nominal wall, length and quantity. Galvanized zinc coating and packing are separate from this estimate.

A53 Grade B Steel Pipe Weight Calculator

The calculation uses 7.85 g/cm³ steel density and nominal OD / WT. It estimates bare, plain-end pipe mass; it excludes coating, end preparation, fittings, pallets and actual tolerances.

Estimated Quantity & Shipping Weight

Total bare steel weight—metric tonnes • theoretical
Weight per metre—
Weight per pipe—
Inside diameter—
Total linear metres—

Calculation: kg/m = π × (OD − WT) × WT × 0.00785, with OD and WT in millimetres. This is a planning estimate; final cargo weight follows the verified material and packing list.

17 / FREQUENT QUESTIONS

ASTM A53 Grade B Pipe FAQ

Quick answers to pipe route, galvanizing, dimensions, testing and bulk-order questions.

What is ASTM A53 Grade B steel pipe used for?

ASTM A53 Grade B covers black and galvanized carbon steel pipe for suitable pressure, mechanical and ordinary service. The system code and engineering specification determine final approval.

What are ASTM A53 Type E, Type S and Type F?

Type E is ERW, Type S is seamless, and Type F is continuous furnace-butt-welded pipe. State the exact type in the purchase order.

Does ASTM A53/A53M-24 allow Type F Grade B?

Yes. The 2024 edition expressly includes Grades A and B for Type F. Earlier editions may differ, so specify the edition and the actual pipe route.

Can Type F Grade B pipe be flanged?

The A53 scope says Type F is not intended for flanging. Review the required connection details and choose an approved pipe type for the application.

Is A53 Grade B the same as A106 Grade B?

No. A106 specifies seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service; A53 covers multiple pipe constructions and black / galvanized finishes. Substitution requires design approval.

Can A53 Grade B be hot-dip galvanized?

Yes. A53 covers both black and hot-dip galvanized pipe. Confirm the coating condition and inspections in the contracted material order.

What are the minimum strengths of A53 Grade B?

The specification lists 415 MPa minimum tensile and 240 MPa minimum yield strength. Elongation acceptance depends on the standard equation and test specimen.

How do I order Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 pipe?

Provide NPS and the schedule, or actual OD and nominal wall thickness. Confirm the grade, type, finish, length and total quantity as separate requirements.

Does Schedule 80 mean a specific operating pressure?

No. Schedule identifies a wall thickness for a given NPS. Pressure rating depends on dimensions, temperature, allowable stress, piping code, joint and corrosion allowance.

What testing documents can I request?

Specify MTC and heat traceability, hydrostatic and nondestructive testing records as applicable, plus any supplementary tests or third-party inspection.

Does the pipe weight calculator include galvanized coating?

No. It estimates bare-steel pipe mass using OD, wall, length, quantity and 7.85 g/cm³. Coating, caps and packaging add weight.

What details are needed for a factory price quote?

Send ASTM edition, Grade B, Type E/S/F, black or galvanized finish, NPS/OD, wall or schedule, length, pieces or tonnes, tests, location and target delivery date.
